Chapter 12 - Courtroom 6

The smoke was not fire smoke.
A federal medic identified it as an irritant designed to create panic and force evacuation. But the building's electronic locks had been overridden, trapping witnesses and agents inside separate zones.
Judge Malcolm Conrad controlled emergency access through a compromised judicial network.
Olivia secured Grace in an interior safe room with a nurse and two officers. Every instinct urged her to remain beside her daughter. Every fact told her that Conrad expected exactly that paralysis.
"You do not have to go," Harrison said.
"I am not giving him the index."
Evelyn removed the waterproof pouch. "This is a copy. The original is already transmitting."
Robert Mercer's Open House contingency had finally activated. Scanned files were being distributed to prosecutors in multiple jurisdictions and to selected investigative journalists. The Circle could no longer survive by destroying one room.
Olivia carried the decoy index to Courtroom 6.
The chamber was dark except for emergency lights. Judge Conrad stood behind the bench without his robe, a pistol resting on the wood. Jonathan Cole sat at counsel table, one hand pressed to a bleeding shoulder. Julian stood near the jury box in restraints, guarded by no one.
The brothers faced each other across the room.
"Put the pouch on the table," Conrad ordered.
Olivia did.
"Open the locks," she said.
"After verification."
Harrison entered behind her, hands raised. Evelyn and Lena remained outside with agents working to restore access.
Conrad opened the pouch and saw the copy. His composure fractured.
"Where is the master index?"
"Everywhere," Olivia said.
Jonathan laughed weakly. "I told you Mercer built redundancy."
Conrad struck him with the pistol.
The truth unfolded quickly because power becomes careless when it believes time is ending. Conrad had led the Circle's legal protection for decades. Beatrice recruited intimate access. Henry Reed engineered transfers. Celia controlled identity records. Jonathan was raised as the legal heir. Julian was intended to perform field operations and absorb blame.
Robert Mercer discovered the structure and began collecting evidence. Conrad ordered his death. Beatrice arranged the medication. Julian delivered it unknowingly in a bottle of wine.
Julian's face changed.
"You said it was a sedative," he told Beatrice's absent shadow.
Conrad smiled. "You were always easier to use than your brother."
Jonathan looked at Julian. For one moment, their resemblance became painful rather than sinister.
Conrad demanded the location of Grace. Olivia refused. He raised the pistol.
Julian moved first.
He struck Conrad's arm with his cuffed wrists. The shot shattered a wooden panel. Jonathan lunged from the table. Harrison pulled Olivia behind a stone column. The brothers fought Conrad together, not as redemption, but as instinct.
Courtroom doors unlocked with a metallic crash. Agents entered. Conrad fired again, hitting Jonathan in the side. Detective Shaw shot Conrad's weapon from his hand. He was arrested on the floor beneath the seal of the court he had corrupted.
Emergency crews cleared the building.
Jonathan survived surgery. Julian returned to detention. Conrad's arrest triggered raids across six states. Henry Reed, long presumed missing, was found living under an alias in Costa Rica and extradited.
The Circle's senior structure collapsed in public.
Beatrice agreed to cooperate after learning Conrad intended to blame her for every violent act. Celia negotiated testimony regarding medical fraud. Mark surrendered offshore passwords. Jonathan waived extradition challenges and offered legal archives.
Olivia visited Julian once before his plea hearing.
He sat behind glass in a gray detention uniform.
"I did not know the wine would kill your father," he said.
"You knew your family targeted him."
"Yes."
"You knew our meeting was arranged."
"Yes."
"You locked me in that room."
His eyes lowered. "Yes."
Olivia waited for the familiar explanations. None came.
"I loved you," he said finally.
"Love that requires my confinement is not love I can accept."
He nodded as though the sentence completed something he could not.
"Will Grace know who I am?"
"She will know the truth when the truth can serve her, not you."
Olivia ended the call.
Outside the detention center, Harrison handed her confirmation that the court had granted a final order of exclusive ownership and permanent protection. Julian and Beatrice were legally barred from Hawthorne Ridge.
Olivia held the new key in her palm.
The key was ordinary.
That was why it felt powerful.
Then Harrison received an encrypted message from Open House.
One Circle operation remained active.
May you like
Its target name was not Olivia.
It was Grace Mercer Carter.
