Chapter 15 - THE CALL FROM THE DEAD

They found Thomas unconscious near the rear exit.
Helen was gone.
Eleanor was gone.
The archive case was gone.
The mysterious paramedic had vanished.
Nathan survived the poisoning only because Claire recognized the cardiac pattern quickly enough.
By sunrise, Ava had slept less than thirty minutes in nearly two days.
Yet exhaustion felt distant.
Anger kept her upright.
Malcolm sat beside Nathan's bed.
Ava watched him from the doorway.
He noticed her.
"He's stable."
"I heard."
Malcolm looked at his brother.
"I spent my entire life believing he was dead."
Ava said nothing.
"I hated him when I learned he was alive."
"Why?"
"Because he got out."
Ava understood more than she wanted to.
"And now?"
Malcolm looked toward Nathan.
"Now I know he never got out."
Ava entered.
"We need to talk."
Malcolm nodded.
They walked outside into cold morning air.
Mountains rose beyond the facility.
For a moment the world looked peaceful.
Ava hated it.
"Did you marry me because Northstar ordered you to?"
Malcolm closed his eyes.
"At first, I met you because they told me to."
"That's not what I asked."
"No."
Ava waited.
"I married you because I loved you."
She almost laughed.
"Do you understand how useless that sentence is now?"
"Yes."
"You forged my consent."
"Yes."
"You let me believe my body failed me."
His eyes filled with shame.
"Yes."
"You cheated with Claire."
Malcolm looked away.
"Yes."
"Why?"
"No excuse."
"I didn't ask for one."
He swallowed.
"I was angry. Sick. Terrified. Eleanor had told me I would be replaced by Nathan if I failed. I discovered Claire had access to Ryan's old family records. I approached her for information."
"And slept with her."
"Yes."
Ava's jaw tightened.
"Did you manipulate her?"
"At first."
"At first."
"Then it became real enough to hurt everyone."
Ava looked toward the mountains.
"I don't know whether I hate you."
"You should."
"Don't tell me what I should feel."
He nodded.
"Fair."
"I won't forgive you because you were abused too."
"I know."
"I won't erase nine years because you claim some of them were real."
"I know."
"And if you die, that still doesn't make what you did noble."
Malcolm looked at her.
"I know."
For once, he did not defend himself.
Ava appreciated that more than she wanted to.
Ryan approached.
"Thomas is awake."
They went inside.
Thomas lay on a cot.
His head was bandaged.
"What happened?"
"The paramedic hit me."
"Did you see Eleanor leave?"
"No."
"Helen?"
Thomas's face hardened.
"She helped them."
Ava stared.
"Helen betrayed us?"
"I saw her unlock the rear gate."
Evelyn entered.
"That's not all."
She held a tablet.
"Northstar's board meeting started thirty minutes ago."
Ava looked at the screen.
A secure video conference.
Several faces were hidden.
Others were visible.
A senator.
A hospital chairman.
A biotech executive.
A federal judge.
A philanthropist whose foundation Ava had donated to.
The scale of Northstar finally became visible.
Ava whispered:
"How many?"
"Current voting members? Seventeen."
"Can we identify all of them?"
"Eventually."
Evelyn changed screens.
"There's more."
News websites appeared.
A headline:
FORMER CFO AVA HAYES SOUGHT FOR QUESTIONING IN MEDICAL FACILITY ATTACK.
Another:
HAYES FAMILY SCANDAL DEEPENS AFTER HOSPITAL INCIDENT.
Another:
POLICE SEARCH FOR MISSING PHILANTHROPIST ELEANOR HAYES.
Ryan laughed bitterly.
"They made us the criminals."
Thomas nodded.
"Standard containment."
Ava stared at her own photograph on television.
The public version of her life was already being rewritten.
"Then we release the files."
Evelyn shook her head.
"Not yet."
"Why?"
"Because Helen took the drive."
Silence.
"The copy from Samuel's archive?"
"Yes."
Ava closed her eyes.
"So we have nothing."
"No."
Evelyn looked at her.
"We have you."
"I am tired of being described as an asset."
"That's not what I mean."
Evelyn handed her a small object.
A wedding photograph.
Ava and Malcolm.
She frowned.
"What?"
"Look at the frame."
Ava turned it over.
The frame had come from Malcolm's study.
The photograph Thomas had stared at during their first meeting.
A tiny memory card was hidden inside.
Thomas sat upright.
"I put that there three years ago."
Ava stared.
"You copied Malcolm's files."
"Some."
Evelyn inserted the card.
Folders appeared.
Financial transfers.
Northstar names.
Medical records.
Communications.
Enough to establish a pattern.
Maybe enough to start destroying them.
Ryan smiled for the first time all night.
"Now we're talking."
Ava looked toward Malcolm.
"We release it through multiple outlets."
Thomas nodded.
"Journalists. Federal prosecutors. Foreign regulators."
