Chapter 13 - THE VIDEO CHARLES NEVER MEANT JULIAN TO SEE

Clara resurfaced at 2:16 that afternoon.

She walked into a police station eight miles away.

Alone.

Confused.

Alive.

Julian reached her twenty-three minutes later.

He hugged her before asking questions.

She clung to him.

For a long moment, nothing else mattered.

Then Bishop entered the interview room.

"What happened?"

Clara touched her temple.

"I woke up in a car."

Julian stared.

"You don't remember leaving the house?"

"No."

"Did someone drug you?"

"They're testing me."

"What happened in the car?"

"There was nobody there."

Bishop frowned.

"The car was moving?"

"No. Parked."

"Keys?"

"No."

"Phone?"

"No."

"Anything else?"

Clara reached into her coat.

"A flash drive."

Julian stared.

"Where did that come from?"

"It was in my pocket."

The drive contained one file.

A video.

Recorded eleven years earlier.

Charles Hayes appeared on-screen.

Younger.

Healthier.

Terrified.

Julian sat beside Clara as the video played.

Charles looked directly into the camera.

"If Julian is seeing this, then I failed."

Julian's throat tightened.

Charles continued.

"Haven is not an account. It is not a company. It is not a building."

He looked away from the camera.

"It is a protocol."

Clara leaned forward.

Charles continued.

"I discovered it inside Hayes International eighteen months ago. Someone created dormant corporate structures using our subsidiaries. They are designed to activate under specific financial conditions."

Julian's mind accelerated.

Dormant corporations.

Shell entities.

Contingency structures.

"For what?" Clara whispered.

Charles seemed to answer from the past.

"I don't know what happens when they activate."

The video glitched.

Then resumed.

"But I know three things."

Charles raised one finger.

"First, whoever built Haven had access to our internal systems before Julian became chief executive."

Second finger.

"Second, Daniel Voss believes Haven extends beyond our family."

Third finger.

"Third, Clara Mitchell may be the only person capable of locating the original authorization."

Clara gasped.

Julian looked at her.

The video continued.

"Clara, if you see this, I am sorry."

Her eyes filled.

"I never intended you to become part of this family."

Julian stared at the screen.

Charles continued.

"I introduced you to Julian because I needed you near him."

Julian's chest tightened.

"But I did not expect him to love you."

Clara covered her mouth.

"And I did not expect you to love him."

Charles lowered his eyes.

"For that, I owe you both an apology you may never hear."

The screen flickered again.

Then Charles leaned closer.

"The original authorization is hidden where the Hayes family keeps what it values most."

The video ended.

Julian stared at blackness.

Bishop asked, "What does that mean?"

Nobody answered.

Where the Hayes family keeps what it values most.

Julian thought of safes.

Banks.

Art.

Jewelry.

Documents.

Then Clara whispered, "The portraits."

He turned.

"What?"

"Your family portrait gallery."

Julian remembered the hidden surveillance room beside it.

Clara continued.

"Your mother once told me the portraits were the only things in the house she'd save from a fire."

They returned to the mansion.

The oldest portrait showed Julian's grandfather standing beside the first Hayes factory.

Marcus removed it from the wall.

Behind it was a steel compartment.

Inside lay a single envelope.

Julian opened it.

One sheet of paper.

One authorization.

One signature.

He read the name.

And stopped.

Clara looked over his shoulder.

Her face changed.

The person who had authorized Project Haven was not Charles Hayes.

Not Eleanor.

Not Lawrence.

Not Sienna.

Not Nathan.

It was Julian.

Signed eighteen years earlier.

When Julian had been twenty years old.

He stared at the signature.

"It looks exactly like mine."

Clara whispered, "Where were you eighteen years ago?"

Julian looked at her.

"College."

"Did you sign corporate documents?"

"Never."

Bishop examined the page.

"Could it be forged?"

Julian shook his head slowly.

"Maybe."

But there was something else.

A handwritten note beneath the signature.

In handwriting Julian recognized as his own.

ACTIVATE ONLY IF C.H. IS COMPROMISED.

Julian felt the room tilt.

May you like

Because he remembered writing those words.

He just didn't remember why.
