Chapter 6 - The Barbecue Trap

The barbecue was supposed to celebrate Daniel’s father’s retirement.

Claire considered skipping it.

Naomi had advised her to avoid unnecessary conflict until the documents were ready. Helen was completing the final report, and the company’s board was scheduled to meet on Monday morning.

Daniel would be terminated before noon.

The divorce petition would be delivered afterward.

Claire planned to leave quietly.

But Daniel insisted she attend.

“My family will ask questions if you’re missing.”

Claire almost replied that his concern had nothing to do with her presence and everything to do with appearances.

Instead, she said, “I’ll be there.”

The morning of the barbecue, Claire packed two suitcases and loaded them into the black SUV.

She intended to drive directly to a short-term apartment after the gathering.

Daniel saw the luggage.

“Why are those in the car?”

“Donation items,” she said.

He accepted the explanation without checking.

At the cabin, Claire noticed Marissa’s influence before Ava said a word.

Ava avoided her.

She remained close to Daniel and checked her phone repeatedly. Once, Claire saw a message appear on the screen.

Make him choose publicly.

Ava turned the phone over when she realized Claire was nearby.

Claire’s stomach tightened.

She could have left then.

Instead, she continued carrying supplies from the SUV.

Part of her still hoped Ava would refuse whatever plan Marissa had created.

The accidental brush happened shortly after three in the afternoon.

Ava’s reaction was immediate, almost rehearsed.

“Don’t ever touch me again!”

Claire saw fear beneath the performance.

Not fear of Claire.

Fear that she might fail at something.

Daniel’s response was equally fast.

“Apologize to her—or leave.”

The relatives turned toward them.

For one strange moment, Claire felt detached from the scene.

She noticed small details with unusual clarity.

A napkin lifted from the picnic table and rolled across the grass.

The grill hissed as grease struck the flame.

A boat moved across the lake in the distance, leaving a white line on the water.

Daniel’s face was red with anger.

Ava’s hands were shaking.

Claire understood that the moment had been designed to humiliate her.

Marissa had likely encouraged Ava to create a public confrontation. Daniel, whether he knew about the plan or not, had done exactly what they expected.

He had chosen appearances over truth.

Claire did not argue.

That confused Daniel.

He was prepared for tears, explanations, and desperate attempts to make him understand.

Instead, she removed the bracelet.

“You really believe I would hurt her?”

Daniel’s silence answered.

When Claire placed the bracelet on the SUV bumper, Eleanor finally stood.

“Claire, perhaps everyone should calm down.”

Claire looked at her mother-in-law.

For nine years, Eleanor had watched Daniel use silence as punishment. She had advised Claire to be patient, flexible, and understanding.

Not once had she advised her son to be honest.

“I am calm,” Claire said.

That was what frightened them.

She closed the rear hatch and reached for the driver’s door.

Daniel followed.

“You are embarrassing yourself.”

“No,” Claire replied. “I’m finished protecting you from embarrassment.”

His expression changed.

“What does that mean?”

Claire placed the keys beside the folder.

“Read the envelope waiting at home.”

For the first time that day, Daniel looked uncertain.

Claire got into the SUV.

Ava stood behind him.

Their eyes met through the windshield.

Claire saw guilt there.

She also saw a silent plea.

Come back. Make this disappear. Let all of us pretend again.

Claire started the engine.

May you like

She loved Ava enough not to teach her that false accusations should be rewarded with surrender.

Then she drove away.
