Chapter Five: The Doctor Who Knew Her Name

Khloe was moved to an examination room under Dr. Reed’s direct supervision.

Marcus stayed beside her the entire time.

He held her hand while monitors were attached. He watched the screen like a man waiting for judgment. When the baby’s heartbeat filled the room, strong and steady, Khloe broke down.

Marcus pressed his forehead to her hand.

“I’m sorry,” he whispered.

Khloe closed her eyes.

She wanted to say it was not his fault.

But marriage was not built on comforting lies.

So she said nothing.

The silence hurt him. She saw that. But he did not ask her to soften it.

He deserved to sit inside it.

Dr. Reed watched quietly from the foot of the bed.

“The baby appears stable,” he said at last. “We’ll keep you overnight for observation, but there are no immediate signs of serious distress.”

Khloe covered her mouth.

Marcus exhaled like he had been holding his breath for years.

“Thank you,” he said.

Dr. Reed nodded.

Then he looked at Khloe again.

Not as a doctor looked at a patient.

As someone looked at a memory.

Khloe noticed.

“Do I know you?” she asked.

The question seemed to pain him.

“In a way,” he said.

Marcus straightened.

Dr. Reed glanced toward the door, where Grant stood guard.

“There are things we need to discuss. But first, your husband’s mother is waiting outside with two attorneys and a very polished lie.”

Khloe’s body went tense.

Marcus’s face hardened.

“Let her wait.”

Dr. Reed studied him.

“She won’t wait. Women like Vivian Cole believe doors are for other people.”

As if summoned, Vivian’s voice cut through the hallway.

“I am his mother. You will not keep me from my family.”

The door opened before anyone invited her in.

Vivian entered with perfect posture and cold eyes. Behind her stood a family attorney, Mr. Ellison, holding a leather folder.

She looked first at Marcus.

Then at Khloe.

Not with concern.

With irritation.

“My God,” Vivian said. “What a spectacle.”

Marcus stepped between his mother and the bed.

“Leave.”

Vivian’s eyebrows lifted. “Excuse me?”

“You heard me.”

“I came because Isabella called in hysterics. She said Khloe attacked her.”

“Isabella is in police custody.”

For the first time, Vivian’s expression cracked.

Only slightly.

But Khloe saw it.

“She is what?”

Marcus stared at his mother.

“The hospital cameras recorded her pushing Khloe and admitting a plan to make Khloe look unstable.”

Vivian’s mouth tightened.

“What nonsense.”

Dr. Reed lifted the tablet.

“Would you like to watch it?”

Vivian looked at him with annoyance. “And you are?”

“Dr. Nathaniel Reed. Chief medical director of St. Aurelia.”

Her face changed again.

Not fear.

Recognition.

Khloe saw that too.

“You,” Vivian said.

Dr. Reed’s voice remained calm. “Yes. Me.”

Marcus looked between them.

“You know each other?”

Vivian recovered quickly. “Everyone knows Dr. Reed. He has delivered half the city’s wealthy heirs.”

“Not half,” Dr. Reed said. “Only the ones whose families could afford to pretend childbirth was a social event.”

Vivian’s eyes narrowed.

Marcus’s patience snapped.

“What did you promise Isabella?”

Vivian looked offended. “I refuse to be interrogated in a hospital room.”

“Then I’ll ask once before my attorney asks officially.”

Vivian glanced at Khloe.

“Your wife has always been fragile. I tried to protect the family.”

Khloe felt Marcus’s hand tighten around hers.

“Protect the family from what?” he asked.

“Scandal. Instability. A woman overwhelmed by pregnancy, charity obligations, and a life she was never prepared to handle.”

Khloe whispered, “You were going to take my baby.”

Vivian’s face showed no guilt.

“If necessary, we were going to ensure the child remained in a stable environment.”

Marcus looked sick.

“We?”

Mr. Ellison cleared his throat. “Mrs. Cole, perhaps this is not—”

“Answer me,” Marcus said.

Vivian lifted her chin.

“There were preliminary discussions. Nothing more.”

Dr. Reed tapped the tablet again.

A second recording played.

This one was from the hallway outside the VIP wing.

