Chapter 15 - The Room Behind the Staircase

For three weeks, Nora told no one about the photograph.
Not Tessa.
Not Margaret.
Not even Laura.
She locked the blue file inside a new safe and continued rebuilding her life.
Every morning, she took her medication beside the kitchen window. She left the pill organizer open until each dose was complete.
At first, the ritual reminded her of Jason.
Eventually, it began to remind her that she had survived him.
The house no longer felt like a prison.
Friends filled the dining room on weekends. Tessa entered through the back door without knocking. Volunteers from the emergency network used the study for planning meetings.
Nora reopened every curtain.
Still, she avoided the wall beneath the staircase.
Investigators had searched the descending passage and found the silver briefcase, surveillance equipment, and false records.
They had not found the Continuity Record.
According to Evelyn’s letter, the passage was only the first location.
Celeste knew the first location.
Victoria knew the second.
Evelyn had kept the final key.
The brass key left in Nora’s hospital room did not fit any visible lock in the house.
Nora tried the study desk, the attic trunks, the basement cabinets, and the old doors in the passage.
Nothing opened.
Then Laura called.
“We found Celeste.”
Nora sat down.
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“At a private airfield near the Canadian border. She was traveling under another name.”
“Did she have the Continuity Record?”
“No.”
“Did she explain the photograph?”
“She refuses to answer questions about the children.”
“Does she know who Victoria is?”
“She says Victoria died twenty-one years ago.”
“My mother disappeared twenty-one years ago.”
“I know.”
“Does Celeste say my mother was Victoria?”
“No.”
“What does she say?”
Laura hesitated.
“She says Evelyn Mercer was not your mother’s real name.”
Nora gripped the phone.
“Then who was she?”
“Celeste will speak only to you.”
“Absolutely not.”
“I agree.”
“You called to warn me?”
“I called because we found something in her belongings.”
“What?”
“A recent photograph of this house.”
“Celeste has watched the house for years.”
“This one was taken yesterday.”
Nora turned toward the front window.
The street appeared empty.
“Celeste was already in custody yesterday.”
“Yes.”
“Then she didn’t take it.”
“No.”
“What was shown in the photograph?”
“The staircase.”
Nora looked toward it.
Laura continued.
“A section of the wall was marked with a circle.”
“The hidden passage?”
“No. A different section.”
Nora crossed the hall slowly.
Beyond the final stair, the wall appeared ordinary.
Then she noticed a tiny indentation near the baseboard.
It was shaped like the brass key.
“I think I found the lock,” Nora whispered.
“Do not open anything. I’m sending officers.”
Nora ended the call.
She retrieved the key from the safe and returned to the staircase.
She knew she should wait.
She also knew Celeste, Jason, and the unidentified photographer had all believed the house belonged to their secrets.
Nora inserted the key.
It turned smoothly.
A narrow section of the wall moved inward.
Behind it was not another passage.
It was a small room.
A desk stood beneath a single light. Shelves covered the walls. Hundreds of sealed files were arranged by date.
On the desk sat a video camera.
Its power light was on.
Beside it was a monitor showing a live image of Nora standing in the doorway.
Someone was watching from another location.
The monitor changed.
A prerecorded video began to play.
Evelyn Mercer appeared on the screen.
She looked directly into the camera.
“Nori,” she said. “If you found this room, then Jason failed, Celeste has been exposed, and Victoria knows you survived.”
Nora stepped closer.
Evelyn’s image flickered.
“You have been told that the Continuity Record identifies the rightful heir to Mercer Biomedical. That is only partly true.”
A sound came from the floor above.
One slow footstep.
Then another.
Nora turned toward the doorway.
She was supposed to be alone.
On the monitor, Evelyn continued speaking.
“The record does not prove who should inherit the company.”
The footsteps stopped at the top of the staircase.
“It proves which child was sent home with me.”
Nora’s phone rang.
The screen displayed Evelyn Mercer.
Her mother’s old number.
The number had been disconnected for twenty-one years.
Nora answered without speaking.
A woman breathed quietly on the other end.
Then a familiar voice said, “Do not believe the woman on the recording.”
Nora looked at Evelyn’s frozen image.
“Who is this?”
The woman ignored the question.
“Jason was never meant to inherit the house. He was meant to empty it.”
“For you?”
“For the person who has been living inside it.”
The line went dead.
Above Nora, the floorboard creaked again.
A shadow crossed the staircase.
Nora reached for the door to the hidden room.
Before she could close it, the camera on the desk rotated toward the shelves.
One sealed file had been removed.

In the empty space behind it, someone had written a message in fresh black ink.
WELCOME HOME, VICTORIA.
