THE HAMMER ABOVE VICTORIA / Chapter 5 / 15

Chapter 5 - The Voice Under the Floor

The discovery changed everything.

Victoria was no longer merely an overbearing relative.

She became the primary person of interest in Claire's disappearance.

Police searched her hotel room.

They found nothing.

Victoria hired an attorney and refused further questions.

Mark remained inside the hidden archive.

He studied every box.

The files went back twenty years.

Robert's medical history.

Robert's business contracts.

Mark's school reports.

Claire's financial accounts.

Even Lily's pediatric records.

Victoria had collected everything.

But why?

One folder was labeled only with a date.

October 17.

Eighteen years earlier.

Inside were photographs of the mansion during renovations.

Mark recognized the west hallway.

Workers had opened the original basement.

One photograph showed Victoria standing beside Robert.

Another showed a construction crew installing the concealed steel entrance.

On the back, Robert had written three words.

Victoria insisted again.

Mark's throat tightened.

His father had known.

Maybe not everything.

But enough.

Mark searched deeper.

A sealed envelope fell from the folder.

Inside was a letter.

Mark,

If you are reading this, then either I failed to tell you the truth or I ran out of time.

Victoria believes this house is hers because she believes control is the same thing as love.

It isn't.

I allowed too much because I was tired, ashamed, and afraid of destroying the family.

That cowardice may eventually cost you.

The basement was not my idea.

I agreed to hide it after Victoria convinced me that sensitive financial documents needed secure storage.

Later I discovered she was keeping records on people.

Including me.

I tried to stop her.

I don't know if I succeeded.

If she ever turns that same obsession toward you, do not negotiate.

Get her out.

Robert.

Mark closed his eyes.

His father's warning had arrived ten years too late.

Or perhaps Mark had ignored it for ten years without knowing it existed.

An officer interrupted.

"We found something else."

Beneath the desk was a trapdoor.

It opened into a lower service tunnel.

The tunnel was narrow and damp.

Mark wanted to enter.

Police made him wait.

They searched first.

The passage ran thirty yards under the mansion and ended beneath the old greenhouse.

No Claire.

But they found footprints.

Two sets.

One belonged to a woman's high heel.

Victoria.

The other was barefoot.

Claire.

Mark stared at the prints.

His wife had walked through the tunnel without shoes.

Against her will?

Running?

Hiding?

At the greenhouse end, the tunnel opened into an equipment room.

The exterior door led to the gardens.

Security cameras there had been disabled during Claire's disappearance.

Police dogs followed Claire's scent from the greenhouse toward the eastern woods.

Then lost it beside the private road.

Someone had used a vehicle.

Mark felt sick.

Victoria could have taken Claire anywhere.

That night he returned to Lily's bedroom.

He did not know how to tell his daughter.

He did not need to.

Lily asked first.

"Did you find Mommy?"

Mark sat beside her.

"Not yet."

"Grandma knows."

"I think so."

Lily looked toward the hallway.

"Mommy was crying."

"When?"

"Before Grandma took her downstairs."

Mark leaned forward.

"You heard her?"

Lily nodded.

"What did Mommy say?"

"She said she found Grandpa's recording."

Mark froze.

"What recording?"

"I don't know."

"Did she tell Grandma where it was?"

Lily shook her head.

"Grandma kept asking."

Mark suddenly remembered Claire's final voicemail.

Something is wrong with that room.

She had not gone downstairs randomly.

She had found something.

Something involving Robert.

Mark returned to the archive.

He searched for hours.

At two thirteen in the morning, exhausted, he dropped into the old chair.

It scraped across the floor.

Then he heard it.

A faint electronic sound.

He moved the chair.

A small recorder was taped beneath it.

He pressed play.

Static.

Then Robert Carter's voice filled the room.

"Victoria, if anything happens to me, Mark gets everything."

Victoria answered.

"You think this is about money?"

"What else could it be?"

"It's about being erased."

"You aren't being erased."

"You replaced me with your son."

"He is my son."

"And this house should have been mine."

Robert sighed.

Then Victoria said something that made Mark's blood go cold.

"People disappear inside families all the time, Robert. They don't need to die. They simply need to stop being believed."

The recording ended.

Mark stared at the device.

Claire had found this.

May you like

Victoria knew she had found it.

And Claire had disappeared hours later.
