Chapter 10 - The Housekeeper's Secret)

The estate security camera showed Mrs. Hart leaving through the west service gate at two seventeen.

Elliot sat in the passenger seat.

No struggle.

No visible fear.

That detail mattered.

Conrad knew Mrs. Hart.

Elliot trusted her.

Which made the possibility of betrayal worse.

Police issued an alert immediately.

Conrad drove south with Samuel while Santos coordinated from Burlington.

Nobody could reach Mrs. Hart.

Her phone was off.

Her apartment above the Bellafonte carriage house was empty.

Her passport remained in a desk drawer.

No suitcase was missing.

No large cash withdrawal had occurred.

"That doesn't look like running," Samuel said.

Conrad gripped the steering wheel.

"She took my son."

"Yes."

"That's running."

Samuel looked at him.

"Or protecting."

"From who?"

"I don't know."

Conrad drove faster.

His phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered instantly.

"Conrad."

Mrs. Hart.

"Where is Elliot?"

"Safe."

"Put him on."

A pause.

Then Elliot's voice.

"Daddy?"

Conrad almost stopped the car.

"I'm here, champ. Are you okay?"

"Mrs. Hart says surprise trip."

Conrad closed his eyes.

"Are you hurt?"

"No."

"Are you scared?"

"No."

Mrs. Hart returned.

"I'm sorry."

"Where are you?"

"I couldn't tell you."

"Tell me now."

"Not on the phone."

Conrad's voice hardened.

"You have my son."

"I know."

"If you ever cared about him, tell me where you are."

Mrs. Hart began crying.

That startled him.

"I promised Celeste."

Conrad froze.

"What?"

"I promised her I would wait until the evidence was found."

Samuel leaned closer.

Conrad activated speaker.

Mrs. Hart continued.

"If the storage unit was opened, I was supposed to take Elliot somewhere secure."

"Why?"

"Because Celeste believed Julian would try to use him."

Conrad looked at Samuel.

"Where are you?"

"St. Matthew's Retreat."

Samuel recognized it.

"A monastery guest house outside Stockbridge."

Mrs. Hart heard him.

"Yes."

Conrad turned the car toward Massachusetts.

"Why did you enter the storage unit seven months ago?"

Silence.

"Mrs. Hart."

"Celeste told me to."

"Celeste has been dead three years."

"She left instructions."

"What did you remove?"

"The blue box."

"Where is it?"

"Here."

Conrad exhaled.

"Do not move."

"I won't."

"Do not let Elliot out of your sight."

"I won't."

"And if anyone appears..."

"I know."

The call ended.

Conrad stared at the road.

Samuel said, "She followed a contingency plan."

"She took my child without asking."

"Yes."

"I may fire her."

"Probably."

Conrad glanced at him.

Samuel continued.

"After you thank her."

Two hours later, Conrad entered the retreat house.

Elliot ran across the hallway.

"Daddy!"

Conrad dropped to his knees.

The boy hit him hard enough to knock him backward.

Conrad held him.

For a long time.

Then he looked over Elliot's shoulder.

Mrs. Hart stood near the staircase.

Her eyes were red.

A blue metal box sat beside her.

Conrad stood.

"Explain everything."

She nodded.

They sat inside a small private library.

Elliot fell asleep against Conrad again.

Mrs. Hart began.

"Celeste knew she was dying."

Conrad looked down.

"Everyone keeps telling me what Celeste knew."

Mrs. Hart lowered her eyes.

"She also knew you were falling apart."

That silenced him.

"She loved you too much to ask you to fight another war while she was dying."

Conrad swallowed.

Mrs. Hart continued.

"She gave each of us a piece."

"Us?"

"Elias. Samuel. Me."

Samuel frowned.

"I didn't know about you."

"That was the point."

Celeste had divided the evidence.

No single person possessed enough to expose everything.

If one was threatened, the others could still continue.

"If Agatha found one of us," Mrs. Hart said, "she couldn't destroy all of it."

Conrad looked toward the blue box.

"What is inside?"

Mrs. Hart handed him a key.

"Something Celeste hoped you would never need."

Conrad opened it.

Three hard drives.

A sealed letter.

A birth certificate.

And a photograph.

The photograph showed Agatha as a young woman.

Beside her stood a man Conrad did not recognize.

In her arms was a newborn baby.

Written on the back were two words.

Julian. 1988.

Samuel picked up the birth certificate.

"Father listed as Peter Mercer."

Conrad frowned.

"Who?"

Mrs. Hart answered.

"Dominic's business partner."

Conrad stared.

His father's partner.

Samuel's eyes widened.

"Peter Mercer died in 1991."

Mrs. Hart nodded.

"Car accident."

Conrad looked at the surname.

Mercer.

Julian had kept his biological father's name.

Mrs. Hart continued.

"Dominic discovered the affair shortly before you were born."

Conrad's head snapped up.

"Affair?"

"Agatha and Peter were together after she married Dominic."

The room went silent.

Mrs. Hart looked at him with pity.

"Julian wasn't born before your parents met."

Conrad understood.

His stomach turned.

"He was born during their marriage."

"Yes."

"Then why did my father stay?"

"I don't know."

Samuel looked toward the hard drives.

"Maybe Dominic explains."

They connected the first drive.

The first folder contained recordings.

The second contained financial evidence.

The third had a single file.

DOMINIC FOR CONRAD.

Conrad opened it.

His father appeared on screen.

Older.

Sick.

But clear eyed.

"Son," Dominic said, "if Celeste found a way to get this to you, then she did what I was too ashamed to do."

Conrad leaned closer.

Dominic continued.

"I need to tell you why your mother hates your wife."

Conrad stopped breathing.

"It was never because Celeste married into our family."

Dominic looked down.

"It was because Celeste discovered who your mother truly intended to leave the family to."

The video glitched.

Then resumed.

Conrad heard one sentence before the screen froze.

"She intended to make Julian my heir."

Samuel stared at the dead image.

Conrad slowly looked toward the blue box.

Agatha's financial crimes were no longer simply theft.

They were part of succession.

A plan that had started decades earlier.

And Elliot had become the final obstacle.
