Chapter 11 - The Fire Beneath Briar House

Margaret gave them ten minutes.

Evelyn opened an underground escape route leading toward the island’s northern cliffs.

Richard refused to move until she revealed where the surviving subjects were held.

“I told you, Margaret moved them.”

“You also knew she was coming.”

“I expected her eventually.”

“She arrived with an armed team less than an hour after us.”

Evelyn looked toward Daniel.

“He has a tracker.”

Daniel went still.

“Where?”

“Inside the original implant.”

“Take it out,” he demanded.

“There is no time.”

Lucy gripped his hand.

Daniel looked down at her fingers as though he remembered the shape but not the meaning.

Ethan studied the building plans.

“What happens if we activate every Nightingale device at once?”

Evelyn stared at him.

“Why?”

“The terminal screens changed when Lucy and I came close. The locked wing opened when we touched the scanner. The devices connect to the system.”

Daniel understood.

“We can make the trackers transmit false locations.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“You would need the central relay.”

Lucy pointed downward.

“The room beneath the yellow stairs.”

Evelyn’s face changed.

“How do you know about that?”

“Daniel showed me before the fire.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

A fragment returned.

“There was a red door.”

They descended through a concealed staircase while Richard’s security team prepared to delay Margaret’s men.

The relay chamber contained an array of old servers connected to newer satellite equipment. Nightingale had never truly closed. It had evolved.

Ethan and Daniel sat before separate terminals.

Lucy stood between them.

Evelyn explained that the system could broadcast the identity signal of every registered subject, but activating it might expose their exact locations to anyone connected to the network.

“It could also reveal the relocated children,” Richard said.

“Yes.”

“Do it.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“You are deciding for children who may have built new lives.”

Richard stopped.

She was right.

Revealing their identities could destroy families and place them in danger.

Lucy studied the list on the monitor.

“Can we send them a choice?”

Evelyn hesitated.

“The implants receive only simple coded instructions.”

“Then send one question,” Lucy said. “Ask whether they want to be found.”

Ethan began typing.

Daniel helped without being asked.

The message went out through the dormant network.

NIGHTINGALE SUBJECTS: REQUEST SAFE CONTACT?

For several seconds, no response appeared.

Then one light turned green.

Another followed.

Across the screen, signals appeared from New York, London, Toronto, Madrid, Singapore, and cities Richard had never visited.

Thirty-two subjects requested contact.

Nine refused.

Six signals remained inactive.

One flashed red from somewhere beneath Briar House.

Lucy pointed.

“Someone else is here.”

The identifier appeared.

SUBJECT ZERO.

Evelyn backed away from the screen.

“That is impossible.”

“Who is Subject Zero?” Richard asked.

“The original neural donor.”

“Name.”

Evelyn stared at the signal.

“Victoria.”

An explosion struck the upper floor.

Dust fell from the ceiling.

Margaret’s team had entered the building.

Richard ordered Ethan and Lucy toward the escape tunnel.

Daniel remained at the console.

“The red signal is moving.”

A map appeared.

Subject Zero was beneath them, approaching the relay chamber.

A reinforced door opened on the opposite wall.

A woman entered through smoke and emergency light.

Her face bore burns along the jaw. Her hair was streaked with gray. She walked with a slight limp.

Richard recognized her before his mind accepted what he saw.

“Victoria.”

Ethan stopped breathing.

“Mom?”

The woman looked at him.

Her eyes filled with tears.

Then she turned toward Lucy.

“My baby.”

Lucy moved behind Richard.

Victoria’s expression broke.

Richard did not approach her.

“Are you real?”

“As real as whatever Margaret left of me.”

The ceiling shook again.

Victoria closed the door behind her.

“If you want the children to survive, you need to burn the ledger.”

Richard held it against his chest.

“It is evidence.”

“It is also a map to every child.”

“We can protect them.”

“No institution can protect them from the names written in that book.”

Lucy looked at Victoria.

“You made me a Nightingale.”

Victoria did not defend herself.

“Yes.”

“You let them hurt Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“You let them put him inside Ethan.”

Victoria’s tears fell.

“Yes.”

Lucy’s voice remained steady.

“Then you don’t get to call me your baby.”

Victoria lowered her head.

“I know.”

Margaret’s voice sounded from the stairwell.

“Touching reunion.”

She entered with Owen Pike and four armed men.

Owen’s injured ankle was supported by a brace, but the silver ring remained on his hand.

May you like

Margaret aimed a pistol at Victoria.

“You should have stayed buried.”
