Chapter 13 - The House Beneath the Lake

Claire refused to believe Evelyn was dead.

The amount of blood in the video looked theatrical, spread too evenly across the concrete. Cole agreed.

“Vale wants you reacting emotionally.”

“He wants me to leave the bank.”

“Or send security in the wrong direction.”

Daniel studied the video from his hospital room.

He noticed condensation on a metal pipe behind the chair.

“The room is underground or near water.”

Ortiz enhanced the background audio.

A low horn sounded every sixty seconds.

Whitmore recognized it.

“The Bellweather reservoir warning system.”

Silas Bellweather had built a private reservoir near the mountain estate to power an early hydroelectric facility. The property flooded after a dam expansion in 1987.

Most of the estate now lay beneath Lake Ashcroft.

Daniel’s map from the ambulance had marked a service road in the same region.

Federal agents prepared a search operation.

Claire insisted on going.

Ortiz objected.

Vale had specifically tried to expose Claire as the new trust chair. Bringing her to an isolated location made no tactical sense.

Then Martha called.

“I know where Evelyn is.”

She explained that the sisters had discovered a submerged service house beneath Lake Ashcroft. It had once connected to Bellweather’s hydroelectric tunnels.

“Vale used it to store records,” Martha said. “Evelyn believed he would return there.”

“Where are you?”

“With Harold.”

“Meet us at the lake.”

“No. Vale may still be tracking Andrew.”

Cole had replaced every compromised device.

Martha remained unconvinced.

She sent Claire coordinates and a message.

Silas built two entrances.

Vale knows only one.

The second entrance began inside an abandoned chapel on the northern shore.

Claire, Ortiz, Cole, Daniel, and a federal tactical team reached the chapel after dark.

A stone staircase descended beneath the altar.

The tunnel smelled of wet earth and rust.

Water dripped from the ceiling.

Halfway down, they found a wheelchair belonging to Evelyn.

One wheel was stained with blood.

Claire touched the handle.

“She was here.”

The tunnel led to a steel door.

Behind it lay a vast underground residence preserved beneath the lake.

Rooms were furnished in the style of the 1960s.

Family portraits covered the walls.

Silas Bellweather had built a hidden house beneath his estate.

In the main room, they found evidence of recent occupation.

Food wrappers.

Medical equipment.

Cameras.

A wall of monitors showed the bank, Richard’s house, and the hospital.

Vale had watched them from the beginning.

The tactical team spread through the corridors.

Claire found a bedroom containing two narrow beds.

Above one was the name Evelyn.

Above the other was a blank brass plaque.

Inside the wardrobe hung children’s dresses identical except for color.

Silas had known the second twin survived.

He had built a room for both girls, then erased one name.

Daniel called from the next room.

They found Evelyn lying on the floor beside the empty metal chair.

She was conscious but weak.

Claire dropped beside her.

“Grandma.”

Evelyn opened her eyes.

“You deposited the check.”

“I had to activate the trust.”

“You should have destroyed it.”

“You chose me.”

“I chose you to end it.”

Claire held her hand.

“Where is Vale?”

Evelyn pointed toward a steel hatch.

“He took Martha.”

Claire looked at Daniel.

Daniel’s face collapsed.

“Mother was with Harold.”

“No,” Evelyn whispered. “Harold was with Vale.”

Claire felt the pieces rearrange.

Mercer had known the bank’s systems.

He had removed the vault files.

He had controlled every video call with Martha.

He had disappeared at the exact moment the check was authenticated.

“Harold is Vale’s son,” Evelyn said.

Cole knelt beside her.

“We found adoption records showing his mother was your twin.”

“Forged. Harold created them.”

“Then who was he?”

“Adrian’s son and successor.”

A gunshot echoed through the underground house.

The lights went out.

Emergency lamps illuminated the corridor.

A voice filled the speaker system.

“Congratulations, Claire.”

Harold Mercer appeared on the monitors.

He no longer looked like the frightened bank manager.

His posture was straight.

His voice was calm.

“You activated the trust exactly as we hoped.”

Claire stood.

“You could have done that with the check.”

“No. Only a qualified successor could activate it.”

“What do you want?”

“The trust owns companies, property, and accounts. But its most valuable asset is access.”

“To what?”

Harold smiled.

“The Bellweather Continuity Program.”

Evelyn tried to rise.

“Do not listen to him.”

Harold continued.

“Silas did not build this underground house to hide money. He built it to preserve people.”

A steel wall opened behind the monitors.

Cold vapor spilled into the corridor.

Beyond the glass were rows of medical chambers.

Most were empty.

One contained Martha.

Another contained a woman who looked exactly like Evelyn had looked thirty years earlier.
