Chapter 11 - Vanessa’s Confession

Vanessa contacted me at two in the morning.
She called the secure house line.
No one outside the police team was supposed to know the number.
“Do not hang up,” she said.
“Where are you?”
“I will tell you if you let me speak to Emily.”
“No.”
“I need to know she is safe.”
“You lost the right to ask.”
Her breathing became uneven.
“I know what you saw.”
“I saw you raise a hanger over my daughter.”
“I wasn’t going to strike her.”
“She said it happened every day.”
“I frightened them. I punished them. I became exactly what they told me I was.”
“Who told you?”
“My mother.”
“Miriam.”
Silence.
“You found the photograph.”
“Are you Violet Cross?”
“I was.”
“What did Rainer do to you?”
“They made fear feel like fire.”
Her words were strange but deliberate.
Vanessa explained that the Bellweather children had been exposed to an experimental compound designed to accelerate neurological responses.
Rainer hoped to create patients capable of extreme memory retention, rapid threat detection, and heightened physical reflexes.
Instead, most children suffered seizures, aggression, paranoia, or organ failure.
Vanessa survived.
So did Marcus.
The compound altered them differently.
Marcus developed unusually strong memory and analytical ability.
Vanessa developed heightened stress responses that could become violent when triggered.
Noah’s blood contained a naturally occurring protein capable of stabilizing the neurological changes.
“Why Noah?” I asked.
“Because of Sarah.”
“What does Sarah have to do with it?”
“Her father was one of the original Rainer researchers. He discovered the protein in his own family line. When he tried to stop the trials, they killed him.”
Sarah told me her father died of a heart attack.
Another lie constructed to protect us.
“Did you marry me to reach Noah?”
“At first.”
The answer cut through me.
“Miriam placed you at the grief center?”
“Yes.”
“You sabotaged Sarah’s car?”
“No.”
“Briggs said the woman who loved me did it.”
“He was talking about someone else.”
“Who?”
Vanessa began to cry.
“I cannot tell you.”
“You abused my children, lied to me, and helped a doctor take their blood. This is your last chance to tell the truth.”
“I was keeping Noah useful.”
The words filled me with disgust.
She hurried to explain.
“Victor wanted to drain enough samples to replicate the protein. Miriam wanted to take Noah overseas. I convinced them periodic collection was safer. As long as the blood results remained promising, they would not kill him.”
“You expect me to be grateful?”
“No.”
“What did you do to Emily?”
“Emily remembers too much. She saw people entering the house. She found the hidden room. Miriam ordered me to control her.”
“With a hanger?”
Vanessa sobbed.
“I hear Bellweather when children scream. I see the doctors. I lose time.”
“You could have left.”
“They had recordings. They had access to you. Every time I tried to stop, someone showed me how easily they could reach Noah.”
“What about the night I came home?”
“Emily found a phone under my bed. She tried to call you. Miriam was listening through the security system. She told me to make Emily confess where she had hidden it.”
“Then why did Miriam send me home?”
“I don’t know.”
“Where is Sarah?”
The line went quiet.
“Vanessa.”
“She is alive.”
I gripped the receiver.
“Where?”
“She has been alive the entire time.”
“Where is she?”
“I only saw her once.”
“When?”
“The night of the accident.”
Vanessa said Sarah discovered the sabotage before starting the car.
Miriam intercepted her and offered a choice.
Disappear voluntarily or watch Daniel and the children die.
Sarah entered another vehicle.
A body taken from a Rainer facility was placed in her car.
The crash was staged.
“Why would Miriam keep her alive?”
“Because Sarah knows how to produce the stabilizing protein.”
“Then she has been imprisoned for four years.”
“No.”
“What do you mean?”
“She chose to stay.”
I could not accept that.
Vanessa gave me an address in Grayhaven.
A former oceanographic station now owned by a Mercer subsidiary.
“Sarah is there?”
“She was.”
“Why tell me now?”
“Because Miriam has changed the plan. Noah is no longer enough.”
“What does she want?”
“Emily.”
A noise sounded behind Vanessa.
A door opening.
She whispered quickly.
“Do not trust Marcus. Do not trust Ortiz. Do not trust Sarah.”
May you like
A gunshot exploded through the phone.
The line went dead.
