Chapter 11 - The Man Above Her Father

Richard collapsed against the control platform.

Emily drew her pistol.

The two guards aimed at her and Daniel.

Marcus Vane raised one hand.

“No one fires.”

The guards lowered their weapons.

Vane stepped through the glass door.

He looked older than the photographs in Daniel’s military files, but his posture remained straight and controlled.

Former deputy commander of Atlas.

Former general.

Presumed dead.

The Architect.

Richard pressed one hand against his wound.

“You promised succession.”

Vane looked down at him.

“I promised that your work would continue.”

“You need me.”

“I needed your daughter.”

Emily kept her weapon trained on Vane.

“Release every prisoner in this facility.”

Vane smiled.

“You have your husband.”

“There are others.”

“Always the officer.”

Daniel stood beside her despite his weakness.

“Atlas transfer is incomplete.”

“It is complete enough,” Vane said.

“The family signatures are unstable.”

“Then Liam will stabilize them.”

“He is not here.”

Vane’s smile widened.

“Are you certain?”

Emily’s blood went cold.

She touched her radio.

Only static answered.

“Reed.”

No response.

Vane walked toward the central screen.

“Colonel Carter, you have spent your life believing strength meant resisting control. In reality, strength is recognizing which system will exist with or without your consent.”

“You built Orion.”

“I corrected the limits of human training.”

“You experimented on children.”

“I preserved survival knowledge.”

“You stole Madison from a hospital.”

Vane paused.

“Madison was dying when we took her.”

“She had parents.”

“Parents who signed the research consent in exchange for debt relief.”

Emily thought of Madison waiting with Reed’s rear team.

“Who were they?”

“Unimportant.”

“They were her family.”

“Biology does not create family. Purpose does.”

Daniel whispered, “He is stalling.”

Emily saw it.

The server transfer continued.

Seventy-two percent.

Richard’s wound bled heavily.

He dragged himself toward a lower console.

Vane did not notice.

Emily fired at the glass server wall.

The reinforced panel cracked but did not break.

The guards returned fire.

Daniel pulled Emily behind the metal chair.

Bullets struck the platform.

Richard reached the console and entered a code.

Emergency doors sealed between the guards and the central chamber.

Vane turned.

“You disappoint me, Nathaniel.”

Richard looked at Emily.

“East tunnel.”

She stared at him.

“Go.”

“You caused this.”

“Yes.”

“You took Daniel.”

“No.”

“You experimented on Liam.”

“Yes.”

There was no apology in Richard’s face.

Only urgency.

“Why help us now?” Emily asked.

Richard looked toward Vane.

“Because he intends to erase every subject after the transfer.”

Vane pressed a control, but Richard’s lockout held.

Daniel helped Emily move toward the east corridor.

Richard called after her.

“The first red door was never beneath the house.”

Emily stopped.

“What does that mean?”

“You remembered the room because Patricia carried the memory before you were born.”

Emily’s mind reeled.

Inherited memory.

Her childhood recollection might have belonged to her mother.

Richard coughed blood.

“Find Subject Zero. That is where it began.”

Vane struck the glass with his fist.

“Do not listen to him.”

Richard laughed weakly.

“For once, Emily, choose the lie that keeps you alive.”

The east tunnel opened.

Emily and Daniel entered.

Behind them, Vane broke through the damaged glass.

A single gunshot followed.

Emily did not look back.

The tunnel sloped upward beneath the runway.

Explosions sounded overhead.

Vale’s team had entered the maintenance network.

Daniel stumbled.

Emily caught him.

“How long have you been held here?”

“Four days.”

“Where before that?”

“The vessel.”

“Which one?”

“Northwind Dawn.”

She remembered the three cargo ships on Vale’s map.

“Where is it now?”

“Vane moved it after I escaped the first time.”

“You escaped?”

“Eighteen months ago.”

“You came to Briar Glen.”

“Yes.”

“You could have approached me.”

“I saw Richard’s surveillance team near Liam’s school.”

“So you watched us and left.”

“I planted the tracker in Liam’s airplane so Ava could find him if I was captured.”

“You put surveillance on our child.”

“To protect him.”

Emily pushed him against the tunnel wall.

“Stop using that sentence.”

Daniel stared at her.

She had imagined their reunion thousands of times.

In every version, she ran into his arms.

There had been no anger, no betrayal, no six years of decisions made in her name.

Reality was harder.

“You do not get to return as a hero,” she said. “You do not get to disappear, track our son, and call it protection.”

Daniel lowered his head.

“I know.”

“Do you?”

“I was afraid.”

The admission stopped her.

Daniel had never said those words during their marriage.

“I was afraid that if I touched Liam, Vane would know I had chosen him over the mission. I was afraid I would lead Orion to you. I was afraid you would look at me and see what they turned me into.”

Emily’s anger shifted.

“What did they do?”

Daniel showed her the inside of his arm.

A line of small scars followed a nerve path.

“They forced repeated access to the compound. They used memories of you and Liam to trigger responses.”

“Did it work?”

“I know things I never learned.”

“Like what?”

“I remember the layout of your father’s childhood home in Prague. I remember Patricia’s first trial. I remember a woman singing to Madison before she was taken.”

Emily stared at him.

“Whose memories?”

“I do not know.”

Footsteps sounded behind them.

They continued toward the surface.

At the tunnel exit, Vale waited with Ava and two soldiers.

Ava saw Daniel.

Emotion crossed her face, but she kept her distance.

Daniel embraced her carefully.

“You came back.”

“You took too long,” she said.

Vale looked toward Emily.

“Reed’s forces are engaged at the north hangar. Vane brought private troops through underground access.”

“Where is Liam?”

“With Reed’s rear team.”

A radio transmission broke through.

Mara’s voice.

“Colonel, the rear position has been attacked. We have multiple casualties.”

Emily seized the radio.

“Where is Liam?”

Static.

“Mara.”

A gunshot sounded over the channel.

Then Madison’s voice came through.

“Emily, they took him.”

The world narrowed again.

“Who?”

“I don’t know. They wore Reed’s uniforms.”

“Where are you?”

“Near the south road. I tried to stop them.”

“Are you hurt?”

“I’m fine.”

Her voice shook.

“Liam left something.”

“What?”

“He scratched a message into the vehicle door.”

Emily closed her eyes.

“Read it.”

Madison inhaled.

“It says, ‘Daddy’s ship.’”

Daniel went pale.

May you like

Vane had not taken Liam to Black Ridge.

Someone had taken him to the Northwind Dawn.
