Chapter 6 - The Money on the Table

Claire asked Elliot to come to Arthur’s house on Thursday.

She did not explain why.

Elliot arrived already angry. He assumed Claire was planning another emotional appeal, and he had prepared several arguments about boundaries, financial responsibility, and business obligations.

Then he saw the cash on the kitchen table.

Arthur had withdrawn the final dollars from his savings account. The bills lay beside the medical invoice like evidence of a life reduced to numbers.

“What did you tell Claire about me?” Elliot demanded.

The confrontation unfolded quickly.

Claire accused him of abandoning their father.

Elliot defended the company.

Arthur reminded him about the truck.

Then Arthur placed the legal envelope on the table.

“And yesterday, I changed who receives everything I leave behind.”

Elliot’s face drained of color.

“What did you do?”

Arthur opened the envelope.

“My will now leaves this house to Claire. The remaining estate will go to the regional cancer support center.”

“You’re cutting me out?”

“I’m removing your expectation.”

“Because I wouldn’t give you thirty-eight thousand dollars?”

“No. Because you looked at me when I was frightened and decided my fear was an inconvenience.”

Elliot turned toward Claire.

“You did this.”

Claire shook her head.

“Dad made his own decision.”

“You’ve been manipulating him.”

Arthur placed another document on the table.

“This is the loan agreement you signed.”

Elliot stared at it.

Arthur’s voice remained calm.

“I am requesting repayment.”

“You said I didn’t have to pay.”

“I said you could wait until the business was stable.”

“That agreement is ancient.”

“The lawyer says it is still enforceable.”

Elliot grabbed the back of a chair.

“You’re trying to destroy my company.”

“I am trying to pay for surgery with money I earned and money you promised to return.”

Elliot looked from Arthur to Claire.

Neither looked away.

For years, anger had allowed him to control every family conversation. This time, it had nowhere to land.

He walked out without another word.

The black SUV disappeared down the street.

Arthur stared at the closed door.

Claire touched his shoulder.

“Are you all right?”

“No,” he admitted.

Then he looked at the papers.

“But I think I will be.”