Isabella’s voice, low but clear, spoke into her phone.

“Vivian, I’m going in now. Once Marcus sees me crying, you need to bring the paperwork. He’ll sign anything if he thinks Khloe endangered the baby.”

Vivian’s voice answered through the speaker.

“Do not overdo it. She only needs to appear unstable, not dead.”

Khloe went cold.

Marcus did not move.

The room seemed to lose air.

Vivian’s attorney closed his eyes.

“Mother,” Marcus said.

The word sounded broken.

Vivian looked at the tablet, then at Dr. Reed.

“That recording was obtained illegally.”

Dr. Reed’s calm finally sharpened.

“It was recorded in a hospital corridor after repeated threats against a patient. St. Aurelia has posted surveillance notices at every entrance. Your attorney can explain the rest.”

Mr. Ellison said nothing.

Vivian turned to Marcus.

“Everything I did was for you.”

“No,” Marcus said. “Everything you did was for control.”

Vivian’s eyes flashed.

“You think love is letting that girl drag you into weakness? Look at you. On your knees because she cried.”

Marcus stepped closer.

“That girl is my wife.”

“She is the mother of my grandson.”

“She is not an incubator for the Cole family.”

Khloe’s breath caught.

It was the first time he had said the words she had needed for months.

Vivian looked truly angry now.

“You will regret humiliating me.”

Marcus’s voice went cold.

“No. I regret not stopping you sooner.”

He turned to Grant.

“Remove her from this room. She is not allowed near Khloe. Not tonight. Not ever without Khloe’s consent.”

Grant stepped forward.

Vivian looked around, stunned that anyone would dare.

“You can’t remove me from my son’s life.”

Marcus looked at her for a long moment.

“You already did.”

Vivian left with her attorney, but her perfume remained behind like a threat.

Only after the door closed did Khloe realize she was shaking.

Marcus sat beside her.

“I should have seen it.”

“Yes,” Khloe said.

The honesty hurt them both.

Marcus nodded slowly. “I know.”

Dr. Reed gave them a moment. Then he set the tablet down.

“Mrs. Cole,” he said gently, “there is something else.”

Khloe looked at him.

The warmth in his voice frightened her more than Vivian’s cruelty.

“Your mother’s name was Elena Whitman,” he said.

Khloe stopped breathing.

Marcus looked at her.

Khloe had rarely spoken of her mother. Elena died when Khloe was five. All Khloe had were a few photographs, a silver locket, and memories blurred by childhood.

“How do you know that?” she asked.

Dr. Reed’s eyes softened.

“I was her doctor.”

Khloe stared.

“She came to me before you were born. She was young, alone, and terrified. But she loved you before she ever held you.”

Khloe’s throat tightened.

Dr. Reed continued carefully.

“Elena worked as a nurse in this hospital. She was brilliant. Kind. Stubborn when it mattered. She had planned to return to medical school.”

Khloe had never known that.

“My mother was a nurse?”

“Yes.”

Tears slipped down Khloe’s face.

Dr. Reed reached into the pocket of his white coat and removed a small envelope, worn at the edges.

“I kept this longer than I should have. I thought giving it to you would reopen wounds. Then years passed, and cowardice started pretending to be mercy.”

He handed it to her.

Khloe’s name was written on the front.

Not Mrs. Cole.

Khloe.

The handwriting was faded but delicate.

Her hands shook as she opened it.

Inside was a letter.

Marcus remained silent beside her.

Khloe read the first line and began to cry.

My darling Khloe, if life is kind, I will tell you these things myself.

The room blurred.

Dr. Reed looked away, giving her privacy.

In the letter, Elena wrote about fear, hope, and the daughter she prayed would never believe love had to be earned through silence. She wrote that powerful people would always try to define a gentle woman as weak. She told Khloe to remember that kindness was not surrender.

At the end, she wrote:

If you ever feel alone, find Dr. Nathaniel Reed at St. Aurelia. He promised me he would help you.

Khloe lowered the letter.

Dr. Reed’s eyes were wet.

“I failed her,” he said. “And I failed you.”

Khloe shook her head slowly.

May you like

“You saved me tonight.”

“No,” he said. “Tonight I finally kept my promise.”
