Chapter 6 - Storage Unit 417

Olivia did not go alone.

At nine the next morning, she and Julian entered a climate-controlled storage facility on the west side.

Unit 417 was registered to a company that had dissolved twelve years earlier.

The brass key opened it.

Inside were thirty-two archive boxes.

A metal desk.

Two locked filing cabinets.

And a portrait of Charles Reed.

Olivia stared at the painting.

"That's unsettling," Julian said.

"Grandpa liked drama."

They began with the nearest box.

Financial statements.

Property records.

Old lawsuits.

Company minutes.

Then Julian found a file labeled H.R.

Henry Reed.

Inside were reports covering nearly twenty years.

Loans.

Unauthorized transfers.

Failed companies.

Payments to consultants.

Private settlements.

Olivia felt sick.

Her father had not experienced one financial crisis.

He had spent decades moving from crisis to crisis while Charles quietly prevented public collapse.

Another file contained Margaret's name.

Payments totaling more than two million dollars over twelve years.

"What are these?" Julian asked.

Olivia read the descriptions.

Personal consulting.

Residence maintenance.

Family representation.

None made sense.

Then she saw payments to Bradley Mercer.

Hundreds of them.

Some from Charles.

Some from Henry.

Some from entities Olivia did not recognize.

Julian opened the metal desk.

Inside was a digital recorder.

Old model.

No batteries.

Olivia picked it up.

Beneath it lay an envelope.

OLIVIA REED.

Her hands stopped.

The handwriting belonged to Charles.

She knew immediately.

She opened the envelope.

Olivia,

If you are reading this, either I misjudged time or Henry has forced the matter earlier than I hoped.

You may be angry.

You should be.

I kept information from you because freedom inherited too early can become another form of captivity.

Olivia stopped reading.

"What's wrong?" Julian asked.

"Nothing."

But her voice had broken.

She continued.

You were the only member of this family who built something before asking what you would receive.

That mattered to me.

There are assets set aside for you, but the assets are not the important part.

The important part is why they exist.

Your father believes inheritance is proof of love.

He is wrong.

Inheritance is responsibility.

If Henry begins demanding control over what you have built, do not fight him where he expects.

Follow ownership.

Follow debt.

And above all, find the second ledger before he does.

The letter ended there.

Julian read the last sentence.

"Second ledger?"

Olivia shook her head.

They searched every box.

No ledger.

Then Julian found a floor plan taped beneath the desk.

It showed the Reed Industrial headquarters from 2004.

A red circle marked an archive room.

April 14.

The date from the photograph.

At the bottom Charles had written:

THE FIRST LEDGER PROVED WHAT HENRY TOOK.

THE SECOND PROVES WHY.

Olivia felt a chill.

A noise came from the hallway.

Metal scraping.

Julian moved toward the door.

The handle turned.

Olivia froze.

Someone was trying to enter.

Julian reached for his phone.

The lock rattled harder.

Then stopped.

Footsteps retreated.

Julian opened the door.

The hallway was empty.

But near the elevator lay a torn piece of paper.

Olivia picked it up.

It was part of a printed photograph.

Only the bottom half remained.

A pair of men's shoes.

A date.

April 14, 2004.

May you like

And a handwritten note:

ASK DANIEL WHAT HE FOUND.
