Chapter 10 - ADRIAN

The stolen child was Lenora's son.
Adrian.
If he had survived, he would be forty-nine years old. Old enough to be the hidden architect Elias feared. Old enough to believe the Vale empire was his by birth.
Lenora rejected the possibility. “My son was a sick newborn.”
“So was Gabriel,” Ava said gently. “And documents made him into someone else.”
Mara searched employment, adoption, and medical databases for men born on the correct date. The clinic's records listed three infant deaths and two transfers. One transfer went to a couple named Rourke.
Thomas Rourke had a younger brother.
Alexander Rourke, founder of a private hospital group and longtime donor to the Vale foundation.
Photographs revealed Lenora's eyes in his face.
Alexander had attended Vale events for decades, always at the edge of family pictures, always close enough to watch the life that might have been his.
Gabriel remembered him as “Uncle Alex,” though no one explained the title.
The state issued a warrant.
Alexander's homes were empty.
A video arrived instead.
Helen sat in a room without windows. She appeared unharmed but exhausted. Beside her stood Alexander Rourke in a dark suit.
“My name was taken before I could speak it,” he said. “My mother was told I died. My inheritance was given to a replacement. And now a child born from stolen blood is being used to continue the theft.”
Lenora moved closer to the screen.
Alexander continued. He demanded that the covenant be voided, Vale Holdings transferred to a trust under his authority, and all criminal charges against Blythe suspended.
“Blythe is your enemy,” Gabriel said to the recording.
Elias shook his head. “She may also be his partner.”
The video ended with Helen speaking directly to Ava.
“Do not trade Noah's future for me,” she said. “Finish what we should have finished years ago.”
The message included a deadline: midnight the next day.
Ava's body was still healing, but she left the hospital against advice for a secure apartment near the neonatal unit. She would not conduct a family war from a bed Blythe could access.
Her first act as protector was to call every Vale employee.
She spoke live, without public-relations scripts. She announced an independent audit of the company, protection for whistleblowers, suspension of the private clinics, and a fund for patients whose records may have been manipulated.
Dozens of messages arrived within an hour.
One came from a retired midwife named June Bell.
June claimed she had been present the night Lenora's baby was taken. She had kept a copy of the original footprint card and a letter written by the doctor who ordered the switch.
More importantly, she knew where Alexander hid people.
A mountain recovery center owned through a church charity.
Police prepared a raid.
Blythe learned of it through the leak and sent a warning to Alexander.
This time, Mara anticipated her. She had fed different false locations to each suspected source.
The false mountain address had been given only to the independent trustee.
He was arrested leaving his office with a burner phone.
The real location was an abandoned maternity hospital outside the city.
Gabriel and Elias wanted to join the raid. Ava forbade it.
“You are witnesses and targets,” she said. “Let trained officers bring my mother home.”
At 11:42 p.m., agents entered the hospital.
They found Dr. Hale's blood, Helen's scarf, and rows of empty infant beds.
On a wall, someone had written fifteen names.
June Bell's testimony revealed how the original infant switch occurred. She had been a twenty-year-old nurse ordered to carry Lenora's sick baby to another wing. When she returned, a different child occupied the bassinet. Her supervisor threatened to report her for theft if she spoke.
June spent decades believing silence kept her own children safe.
At the command center, she faced Lenora.
“I watched you leave with the wrong baby,” she said.
Lenora's face tightened, but she did not attack the messenger. “And I built a world where your fear made sense.”
June handed her the footprint card.
The tiny ink marks were almost faded.
Lenora pressed them to her lips and wept for the infant Adrian had been, not for the empire Alexander demanded.
Ava saw the distinction. One could mourn the harmed child without excusing the harmful man.
That idea guided her response to Alexander. She would acknowledge what had been stolen from him. She would not surrender other people to his revenge.

The final name was NOAH VALE.
Beneath it was tomorrow's date.
