Chapter 7 - The Evidence in the Wall
Three days later, workers repaired the damaged ventilation panel between Emma’s bedroom and the study.
One of them found a narrow compartment inside the wall.
It contained a small digital recorder.
Arthur had placed it there.
The final recording was dated the night before his death.
Michael’s voice came first.
“You cannot give the house to Emma.”
“It is not yours to receive,” Arthur answered.
“I am your son.”
“You are a man who forged my name.”
“You’ll destroy your own family over paperwork?”
“You destroyed trust. The paperwork only proves it.”
A chair scraped across the floor.
Michael lowered his voice.
“Sign the old will and this ends.”
“No.”
“You think Elias will protect you?”
“I think the truth will.”
Then came the sentence that ended any remaining doubt about Michael’s intentions.
“If you refuse, I’ll make sure Mother never sees your letter.”
The recording stopped.
It did not prove Michael caused Arthur’s death.
But it proved the threats, the fraud, and the attempt to conceal the revised estate plan.
The laboratory report arrived the same afternoon.
Arthur’s medication had been replaced with pills at more than triple the intended strength.
The excessive dose could have worsened his heart condition.
Investigators found Michael’s fingerprints on the inner container.
Sarah’s fingerprints were also present.
She admitted she had handed Arthur the pills after Michael told her the doctor had changed the dosage.
She agreed to cooperate fully.
Michael was arrested the next morning.
News cameras waited outside the hotel.
He covered his face as officers led him toward a car.
I watched from the mansion television with the sound muted.
There was no satisfaction in seeing my son arrested.
Only grief.