Evelyn added:
"Once public, Northstar can't quietly erase everyone."
Ava sat before the computer.
For years she had built financial systems designed to survive attacks.
Now she constructed a release package designed to survive suppression.
At 9:17 a.m., Ava sent the first archive.
At 9:21, the second.
At 9:23, copies reached attorneys in three states.
At 9:31, a journalist called.
At 9:42, a federal prosecutor requested authentication.
At 10:06, the first major news outlet published.
NORTHSTAR BIOMEDICAL DOCUMENTS ALLEGE DECADES OF ILLEGAL REPRODUCTIVE PROGRAMS.
By noon, markets reacted.
A biotech company named in the files lost twelve percent.
A hospital chairman resigned.
A senator denied involvement.
A judge announced temporary leave.
By afternoon, federal agents raided two Northstar offices.
St. Catherine Medical Center suspended six staff members.
Dr. Marcus Vale was arrested while attempting to board a private aircraft.
Ava watched the coverage silently.
For the first time since entering Room 614, she felt something close to victory.
Not justice.
But movement.
Marianne sat beside her.
"You did it."
Ava shook her head.
"We opened the first door."
Ryan received another message from Claire.
She had gone with authorities voluntarily to provide testimony.
Ryan looked devastated.
But steady.
"I told her I'd listen when she's ready."
Ava squeezed his hand.
"Good."
Malcolm entered wearing a fresh bandage.
Federal agents had agreed to take his statement under medical supervision.
He stopped before Ava.
"They're offering cooperation terms."
"Take them."
"I probably go to prison."
"Probably."
He nodded.
"You won't ask me not to?"
"No."
A sad smile touched his face.
"Good."
Ava almost smiled too.
Then didn't.
Malcolm turned to leave.
"Ava."
"What?"
"For whatever part of our marriage was real..."
She looked at him.
He struggled for words.
Ava answered first.
"Maybe someday I'll know which part that was."
Malcolm nodded.
It was not forgiveness.
But it was truth.
For now, that was enough.
Three days later, Eleanor Hayes remained missing.
Helen Pierce remained missing.
The stolen biological archive remained missing.
Northstar denied every allegation while simultaneously dissolving subsidiaries across five countries.
Nathan recovered under federal protection.
Ryan submitted DNA for expanded family identification.
Marianne went home under security.
Thomas remained alive publicly for the first time in fourteen years, triggering legal chaos Ava found almost funny.
Evelyn planned to disappear again.
Ava stopped her at the door.
"No."
Evelyn turned.
"No more dead relatives."
A small smile appeared.
"I don't know how to be a sister."
"Neither do I."
"That seems inconvenient."
"We'll learn."
Evelyn nodded.
For the first time, Ava believed she might stay.
That evening Ava returned to the Denver mansion.
Not because she wanted the house.
Because she wanted to search every inch of it before federal investigators sealed it permanently.
The bedroom felt unfamiliar.
Malcolm's clothes.
Their wedding photographs.
The chair where Ava had cried after another failed fertility test.
She stood before it for a long time.
Then carried it outside and left it beside the curb.
Not dramatic.
Not symbolic.
She simply hated the chair.
Back inside, Ava entered Malcolm's study.
The hidden safe was empty now.
Investigators had taken everything.
Almost everything.
Ava noticed a scratch behind the safe's rear panel.
She removed two screws.
A false backing slid away.
Inside was a small red envelope.
No name.
Just a handwritten date.
June 14.
Ava's pulse quickened.
She opened it.
A photograph fell out.
Hospital recovery room.
Six years earlier.
Ava lay unconscious after the procedure.
Beside her stood Malcolm.
Younger.
Terrified.
And beside Malcolm stood another person.
A doctor.
Ava recognized Helen Pierce.
On the back was a note written in Malcolm's handwriting.
I'M SORRY.
I COULDN'T STOP THE FIRST PROCEDURE.
I ONLY STOPPED THE SECOND.
Ava went still.
Second procedure?
She searched the envelope.
Another medical page was folded inside.
The top line read:
PATIENT A.H.
PROCEDURE ONE: BILATERAL TUBAL OCCLUSION.
PROCEDURE TWO: EMBRYO TRANSFER.
Status:
CANCELLED.
Ava stared.
Embryo transfer.
They had intended to implant an embryo without her knowledge.
Her hands began shaking.
Then she read the next line.
EMBRYO DESIGNATION: M-17.
GENETIC SOURCE:
EVELYN MERCER.
PATERNAL SOURCE:
NATHAN HAYES.
Ava dropped the page.
Northstar had planned to make her carry Evelyn and Nathan's child.
Her sister's child.
Malcolm's brother's child.
Without Ava ever knowing.
She sat down slowly.
Then something else caught her eye.
A handwritten annotation at the bottom.
TRANSFER M-17 CANCELLED BY M. HAYES.
