Chapter 10 - The Brother Buried in Records

Ortiz shot the nearest vent cover, but the gas continued to pour into the corridor.
Officers wrapped cloth over their mouths. A medic placed an oxygen mask on Rachel. Emily's lungs tightened as Thomas pushed her wheelchair toward the steel door.
The medallion no longer opened it.
"Manual release!" Ortiz shouted.
One officer searched the wall while another fired into the electronic lock. The first bullets flattened against reinforced steel. The gas thickened, carrying a sweet chemical odor.
Emily's vision blurred.
Then Thomas ripped a fire extinguisher from its mount and smashed the wall beside the keypad. Wires spilled out. He crossed two cables, and the lock snapped open.
They reached the stairwell seconds before the corridor filled completely.
Outside, Rachel was transported to a secure clinic. Thomas sat on the rear step of an ambulance while Ortiz demanded the truth.
His twin brother's name was Michael.
They had been separated at age three after their foster home closed. Thomas was adopted by a mechanic and his wife. Michael vanished into another placement. Years later, Thomas searched for him and discovered a death certificate stating Michael Carter died at age nine from pneumonia at St. Catherine.
"I believed it," Thomas said. "There was a grave."
"Did you ever confirm the body?" Ortiz asked.
"I was twenty-two. I had no reason to suspect the hospital falsified children's deaths."
The microfilm offered a darker explanation. Asterion records referenced two Carter boys evaluated for "behavioral continuity." One was marked unsuitable. The other was marked retained.
Thomas was released.
Michael was retained.
Emily looked at her father. "What does that mean?"
"It means they raised him," Thomas said. "Or used him."
Rachel regained enough clarity to describe the man who abducted her. He resembled Thomas, but a scar crossed his throat. He wore the silver Asterion ring and spoke about Emily as though she were property.
"He said the successor had to choose willingly," Rachel told Ortiz. "He said force ruined the legitimacy of the transfer."
"Choose what?" Emily asked.
"He didn't say."
The attack on Eleanor's ambulance had been professionally executed. The driver was found sedated under an overpass. The ambulance itself was abandoned near the river. Eleanor was gone.
Security footage showed a man helping her into another vehicle.
He had Thomas's face.
Daniel's encrypted drive yielded another folder. It contained childhood evaluations of Michael Carter, including recordings of sessions with Dr. Harold Wren.
In one video, nine-year-old Michael sat beneath a bright lamp.
"Who is your family?" Wren asked.
"Asterion is my family," the boy answered.
"Who must be protected?"
"The line."
"Who must inherit?"
Michael hesitated.
Wren struck the table.
"Who must inherit?"
"The chosen child."
The recording date was one week before Michael's official death.
Emily turned away.
Thomas stood with both hands against the wall, shoulders shaking with a grief older than their marriage, older than Emily, older than every lie he had learned to live inside.
A technician entered with new information. Daniel's drive included coordinates linked to an Asterion property outside the city: a private rehabilitation center called Briar Glen.
Public records showed it closed five years earlier.
Recent satellite images showed vehicles on the grounds.
Ortiz organized a raid.
Before leaving, Emily received another message from Daniel's number.
This time it contained only an audio file.
Daniel was breathing hard. In the background, Noah coughed.
"Emily," Daniel said, "Michael is not the Architect. Eleanor is not the Architect. They are trying to wake someone who has been hidden for years. Do not let them take you to the lake."
A blow ended the recording.
Thomas looked at the coordinates for Briar Glen.
May you like
The abandoned center stood beside Lake Aster.
Inside Briar Glen, officers found a classroom with twelve small desks bolted to the floor. Names had been carved beneath them by children who were officially dead. Michael's name appeared under the third desk. Beside it was another: Jonathan. Thomas stared at the carving until Ortiz pulled him away from incoming fire. Later, a recovered lesson book described the Founder as the "keeper of continuity," above both council and Architect. Children were taught that the Founder could assume any identity because institutions, not faces, created legal existence. Birth certificates, school files, medical charts, and death records could all be rewritten. The title might pass from person to person, or the same individual might have lived beneath several names. Daniel's warning about waking someone hidden for years no longer sounded symbolic.
