Chapter 3 - The First Lie
Anna’s doubts had begun six months earlier with a hotel receipt.
Mark had returned from what he claimed was a business conference in Chicago. While sending his jacket to the cleaners, Anna found a receipt from a luxury resort in Vermont.
The suite had been booked for two guests.
When she confronted him, Mark did not hesitate.
“The Chicago flight was canceled. Jessica and I met a potential investor in Vermont instead.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I knew you’d react like this.”
He turned her suspicion into an accusation.
He told her grief had made her anxious. He said managing the company had become too stressful for her. He suggested she take several months away from the office.
Anna apologized.
Soon afterward, Mark began bringing documents home for her to sign. He marked the signature pages and told her the files involved routine tax adjustments, supplier contracts, and insurance renewals.
Anna signed several without reading them.
Her father had warned her never to do that.
“No matter how much you love someone,” he once said, “read everything that carries your name.”
Anna had laughed and replied, “Mark would never hurt me.”
Her father had not argued.
He had only looked sad.
After the Vermont receipt, Anna started reading every document. Mark became irritated when she asked questions. He accused her of slowing down important transactions.
Then papers began appearing with her signature already attached.
Mark explained that his assistant had used authorized digital copies.
Anna accepted the explanation because the alternative was terrifying.

If the signatures were unauthorized, her husband was committing fraud.
And if Mark was committing fraud, her marriage was only one part of the deception.
