THE HIDDEN CAMERA / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9 - THE DOOR DIANE COULDN’T LOCK

The emergency hearing took place inside a private conference room at the Calder Group headquarters.

There was no jury.

No reporters.

No public gallery.

Only a retired judge appointed as trust mediator, three members of the Calder board, two attorneys, Diane, and Lily.

Ethan had not arrived.

Marcus was also absent.

Diane sat across the table wearing a cream suit and an expression of carefully controlled concern.

When Lily entered with Adrian’s nurse, Diane looked genuinely surprised.

Then she smiled.

“My dear,” she said softly. “We have been worried.”

Lily took her seat.

“I’m sure you have.”

The mediator reviewed the documents.

Diane’s attorney described Lily as emotionally distressed, isolated, and increasingly suspicious. He presented the fake emails. He submitted the nurse’s preliminary notes. He showed photographs of Lily entering the service corridor.

Then Diane spoke.

She did not call Lily unstable.

She called her vulnerable.

She said Lily’s pregnancy had placed her under extreme pressure. She said Ethan’s business travel had left Lily lonely. She said the Calder fortune had attracted people who filled Lily’s mind with conspiracies.

Every sentence sounded compassionate.

Every sentence removed a piece of Lily’s authority.

When Diane finished, the mediator turned to the nurse.

“You performed the evaluation?”

“Yes.”

“What was your conclusion?”

The nurse looked at Lily.

Then at Diane.

“My conclusion is that I was asked to create evidence supporting a conclusion that had already been chosen.”

The room became silent.

Diane’s attorney stood.

“That is not responsive.”

The nurse opened her black case.

“I recorded every instruction I received.”

She placed an audio device on the table.

A man’s voice played through the speaker.

Make her appear frightened.

The nurse’s voice followed.

What if she refuses the evaluation?

Then record the refusal as paranoia.

Diane’s voice spoke next.

Do not mention the trust. Ethan must believe this concerns the baby.

Diane stood.

“That recording is manipulated.”

The conference room door opened.

Marcus entered.

Ethan followed him.

Lily’s composure nearly broke when she saw her husband.

He crossed the room but stopped before touching her, as though he understood that she needed to choose whether he was welcome.

Lily reached for his hand.

Ethan held hers with both of his.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

The mediator called the room to order.

Marcus placed the sealed blue envelope on the table.

“This is Charles Calder’s final trust amendment.”

Diane’s attorney objected.

Marcus continued.

“The amendment names Ethan Calder’s legal spouse as temporary controller of the residential trust and its attached voting shares. It also states that any attempt to declare that spouse incapacitated must be supported by two independent court-appointed doctors.”

He looked at Diane.

“No such doctors were appointed.”

Diane remained standing.

“The amendment was revoked.”

Marcus produced the memory card.

“The revocation was obtained through fraud.”

A video began playing on the conference-room screen.

It showed Diane in Lily’s bedroom practicing her signature.

The next clip showed Diane replacing Lily’s phone battery.

Another showed the forged documents being placed across the bed.

Then the recording from Charles’s library played.

Charles accused Diane of changing records and helping Adrian Vale access the trust.

The board members stared at her.

Diane’s face lost its carefully arranged calm.

“This proves nothing about today.”

Marcus changed the video.

The nurse appeared inside the mansion’s library, speaking with Diane.

Diane asked who had hired her.

The nurse named Mr. Vale.

The screen froze on Diane’s terrified expression.

The mediator leaned forward.

“Mrs. Calder, do you know Adrian Vale?”

Diane looked at Ethan.

“He destroyed your father.”

“Answer the question,” Ethan said.

Diane’s eyes filled.

It was the first genuine emotion Lily had seen from her.

“Yes.”

“Did you work with him?” the mediator asked.

“Years ago.”

“Did you create the custody order?”

“I created a temporary protective document.”

“You forged Lily’s signature.”

“I was trying to keep the company from being taken.”

“By whom?”

Diane looked toward the room’s security camera.

Her fear returned.

“Turn that off.”

The mediator frowned.

“Why?”

“Because this hearing is not private.”

A red light blinked above the door.

Marcus checked his laptop.

“The camera is transmitting externally.”

Diane backed away from the table.

“He is watching.”

“Adrian?” Ethan asked.

“No.”

The conference-room door locked with a sharp electronic click.

Ethan tried the handle.

It would not move.

The lights dimmed.

A voice came through the ceiling speakers.

“Thank you, Diane.”

The voice was female.

Lily thought of the woman from the hotel security feed.

The woman who looked like Ethan.

Diane stared upward.

“You promised me time.”

“You had twenty-one years.”

The main screen changed.

A live video showed the lobby downstairs.

Police officers were entering the building.

Beside them stood Adrian Vale and Rosa Alvarez.

The female voice continued.

“The forged custody order, the altered trust records, and Charles’s recordings have been delivered to the authorities.”

Diane looked almost relieved.

Then the voice added:

“But those were never the documents I wanted.”

The screen displayed an image of the silver case carried by the woman in the hotel.

Inside was an old birth certificate.

A second infant.

A second Calder heir.

The mediator rose.

“Who is speaking?”

The camera above the door rotated slowly toward Ethan.

“My name,” the woman said, “is Evelyn Vale.”

Adrian appeared on the lobby screen, looking directly at the camera.

His expression was not triumph.

It was fear.

Evelyn continued.

“Although the name on my original birth record is Evelyn Calder.”

The conference-room door unlocked.

Police footsteps approached outside.

Diane sank into her chair.

Ethan remained beside Lily.

“Is she my sister?” he asked.

Diane covered her face.

“No.”

The door opened.

Two officers entered.

Diane was informed that she was being detained while the forged documents and unlawful surveillance claims were investigated.

She did not resist.

She did not argue.

As the officers escorted her away, she stopped beside Ethan.

“I did terrible things,” she whispered. “But I did not switch those babies.”

Ethan stared at her.

“What babies?”

Diane looked toward Lily’s stomach.

“Ask Marcus why your father hid the nursery records.”

Then she allowed the officers to take her.

For the first time in weeks, Lily stood inside a room Diane could no longer lock.

May you like

Yet as the elevator doors closed behind her, Lily realized Diane had left them with a more dangerous prison.

A question none of them knew how to escape.
