Chapter 1 - The First WarningSix months earlier, Jack Mercer had believed his marriage was the one part of his life no one could corrupt.

He had been wrong.
Jack and Hannah lived in a quiet townhouse overlooking the East River. Their home was smaller than the penthouses owned by the rest of the Mercer family, but Hannah had chosen it because she wanted a place that felt real.
She filled the rooms with books, mismatched coffee mugs, framed photographs and fresh flowers from the corner market.
Jack filled them with apologies for arriving home late.
As chief executive of Mercer Biotech, he was responsible for thousands of employees, several major research facilities and a company worth more than three billion dollars.
But none of that mattered when Hannah waited for him at the dinner table with cold food and disappointment in her eyes.
“You promised you’d be home by seven,” she said one evening.
Jack removed his coat.
“I know.”
“It’s almost midnight.”
“There was an emergency board meeting.”
“There is always an emergency.”
Her voice was not angry.
That made it worse.
Jack crossed the kitchen and reached for her hand, but Hannah pulled away.
“I don’t need expensive vacations or gifts,” she said. “I need a husband who is actually here.”
Jack wanted to tell her everything would change.
Before he could, someone knocked on the front door.
It was Daniel.
Jack’s younger brother entered with rain on his coat and fear written across his face. Daniel was usually composed, charming and impossible to unsettle. That night, his hands trembled as he removed a folded piece of paper from his pocket.
“This was delivered to my office.”
Jack opened the paper.
There were only nine words.
Resign from Mercer Biotech, or your wife pays first.
Hannah read the message over Jack’s shoulder.
Her face tightened, but she did not panic.
“We call the police,” she said.
Daniel immediately shook his head.
“We don’t know who sent it. Going public could provoke them.”
Jack looked at his brother.
“What do you suggest?”
“Private security. Quietly. Until we understand what this is.”
Daniel explained that the company had recently rejected a partnership with an international investment group. He believed someone was attempting to force Jack out before an upcoming shareholder vote.
The explanation sounded reasonable.
That was Daniel’s greatest talent.
He could make a lie sound like the only logical truth in the room.
Over the next two weeks, the threats continued.
A photograph of Hannah leaving her office appeared inside Jack’s car.
A dead phone was placed outside their townhouse with a recording of Hannah’s voice stored on it.
Then Jack’s brakes failed while he was driving alone.
The mechanic claimed a critical line had been deliberately damaged.
Jack stopped sleeping.
He hired security guards and changed every lock in the house. Hannah was escorted to work. Their windows were covered. Their phones were replaced.
But the threats still reached them.
Daniel remained beside Jack through all of it.
He attended every security meeting. He reviewed every report. He repeatedly warned Jack that the enemy was targeting Hannah because she was his wife.
Then, one night, Daniel delivered the message that changed everything.
He placed a photograph on Jack’s desk.
It showed Hannah standing outside her office.
A red circle had been drawn around her stomach.
At the time, neither Jack nor Hannah knew she was pregnant.
Beneath the photograph, someone had written:
The Mercer bloodline ends with her.
Jack stared at the picture until his vision blurred.
Daniel closed the office door.
“There may be only one way to remove her as leverage,” he said.
Jack looked up.
Daniel lowered his voice.
“You have to leave her.”
Jack refused immediately.
Daniel did not argue.
He simply placed another photograph beside the first.
It showed Hannah sleeping in their bedroom.
Someone had taken it through the window.
“They can reach her inside your own home,” Daniel said. “What do you think happens if they believe she no longer matters to you?”
Jack felt sick.
“You’re asking me to destroy her.”
“I’m asking you to keep her alive.”
That night, Jack returned home and found Hannah asleep on the sofa, still wearing the sweater she had worn to work.
A book rested on her chest.
Her wedding ring caught the light.
Jack stood in the doorway for a long time, memorizing her face.

By sunrise, he had made the worst decision of his life.
He chose to believe his brother.