TRANSFER M-18 COMPLETED PREVIOUSLY.
Ava stopped breathing.
Previously.
She reread it.
Transfer M-18 completed previously.
That made no sense.
Ava had never been pregnant.
At least, she had never known she was pregnant.
Her phone rang.
Unknown number.
Ava answered.
No one spoke.
Then she heard a child breathing.
A little girl.
Ava stood.
"Hello?"
A woman's voice whispered:
"Is this Ava Hayes?"
"Yes."
"My name is Rachel Bennett."
Ava gripped the desk.
"I don't know you."
"No."
The woman began crying.
"But I think you need to know why I'm calling."
Ava looked at the medical record.
"What is this about?"
"I've been trying to find you for six years."
Ava's heart hammered.
"Why?"
There was a long silence.
Then Rachel whispered:
"Because the hospital told me the baby I adopted had no living biological mother."
Ava could not move.
The little girl's voice sounded in the background.
"Mommy?"
Rachel covered the phone briefly.
Then returned.
"She's six years old."
Ava stared at the words:
TRANSFER M-18 COMPLETED PREVIOUSLY.
Her voice barely worked.
"What is her name?"
Rachel answered.
"Lily."
Ava closed her eyes.
"What does she look like?"
Rachel sent a photograph.
Ava opened it.
The world stopped.
A six-year-old girl stood in a garden wearing a yellow dress.
Dark hair.
Gray-green eyes.
A small crooked smile.
Ava knew that smile.
She had seen it in childhood photographs of herself.
Her knees weakened.
Rachel spoke again.
"There's something else."
Ava whispered:
"What?"
"Two men came to my house tonight."
Ava stood.
"Who?"
"They said they were federal agents."
"Did you let them in?"
"No."
"Where are you now?"
"Driving."
"Where?"
"I don't know where it's safe."
Ava grabbed her coat.
"Listen to me. Do not go home. Do not contact police until I give you a name."
Rachel began crying harder.
"Who are these people?"
Ava looked again at Lily's photograph.
"I don't know all of them."
Then Ava heard a second voice through Rachel's phone.
A man's voice.
Calm.
Nearby.
"Rachel?"
Rachel screamed.
Tires squealed.
The call broke into static.
Ava shouted:
"Rachel!"
A crash sounded.
Then silence.
"Rachel!"
A different man picked up the phone.
Ava froze.
She knew the voice.
Adrian Cole.
Ryan's missing twin.
"Ava."
"Where is Lily?"
"Alive."
"Where?"
"Not for the phone."
"If you hurt her—"
"I'm trying to keep her alive."
"Then put Rachel back on."
A pause.
"I can't."
Ava's blood ran cold.
"What happened?"
"Northstar found them first."
Ava grabbed the medical report.
"Who is Lily?"
Adrian said nothing.
"Tell me."
"I can tell you what Malcolm didn't know."
Ava closed her eyes.
"What?"
"Procedure M-18 wasn't performed six years ago."
Ava stared at the paper.
"What are you talking about?"
"The date was falsified."
"Then when?"
Adrian breathed once.
"Seven years ago."
Ava's mind raced.
Seven years.
Before the surgery.
Before the fertility treatments.
Before she knew Northstar existed.
"I was never pregnant."
"Not long enough to remember."
Ava felt the room tilt.
"Was Lily carried by me?"
"No."
Relief and horror collided.
"Then why does she look like me?"
Adrian answered:
"Because M-18 wasn't Evelyn and Nathan's embryo."
Ava stopped breathing.
"It was yours."
The room went silent.
Ava whispered:
"And the father?"
Adrian did not answer.
"Adrian."
Nothing.
"Who is Lily's biological father?"
A sound came through the phone.
A door closing.
Adrian's voice became urgent.
"I can't explain now."
"Tell me his name."
"You need to find Evelyn."
"She's with federal protection."
"No, she isn't."
Ava's heart stopped.
"What?"
"The woman you think is Evelyn Mercer isn't Evelyn."
Ava stared into the darkness of Malcolm's study.
Adrian continued.
"Northstar replaced her eight months ago."
Ava whispered:
"Then who have I been talking to?"
"I don't know."
"And where is my sister?"
Adrian answered:
"That's why I'm calling."
A long pause.
"I found Evelyn tonight."
Ava gripped the desk.
"Where?"
Adrian's voice dropped to a whisper.
"Inside Northstar's original cryogenic facility."
"Alive?"
Another pause.
"Yes."
Ava closed her eyes.
Then Adrian said the words that erased every trace of relief.
"But she isn't alone."
Ava opened her eyes.
"Who is with her?"
Adrian breathed shakily.
"Twenty-three children."
Silence.
"All between four and nine years old."
Ava couldn't speak.
"And Ava..."
"What?"
"Every one of their files lists the same biological mother."
Ava stared at Lily's photograph.
Adrian whispered:
May you like
"You."
The call went dead.
