Chapter 11 - The Brother Who Disappeared

Henry's recording ended before explaining everything.

Samuel had been instructed to provide the remaining documents only after verifying that Diane had actively threatened Michael or Lily's family status.

"She has," Michael said.

Samuel nodded.

He opened a safe.

Inside was a hospital file.

Henry had discovered the truth during the final year of his life.

Diane had given birth to twin boys.

February twenty-sixth.

One infant was healthy.

The other developed respiratory complications and was transferred briefly to another unit.

Two weeks later, the hospital issued revised paperwork stating that only one live birth had occurred.

Michael stared at the documents.

"How can a child disappear from a hospital?"

Samuel answered, "Thirty-six years ago, record systems were not what they are today. And wealthy people could create pressure."

Emma asked the question Michael could not.

"What happened to the other baby?"

Samuel handed them Henry's handwritten notes.

Henry believed Diane had arranged a private adoption.

Not because the child was sick.

Because a genetic test performed during treatment revealed something devastating.

The twins did not have the same father.

Michael stared at the page.

"That's possible?"

Samuel nodded.

"Rare, but possible. Heteropaternal superfecundation. Two eggs fertilized by different men during the same cycle."

Emma understood.

One twin could be Henry's.

The other Robert's.

Diane had been involved with both men during the same period.

Michael whispered, "Which one am I?"

Samuel shook his head.

"Henry never learned."

"What happened to my brother?"

"Henry traced an adoption to a family named Mercer."

Michael looked up.

"Where is he?"

Samuel hesitated.

"Alive."

The word struck Michael harder than anything else.

"Where?"

"Connecticut."

"Name?"

"Daniel Mercer."

Michael stood.

"Give me the address."

Samuel raised a hand.

"Michael."

"Give me the address."

"Henry contacted Daniel."

Silence.

Michael slowly sat down.

"When?"

"Four months before he died."

"And?"

"Daniel refused contact."

Michael looked wounded.

"Why?"

"Because Diane had already found him first."

Emma whispered, "Of course she had."

According to Henry's notes, Diane discovered he was investigating the adoption.

She contacted Daniel and told him Henry was a wealthy dying man attempting to manipulate him into an inheritance dispute.

She claimed Michael knew everything and wanted Daniel kept away.

Michael stared.

"She told my brother I rejected him."

"Yes."

Emma's anger became almost physical.

"Why?"

Samuel answered, "Control."

Again, that word.

Always control.

Michael stood beside the window for a long time.

Then he turned.

"We're going to find Daniel."

The trip took two hours.

Daniel Mercer lived in a modest house near the coast.

He was thirty-six.

Dark-haired.

Broad-shouldered.

When he opened the door, Emma immediately saw something familiar.

Not Michael's eyes.

His smile.

The same slight asymmetry.

The same expression Henry had worn in photographs.

Daniel looked at Michael and instantly knew.

"No."

Michael swallowed.

"I just want to talk."

"I told Henry no."

"My mother lied to you."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Which mother?"

Michael stopped.

Daniel's face changed.

"Yeah. I know who Diane Bennett is."

"She told you I knew about you."

"She told me you paid her to make sure I stayed away."

"I didn't know you existed until today."

Daniel stared at him.

For the first time, uncertainty appeared.

Emma handed him Henry's letter.

Daniel did not take it.

Michael said, "Please."

Eventually Daniel opened the door wider.

Inside, they talked for three hours.

Daniel had been raised by loving adoptive parents.

He wanted no fortune.

No mansion.

No Bennett name.

He had a wife and two children.

He only wanted truth.

When Diane contacted him the previous year, she offered two million dollars for a permanent confidentiality agreement.

He refused.

Michael almost smiled.

"So she threatened you."

Daniel nodded.

"She said if I came near your family, she'd prove I was an opportunist."

Emma asked, "Did she ever mention Lily?"

Daniel looked at her.

"Yes."

Emma's stomach dropped.

"What did she say?"

"She said a new generation made old problems dangerous."

Michael's face hardened.

Daniel went upstairs.

He returned carrying an envelope.

"Diane gave me this."

Inside was a DNA laboratory report.

It claimed Daniel Mercer was Henry Bennett's biological son.

Michael stared at it.

Emma looked at Daniel.

"Did you verify it independently?"

"No."

Emma knew before anyone said it.

The report could be another manipulation.

Daniel continued.

"She told me if the truth came out, you would lose everything."

Michael laughed softly.

"She told Emma the same thing."

Daniel looked at him.

"So what now?"

May you like

Michael answered.

"We stop letting her decide what truth means."
