Chapter 8 - Northbridge

The shooter escaped through the museum’s maintenance yard, leaving behind a rifle wiped clean of prints.

Police recovered one useful item: a train ticket from the attacker’s coat pocket. It had been purchased with a corporate card belonging to Helena’s personal foundation.

Helena denied involvement.

Willamina vanished before detectives could question her.

Grantham remained in the city, publicly insisting he was cooperating while privately filing for emergency custody of the children. His petition accused Evelyn of associating with armed criminals and placing Clara and Oliver in danger.

The judge rejected it after viewing the museum footage.

Evelyn moved with the children into a protected residence arranged by federal investigators. Clara asked why they could not go home. Oliver began sleeping with a lamp on.

Evelyn told them only what they needed to know: grown-ups had made dangerous choices, and she was working to keep them safe.

At night, after the children slept, she read the medical file Rose had given her.

The earliest entry dated to six weeks after Clara’s birth. Evelyn remembered exhaustion, anxiety, and a sense that the walls were always closing in. Grantham took her to a discreet specialist recommended by Marcus’s father.

The notes described her as suggestible under fatigue.

Another entry instructed Grantham to reinforce dependency by controlling appointments, transportation, and access to financial information.

It was not treatment.

It was a manual for imprisonment without bars.

Marcus read the file in silence.

“My father died five years ago,” he said. “I cannot ask him why.”

“Did he ever mention Northbridge?”

“Never.”

Rose, speaking through a secure video call, said Northbridge still operated under new directors. Its official owner was a pension fund. Its actual ownership disappeared behind trusts.

One trust was administered by Willamina.

Federal agents obtained a warrant after Ruth Bell, now in protective custody, gave a statement. Ruth confirmed that Cyrus Thorn had used physicians and private facilities to control employees and family members. She also identified Northbridge as the last place Samuel Wren visited while searching for records of the infant exchange.

The raid began before dawn.

Evelyn was not permitted to accompany the agents, but Marcus arranged for her to watch from a command center.

Body-camera footage showed long white corridors, locked treatment rooms, and offices stripped of computers minutes before entry. Most patients appeared to be legitimate residents receiving care. Three, however, had no legal admission records.

One was a former accountant for Thorn Legacy Holdings who had disappeared seven years earlier.

Another was a city inspector who once challenged renovations at Thorn House.

The third room was empty except for restraints and a photograph taped beneath the bed.

The photograph showed Evelyn’s father.

On the back, someone had written:

He remembered too much.

Agents found a basement archive protected by biometric locks. Inside were thousands of pages of medical files, surveillance reports, and financial documents. A server rack had been set on fire, but the suppression system limited the damage.

Among the recovered files was a video recorded twelve days before Samuel’s death.

In it, Samuel sat at a metal table across from Adrian Vale. He appeared weak but alert.

Adrian said, “Tell us where you placed the original Aurelia instrument.”

Samuel smiled. “Somewhere your son will find it when he finally chooses a side.”

Marcus flinched beside Evelyn.

The video continued.

Adrian warned Samuel that Evelyn’s marriage would proceed whether he approved or not. Samuel replied that Grantham was not the only Thorn courting her.

Then the recording cut off.

“What did he mean?” Evelyn asked.

No one knew.

A second file contained surveillance photographs of Evelyn during university. In several, Grantham watched from a distance before they had supposedly met.

In one photograph, another young man stood beside him.

The man’s face was partially obscured, but Evelyn recognized the distinctive scar along his hand.

It belonged to Marcus.

She turned slowly toward him.

Marcus looked at the image and closed his eyes.

“I can explain,” he said.

Evelyn stepped away.

“Then explain why you were helping my husband watch me three years before our first date.”
