Chapter 2 - The Girl Beneath the Refrigerator)

Emily had seen frightened children before.
During nursing school clinical training, she had spent twelve weeks in a pediatric unit.
She had seen children afraid of needles.
Children afraid of doctors.
Children afraid because their parents were not there.
Sophie's fear was different.
She was afraid someone would come.
Emily reached inside.
"You're okay. Come here."
Sophie shook her head immediately.
"If she sees me out, she'll be mad."
"Who?"
Sophie pressed herself farther into the compartment.
Emily kept her voice low.
"Who put you in here?"
The girl did not answer.
Emily looked at the fabric around Sophie's wrists.
It was not tightly knotted.
There were no marks on her skin.
That almost made it worse.
The restraint was not meant to injure her.
It was meant to frighten her.
Emily gently loosened it.
"You don't have to stay in here."
Sophie watched her hands.
"She said Daddy would believe her."
Emily paused.
"Believe what?"
"That I'm bad."
"No."
"You don't know me."
"I know you're seven."
Sophie's lower lip trembled.
Emily offered her hand.
"That's enough for me."
For several seconds, the child did not move.
Then she slowly placed her fingers into Emily's palm.
Emily helped her crawl from the compartment.
Sophie's bare feet touched the polished floor.
Her knees buckled.
Emily caught her.
The girl was freezing.
Emily removed her black catering jacket and wrapped it around her shoulders.
"Where are your shoes?"
Sophie shook her head.
"Do you know where your dad is?"
Another nod.
"Upstairs."
"Then we're going to find him."
"No."
Sophie grabbed Emily's vest.
"Please don't."
"Why?"
"She'll tell him."
"Tell him what?"
Sophie looked toward the staircase.
Then she whispered, "That I broke Mommy's box."
Emily frowned.
"What box?"
Sophie's eyes moved toward the kitchen door.
A shadow crossed the frosted glass.
Emily stood.
The door opened.
Vanessa Grant entered.
She carried a champagne glass.
Her expression was perfectly calm.
Emily immediately understood.
Not because of anything Vanessa said.
Because Sophie stopped breathing.
Vanessa looked at the open compartment.
Then at Sophie.
Then at Emily.
"Close it."
Emily thought she had misheard.
"What?"
"Close the compartment."
Emily stood between Vanessa and Sophie.
"There's a child in here."
"I'm aware."
"She was locked inside."
"She was having a tantrum."
Emily stared at her.
"You put a seven year old in a storage cabinet because she had a tantrum?"
Vanessa took a slow sip of champagne.
"You work for the caterer?"
"Yes."
"Then cater."
Emily felt Sophie's fingers tighten around her shirt.
Vanessa noticed.
Something passed through her eyes.
Not embarrassment.
Possession.
"Sophie," Vanessa said, "come here."
The child did not move.
Vanessa lowered her voice.
"Now."
Emily turned slightly toward Sophie.
"You don't have to."
Vanessa laughed once.
It was not a happy sound.
"You have no idea what you're interfering with."
"I know a child was locked in a compartment."
"She locked herself in."
Sophie whispered, "No."
Vanessa's eyes snapped toward her.
Emily heard it.
So did Vanessa.
"You shoved her in there?" Emily asked.
"Careful."
"Why?"
"You are standing on my yacht."
"And she's standing barefoot in your kitchen terrified of you."
Vanessa set her champagne glass on the counter.
For the first time, her smile disappeared.
"You think bravery and stupidity are the same thing."
Emily did not move.
Vanessa stepped closer.
"Sophie has behavioral issues. She lies. She steals. She stages scenes because she wants her father to hate me."
Sophie began crying again.
Emily looked over her shoulder.
"Don't listen to that."
Vanessa's face hardened.
"Do not speak to her."
Emily turned back.
"Then get her father."
Vanessa picked up the tray Emily had left near the door.
For one strange second, Emily thought she was going to hand it back.
Instead Vanessa kicked it.
The tray flew across the hallway.
Dirty dishes crashed against the wall.
Plates shattered.
Silverware scattered.
Sophie screamed.
Vanessa pointed toward the stairs.
"You are hired help. Shut your mouth and get out."
Footsteps thundered above.
Someone had heard the crash.
Emily's pulse raced.
Good, she thought.
Let them come.
Danil appeared at the top of the stairs.
He descended quickly.
His face was angry before he reached the hallway.
"What happened?"
Vanessa turned toward him so fast that Emily almost admired the performance.
"Thank God."
Danil looked at Sophie.
"What is she doing down here?"
Vanessa answered immediately.
"I found this woman dragging her out of a restricted compartment."
Emily stared.
"What?"
Vanessa pointed at her.
"She cornered Sophie."
"That's a lie."
Danil moved toward his daughter.
"Sophie?"
The child pressed against Emily's back.
Danil stopped.
That should have told him something.
Instead confusion became anger.
"Who are you?" he demanded.
"Emily Carter. Catering staff."
"Why are you touching my daughter?"
"Because I found her locked inside that compartment."
Vanessa laughed in disbelief.
"Danil, listen to her."
Emily pointed toward the open cabinet.
"Ask Sophie."
"I did," Vanessa said. "She won't answer because she's terrified of this woman."
"Stop lying."
Danil stepped between them.
"Enough."
Emily's voice rose.
"No. Not enough. Your daughter was crying in a dark compartment with fabric around her wrists."
Danil looked toward Sophie's hands.
Vanessa moved immediately.
"She does that when she's upset. She ties things around herself."
Sophie shook her head.
Vanessa spoke louder.
"See? This is exactly what her therapist warned us about."
Danil's eyes closed briefly.
Emily saw exhaustion.
And fear.
Someone had been preparing him to doubt his own daughter.
"You need to listen to her," Emily said.
Danil looked at Emily.
Vanessa whispered something behind him.
Emily did not hear the words.
She only saw Danil's expression change.
He stepped forward.
"What did you say to Sophie?"
"Nothing."
"You opened a secured area."
"To get her out."
"You had no right."
"I had every right to help a child."
"Get off the yacht."
"After somebody calls the police."
Danil's face hardened.
"You don't give orders here."
Emily looked at Sophie.
Then back at him.
"You don't even care what's true?"
The slap came so quickly Emily did not see his hand move.
Pain exploded across the left side of her face.
Sophie screamed.
Danil froze.
Emily stumbled into the wall.
For one second there was complete silence.
Then Emily slowly straightened.
Her cheek burned.
Her eyes watered.
She did not cry.
She stared directly at Danil.
"You just proved my point."
Something like shame crossed his face.
Vanessa seized the moment.
"Security."
Emily raised one finger.
"Wait."
She pointed toward the camera mounted high in the corner.
"If you think I'm lying, check it."
Vanessa stopped.
Emily saw it.
A flicker of panic.
Small.
Instant.
But real.
Vanessa's hand clenched.
Danil followed Emily's finger.
The camera lens pointed directly toward the hallway.
He looked at his wife.
May you like
Vanessa took one step backward.
And Emily knew the night had just changed.
