Chapter 3 - The Box Beneath the City

The key belonged to a safe-deposit box at the Pacific Continental Bank.
Carter, Marcus, and the twins entered before sunrise through an underground parking garage. The bank manager owed Carter a favor and opened the private vault without asking questions.
Box 417 contained no money.
Inside were three items.
A flash drive.
A leather notebook.
And a video camera.
Marcus connected the flash drive to his laptop.
Nathan Vale appeared on the screen.
He looked exhausted, but alive.
“If Carter is watching this,” Nathan said, “then my father finally made his move.”
Carter leaned closer.
Nathan explained that Victor had spent decades placing loyal people inside rival organizations. He created wars, then sold peace to whichever side survived. Judges, police officers, politicians, and business leaders were trapped through bribes and secret recordings.
Carter’s empire had never been Victor’s enemy.
It had been Victor’s final target.
Nathan had discovered the plan and tried to warn Carter. Before he could, Victor poisoned him using a toxin designed to resemble heart failure.
Nathan suspected the attack and secretly took a partial antidote. He survived, but Victor imprisoned him in a private medical facility.
Their mother, Rachel, had discovered the truth. Victor captured her when she tried to escape with the twins.
Nathan’s voice broke.
“My daughters are alive because Victor believes he can shape them into loyal heirs. Rachel and I are alive because he still wants information from us.”
Lily gripped Emma’s hand.
“Our parents are alive,” she whispered.
The video ended with an address hidden inside a sequence of shipping numbers.
Marcus searched the location.
“It’s an abandoned rehabilitation hospital outside Santa Clarita.”
Carter opened Nathan’s leather notebook.
It contained names, dates, account numbers, and enough evidence to destroy Victor’s entire network.
There was also a final message.
Carter, if you find my daughters before you find me, protect them from the man I failed to stop.
Carter closed the notebook.
“We go now.”
Marcus shook his head.
“Victor expects that. The hospital could be a trap.”
“It is a trap.”
“And you still want to walk into it?”
Carter looked at Emma and Lily.
“No. I want Victor to believe I will.”
They built the plan in twelve minutes.
Marcus sent a message through one of Victor’s compromised channels, claiming Carter had discovered the hospital address and was approaching with a small team.
Meanwhile, the real Carter transferred the notebook and video to federal investigators through an attorney who had secretly helped him move his businesses toward legitimacy.
He sent copies to three newspapers and two judges.
Victor could silence one person.
He could not silence everyone.
Then Carter called the one remaining number in Nathan’s notebook.
A woman answered.
Carter spoke a code Nathan had used years earlier.
There was a long pause.
Finally, she said, “Victor moved the prisoners yesterday.”
“Where?”
“To the old Vale shipping terminal.”
Carter turned toward Marcus.
Victor had not chosen the terminal only because it was secure.
May you like
He had chosen it because it was where Nathan, Carter, and Derek had once planned to build their first legitimate company.
Victor wanted the final victory to happen on top of their broken dream.
