Chapter 15 - The Fourth Child

Grant smashed the hand mirror against the floor.

The red light went dark.

Security officers searched every room before sunrise.

They found seven new devices hidden throughout the family wing.

None had been present during the previous inspection.

Someone had entered the mansion after the security system was replaced.

Or someone had never left.

Celeste insisted the family leave immediately.

Grant moved them to a secure penthouse owned through an anonymous trust. Only Mason, Detective Ortiz, Emma, and two federal agents knew the location.

Elias stayed behind to help search the estate.

At noon, he disappeared.

His truck remained near the west greenhouse.

His phone lay on the driver’s seat.

There were no signs of a struggle.

Only a silver snake ring placed carefully on the dashboard.

Detective Ortiz organized a citywide search.

Grant wanted to join it, but Celeste stopped him.

“This is what Orpheus does,” she said. “It separates us by creating emergencies.”

“Elias may be in danger.”

“I know.”

“Then we cannot sit here.”

“We also cannot leave Lily unprotected.”

Emma watched them argue and realized the system had already produced the choice Renata had described.

Who deserved to be saved first?

The missing man or the frightened child?

The same kind of test Evelyn had performed decades earlier.

“We do neither,” Emma said.

Grant and Celeste turned toward her.

“We don’t accept the choices it creates. Mason coordinates the search for Elias. Grant stays with Lily. Celeste and I examine the clinic records.”

“What clinic records?” Grant asked.

Celeste looked at Emma.

“The ones I hid before I confronted Renata.”

She opened the hollow handle of her cane.

Inside was a narrow glass capsule.

A microfilm strip rested within it.

They used an offline reader in the penthouse study.

The first files contained photographs of children.

Most names had been removed.

Each child had been assigned a role.

Observer.

Manipulator.

Protector.

Witness.

Celeste was Observer 3.

Renata was Manipulator 2.

Emma was Protector 4.

A fourth child appeared repeatedly in the records.

Subject O.

The file described him as the only child capable of shifting between all assigned roles.

He could observe without emotional attachment.

Manipulate without guilt.

Protect selectively.

Witness trauma without losing function.

Evelyn’s notes called him the successful model.

The final page showed a photograph of a dark-haired boy, perhaps ten years old.

He wore a silver ring shaped like a snake.

The name beneath the photograph had been scratched away.

Grant leaned toward the screen.

“I know him.”

Celeste’s face tightened.

“Who?”

“My father’s former security adviser.”

“He would be nearly fifty now,” Emma said.

Grant nodded.

“He disappeared after my father died.”

Detective Ortiz called.

Her voice was urgent.

“We found Elias.”

“Is he alive?” Emma asked.

“Yes, but he’s unconscious. He was left outside the old Aster Foundation building.”

“Why there?”

“There’s something else. He had a photograph taped to his chest.”

Ortiz sent the image.

Emma opened it.

The photograph showed the Callahan family entering the secure penthouse that morning.

Grant.

Celeste.

Lily.

Emma.

The picture had been taken from inside the building.

Someone knew exactly where they were.

On the back, a message had been written in black ink.

THE FOURTH CHILD HAS COME HOME.

Grant ordered everyone away from the windows.

Mason checked the hallway.

The federal agents secured the elevators.

Celeste took Lily into the reinforced bedroom.

Emma remained in the study, staring at the photograph.

Something about the reflection in the penthouse window bothered her.

She enlarged the image.

A figure stood behind the photographer.

Tall.

Dark-haired.

Wearing a black tailored suit.

At first, Emma thought it was Grant’s reflection.

Then she noticed Grant was visible elsewhere in the frame, holding Lily’s hand.

The man behind the photographer had Grant’s face.

Not similar.

Identical.

Emma’s breath stopped.

A soft chime sounded from the computer.

A new folder appeared on the offline screen.

It should have been impossible.

The folder was titled GRANT CALLAHAN: ORIGINAL FILE.

Emma called Grant into the room.

He stared at the title.

Celeste appeared behind him, carrying Lily.

“Do not open it,” she whispered.

Grant looked at his wife.

“Why?”

Celeste’s eyes filled with fear.

“Because Evelyn did not create four children.”

She looked at Grant as if seeing him for the first time.

“She created five.”

The lights went out.

From somewhere inside the penthouse, a man began humming Lily’s lullaby.

Lily tightened her arms around Celeste.

Grant stepped in front of them.

Mason raised his weapon.

Emma looked toward the dark hallway.

A figure stood at the far end.

The emergency lights flickered once.

For a single second, the stranger’s face became visible.

It was Grant’s face.

The figure smiled.

Then Lily whispered the words that made Celeste collapse against the wall.

“That’s the man who carried Mommy away.”

The emergency lights died again.

And in the darkness, two identical voices spoke at the same time.

One beside Emma.

May you like

One at the end of the hallway.

“Lily, come to Daddy.”
