Chapter 12 - Sarah’s Apology

Sarah asked to speak with Lily.

I refused at first.

An apology could become another demand placed on a child: forgive the adult so everyone else could feel comfortable. I told Sarah that Lily owed her nothing.

“I know,” she said. “I want to say it without asking for anything back.”

Lily chose to meet her in Naomi’s conference room with me beside her.

Sarah wore no makeup. She knelt several feet away.

“I locked you outside,” she said. “You were cold and scared, and I knew that. I said you were not family because I wanted to hurt your mother. None of it was your fault. I was cruel.”

Lily held Bunny tightly. “Why?”

“Because I wanted something, and I cared more about getting it than about being good.”

“Are you good now?”

Sarah’s eyes filled. “Not because I said sorry. I have to prove what I do next.”

Lily considered this, then said, “You can’t hug me.”

“I understand.”

“But you can help find Thomas.”

Sarah nodded.

The lead came from Grant’s old calendar. Every year on August 14, he blocked three hours with the code B.H. ORIGINAL. Daniel connected it to Blue Heron’s first office, an abandoned insurance archive beneath a courthouse annex.

Police found Thomas there inside a records vault. He was weak but alive. More importantly, the vault contained backup drives Grant had not known Thomas discovered.

The files exposed the entire scheme: forged waivers, hidden DNA reports, bribed medical evaluations, and planned transfers totaling thirty-one million dollars.

Richard’s involvement was extensive. He had begun hiding Rose’s identity years before Grant entered the family. Grant transformed the old deception into a financial operation.

Father was arrested on charges related to fraud, obstruction, and witness intimidation. Dr. Pike was arrested the same day. Grant remained missing.

Sarah agreed to cooperate with prosecutors and surrendered her personal claim to immediate distributions. She also signed a permanent acknowledgment of Lily as a protected family beneficiary.

The court accepted the original certificate.

The trust was safe.

At least legally.

Then Rose disappeared from the hospital.

On her pillow she left a note for me.

Claire,

Do not mistake a courtroom victory for the end. Eleanor did not create the hidden archive only to protect money. She created it because one of the assets in the trust is not listed in any schedule you have seen.

Grant knows what it is.

So does your mother.

Ask her about Blackwater Island.
