Chapter 13 - The Storage Facility

The storage facility appeared abandoned from the road.
Inside, investigators found rows of numbered units registered to shell companies connected to Graham.
The address from Jessica’s video led to unit 18.
Claire remained in a command vehicle with Naomi and David while officers searched the building.
Michael was held at the station.
Catherine and Elias waited at a secure location.
At eleven forty-eight, an officer opened unit 18.
There were no people inside.
Only boxes.
Hundreds of them.
Each carried a woman’s name.
The names matched Caroline’s slides.
Unit 18 contained Claire’s financial records, medical records, photographs of the house, copies of the girls’ school schedules, and transcripts of private conversations.
The surveillance extended back seven years.
Claire stared at the photographs displayed through the officer’s body camera.
Graham had not started targeting her six weeks earlier.
He had watched her for most of her marriage.
David covered his mouth.
“I brought him into your home.”
“You brought him into everyone’s home.”
The officers located the original Meridian index and multiple drives containing financial data.
They did not find Jessica.
They did not find Graham.
At midnight, every light inside the facility switched on at once.
A projector activated against the far wall.
Caroline Bennett appeared.
She was thinner than Claire remembered, seated in the archive room with the red ledger on her lap.
“If this message is playing,” Caroline said, “then Meridian has selected target eighteen.”
David stood inside the command vehicle.
“Caroline.”
The recording continued.
“Claire, I am sorry.”
Claire moved closer to the screen.
“I hoped Michael would become better than the people who taught him. Hope is not evidence. I should have understood that sooner.”
Caroline described the program Michael had mentioned.
She had built it with the help of a security consultant. The software monitored certain Meridian accounts and sent evidence packages when predetermined legal documents were created.
“But the program cannot activate itself,” Caroline said. “Someone must approve the final release.”
Claire looked at Naomi.
“Who?”
Caroline answered.
“The guardian of the ledger.”
Catherine.
Claire called her immediately.
Catherine denied activating anything.
“The access device was destroyed after Caroline died.”
“Could Elias have done it?”
“He didn’t know the program existed.”
In the storage unit, the recorded Caroline opened the red ledger.
“There is one person Graham will never suspect because he believes she is afraid of him.”
The video distorted.
For several seconds, the image disappeared.
When it returned, Caroline was standing.
“If she has chosen to help Claire, then the first slide will begin the end of Meridian.”
The recording stopped before naming the guardian.
At that exact moment, officers found a second door hidden behind the boxes.
It opened into a narrow office.
The computer inside was still running.
A live security feed showed the restaurant birthday room from six nights earlier.
Jessica holding the platter.
Michael standing behind Claire.
Olivia and Megan beside the table.
Someone had watched the entire confrontation.
Daniel traced the active connection.
“It’s being routed through multiple servers.”
“Can you find the source?” Naomi asked.
“Give me a minute.”
The monitor changed.
A live image appeared.
Jessica sat at a table, still wearing the green blazer. Behind her was a window overlooking a harbor.
She looked directly into the camera.
“Claire, the police are listening, so I’ll be precise.”
An investigator ordered the feed recorded.
Jessica continued.
“The Meridian evidence is real. Use it. Repay the victims. Destroy Graham publicly.”
“Where are you?” David asked.
Jessica’s expression changed at the sound of his voice.
For one instant, she looked like a daughter rather than an accomplice.
Then the hardness returned.
“I’m where Mom told me to go.”
David stepped toward the monitor.
“You activated Caroline’s program.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because Graham asked me to prepare the nineteenth file.”
Claire stared at the screen.
“Who is the next target?”
Jessica looked directly at her.
“You.”
Claire shook her head.
“I’m eighteen.”
“No. Eighteen was your money.”
Jessica leaned toward the camera.
“Nineteen is your identity.”
The feed went dark.
Daniel’s voice came through the command system.
“I found the source.”
“Where?” Claire asked.
“It wasn’t transmitted from the harbor.”
May you like
He paused.
“The signal came from inside David’s house.”
