Chapter 10 - The Founder Who Refused to Die

Amelia Calder appeared older than the portraits in the hospital archives, but her posture remained elegant and severe. Her white hair was pinned neatly behind her head. A black cane rested against the desk.
Thomas Hart stood beside her with his hands visible.
He did not seem physically restrained. He simply looked like a man who understood that every exit had already been considered.
“Release him,” Lena said.
Amelia smiled at the screen.
“You have his courage. Fortunately, none of his caution.”
Helen stepped closer.
“Mother, this is over. The underground patients are speaking to police. The financial records are public.”
“Those records belong to Adrian Voss and a handful of administrators. A regrettable group of criminals.”
Voss finally lost his confidence.
“You authorized every transfer.”
“I authorized research funding. Whatever you did with that support was your responsibility.”
“You cannot erase me.”
Amelia’s smile disappeared.
“I already prepared your death certificate.”
The officers holding Voss exchanged glances.
Mara understood the structure of the trap. Amelia had allowed the hidden facility to be discovered because Voss could absorb the blame. The hospital would survive under new ownership. The public would believe the conspiracy had been exposed.
Founder Two would remain untouched.
“Why did you want me to find Lena?” Mara asked.
Amelia studied her.
“Samuel admired you.”
“You never met me.”
“I watched you for nine years.”
Mara thought of every night she had pushed a cart through silent corridors, believing herself invisible.
“You placed me in the laundry.”
“Daniel did. I merely ensured the position remained available.”
Daniel moved beside Mara.
“You knew about the key?”
“Of course. Samuel created it.”
Helen looked at her mother.
“You knew Daniel was alive.”
“I required him alive.”
“You let his family grieve.”
“Grief made Mara observant. Hope would have made her reckless.”
Mara’s anger became strangely calm.
“What do you want?”
Amelia touched a file on her desk.
“The Calder Trust contains more than this hospital. Twelve clinics, three research foundations, medical supply companies, private recovery centers, and land holdings across four states.”
Gabriel stared at the screen.
“Samuel placed everything in the trust?”
“He tried to take everything from me.”
“And now it belongs to Lena,” Mara said.
“Only if she accepts it.”
Lena lifted her chin.
“I don’t want anything from you.”
“You will.”
Amelia opened the file.
“Thomas Hart is charged with the murder of Samuel Calder.”
Lena turned toward Thomas.
“That’s not true.”
Thomas finally spoke.
“I was there when Samuel disappeared.”
Helen looked at him.
“You told me you never met my father.”
“I was trying to protect Lena.”
Amelia continued.
“Samuel discovered that Thomas had copied confidential patient identities. They argued in the original maternity building. Samuel was never seen again.”
“Because you killed him,” Gabriel said.
Amelia looked almost amused.
“My son has spent his life blaming me for every failure he could not understand.”
Thomas met Lena’s eyes through the camera.
“Do not sign anything.”
Amelia placed a document before him.
“If Lena rejects the inheritance, the entire Calder Trust returns to the surviving founder.”
“You,” Mara said.
“Yes.”
The plan became clear.
Amelia had allowed Lena to survive. She had arranged for Mara to discover her. She had exposed Voss and the underground patients so the trust would activate publicly.
Now Lena would be forced to reject the inheritance to save Thomas.
Mira moved toward the camera.
“You cannot hold him there forever.”
“I need only hold him until sunrise. The trust acceptance period expires at six.”
Gabriel checked the time.
It was 3:42 a.m.
Daniel spoke quietly to Mara.
“The original maternity building is beneath the north parking structure. Thomas left coordinates in the message.”
“Can we reach it?”
“The main entrance will be guarded.”
Mara looked at her ring of keys.
“What about the laundry tunnels?”
Daniel smiled faintly.
“That is why Samuel chose you.”
Helen stood between Lena and the screen.
“Mother, let Thomas leave. I will testify.”
“Your testimony is already prepared. You will admit that Voss manipulated you.”
“I will tell them about you.”
“And they will see a grieving executive accusing her legally deceased mother.”
Helen had no answer.
Mara looked at the detectives.
“Arrest Voss. Secure the hospital. Keep the press inside the lobby.”
One detective said, “Mrs. Vale, you do not have the authority to give us orders.”
Lena stepped forward.
“She does on my behalf.”
Everyone turned toward her.
“I accept the Calder Trust temporarily,” Lena said. “I appoint Mara Vale as emergency administrator of all hospital property until an independent court can review the transfer.”
Gabriel opened his laptop.
“The trust permits it.”
Mara looked at Lena.
“You understand what you’re doing?”
“No,” Lena admitted. “But I know who found me when everyone else wanted me to disappear.”
The hospital system chimed.
Across every monitor appeared a new message.
TRUST ACCEPTANCE RECORDED.
EMERGENCY ADMINISTRATOR: MARA VALE.
Amelia’s expression changed for the first time.
Not fear.
Respect.
“Very good,” she said. “Now come and earn it.”
The feed ended.
Daniel turned to Mara.
“The tunnel entrance is in the laundry.”
They returned to the basement accompanied by Mira, Elias, Lena, Gabriel, and two city detectives. Helen remained behind to give a formal statement.
The hidden patients were safely outside. The underground wards were being documented. Voss was in custody.
When Mara entered the laundry, the machines had started again.
The normal sound felt unreal.
She walked toward the place where she had found Lena.
Behind the linen carts, beneath the abandoned shoes, was a circular drain.
Her laundry key fit into its central lock.
The drain lifted like a hatch.
A spiral staircase descended beneath it.
From somewhere below came the same slow piano melody Lena had heard during her father’s secret meetings.
Daniel looked into the darkness.
“She knows we’re coming.”
Mara started down.
Halfway to the bottom, her phone received a message from an unknown number.
MARA, DO NOT TRUST THE MAN YOU BROUGHT BACK FROM ROOM 814.
Attached was a photograph taken only seconds earlier.

It showed Daniel standing behind her on the staircase.
In his hand was Dr. Voss’s access card.
