Chapter 7 - The Lie Inside the Marriage

Laura did not tell Robert immediately.
She was ashamed.
Ashamed she might have been fooled.
Ashamed she had defended Mark.
Ashamed of every argument she had started with her father.
But shame gradually became anger.
Laura investigated her husband the way she would investigate a client.
First she copied financial records.
Then emails.
Then device histories.
She found Holloway Consulting.
It had no employees.
No office.
No legitimate revenue.
Its registered agent was a Delaware filing service.
But several payments flowed from Holloway to another company.
North Coast Asset Recovery.
Laura searched corporate records.
North Coast linked to three foreclosure purchases.
Each property had been obtained from elderly owners after disputed loan defaults.
One owner died two months before the foreclosure.
Another disappeared into assisted living.
Another had claimed his signature was forged.
Laura felt physically sick.
This was not a desperate husband stealing household money.
This was organized.
Methodical.
Old.
She found thirteen years of records.
Mark had started before they were married.
Perhaps before they met.
That thought was worse than everything else.
Had their entire relationship been part of the plan?
Had he chosen her because of Robert's property?
She opened an old email archive.
Mark had once emailed a friend during the month he met Laura.
Most messages were ordinary.
Then she found one recovered from deleted storage.
Subject:
Bennett
Body:
She's the only child.
Property is clean.
Dad owns it outright.
Could be worth waiting.
Laura stared until the words blurred.
The date was two days after their first coffee.
She closed the laptop.
Went to the bathroom.
Vomited.
Then she called Robert.
He answered on the second ring.
"Dad?"
Something in her voice changed his breathing.
"Where are you?"
"Home."
"Is Mark there?"
"No."
"Leave."
Laura began crying.
"Dad..."
"Don't tell me anything on the phone. Get your keys. Walk out the door. Now."
"Why?"
Robert's voice became firm.
"Because I already know."
Laura stopped.
"You know?"
May you like
"More than you do."
That was the moment her world completely broke.
