Chapter 3 - The Night Everything Changed

Ethan demanded the passwords to my investigation files.
I refused.
He threatened to destroy my reputation. He said he would tell the world I was mentally unstable, that I had stolen from the company, and that my brother had helped me falsify medical records.
His phone continued recording from the counter.
He had forgotten it was there.
“You think anyone will believe you?” he asked. “They love me.”
“They love the person you pretend to be.”
His face twisted.
“You would have nothing without me.”
I almost laughed.
Apex had been weeks from bankruptcy when I rescued it. His house had been purchased with money from my family trust. Even the charity foundation he used to build his public image had been organized by my accountants.
But I no longer needed to argue.
I only needed the truth recorded in his own voice.
“You moved investor funds,” I said.
“I moved money that belonged to me.”
“It belonged to the company.”
“I am the company.”
“And Victor helped you?”
Ethan realized too late that I was guiding the conversation.
He reached for the phone.
I moved toward the door.
He blocked my path.
What followed happened quickly. There were threats, a struggle, and then the kitchen floor beneath me. The room blurred as I heard Ethan searching my pockets for my phone.
He found it and held it in front of my face.
“Unlock it.”
I turned away.
He tried again.
When I still refused, his voice became strangely calm.
“You never learn when to keep quiet.”
The words were the last thing I clearly remembered.
But before darkness took over, I heard a soft electronic sound from the counter.
His phone was still recording.
Ethan must have panicked after I became unresponsive. He could control me behind closed doors, but he could not control what happened if I never woke up.
He called emergency services.
By the time paramedics arrived, he had created his story.
I had slipped in the shower.
He had found me unconscious.
He was the terrified husband who had tried to save me.
He even changed my clothes and wet the bathroom floor.
It might have worked if I had been taken to another hospital.
But the ambulance brought me to Riverside.
Liam’s hospital.
After Liam ordered the unit secured, Ethan tried to leave.
A police officer blocked the door.
“I haven’t been charged with anything,” Ethan said.
“You’re being asked to remain while we investigate,” the officer replied.
Ethan pointed toward me.
“She needs psychiatric help. Ask her brother. She has been paranoid for months.”
Liam’s jaw tightened, but he did not respond.
Maya arrived twenty minutes later with two representatives from the family trust.
She walked into the emergency department wearing a gray suit and carrying a leather folder.
Ethan recognized her.
“What are you doing here?”
“Representing Claire.”
“She can’t make legal decisions in her condition.”
“She made them six months ago.”
Maya opened the folder.
“At 9:42 tonight, the trust received Claire’s emergency notification.”
Ethan looked at me.
I had no memory of sending it.
Then I remembered the shortcut on my watch. Three presses activated the North Star protocol. I must have triggered it during the struggle.
Maya continued.
“Your authority as chief executive of Apex Development has been suspended. All company accounts are frozen pending investigation.”
“You can’t do that.”
“We already did.”
Ethan laughed once, but there was no confidence in it.
“I own Apex.”
“No,” Maya said. “You managed Apex. Claire’s family trust controls it.”
Victor Shaw was arrested at the airport three hours later carrying two passports, financial records, and access codes to an offshore account.
Ethan’s phone was collected as evidence.
The recording was still there.

So were messages between Ethan and Victor discussing the shell companies, the stolen investments, and a plan to blame me when the money disappeared.
By sunrise, the man everyone admired had lost his company, his reputation, and his freedom.
