Chapter 5 - The Trap They Built

Ethan expected Isabella to resist the divorce.

When she remained calm, he became suspicious.

He instructed his personal attorney to investigate her finances.

The investigation found almost nothing.

Isabella’s visible bank accounts contained only household allowances Ethan had transferred during the marriage. Her car was registered to Ashford Crown. The mansion belonged to a corporate estate entity. Most of her jewelry had been gifts controlled by family trusts.

Ethan concluded that she was financially helpless.

It was exactly what Isabella wanted him to believe.

The true ownership records of Meridian Vale Holdings were protected through lawful private structures established by her father. They were not hidden from regulators, banks, or the board.

They were simply beyond the reach of a careless private investigator searching for ordinary assets.

Ethan’s confidence returned.

He invited Cassandra to the coastal villa and promised that Isabella would soon disappear from their lives.

Meanwhile, Evelyn planned the humiliation in the library.

She ordered the household staff to prepare the fireplace, polish the marble desk, and open a rare bottle of red wine.

Rosa Alvarez, the mansion’s longtime housekeeper, overheard the instructions.

Rosa had worked for the Ashfords for twenty-four years. She had watched Evelyn mistreat employees, insult guests, and dismiss anyone she considered socially inferior.

She had also watched Isabella quietly pay for staff medical bills, help workers’ children apply to universities, and sit beside a dying gardener when no Ashford family member visited him.

Rosa found Isabella in the greenhouse.

“Mrs. Ashford, I believe they are planning something cruel.”

Isabella continued trimming a damaged leaf from an orchid.

“They have been planning something cruel for eight years.”

“This feels different.”

“I know.”

Rosa lowered her voice.

“Mrs. Ashford ordered me to place a wine bottle in the library. She said the carpets should be protected but the desk should not.”

Isabella put down the scissors.

“Thank you for telling me.”

“Should I remove it?”

“No.”

Rosa stared at her.

“You want her to pour it?”

“I want witnesses to see exactly who they are.”

Isabella arranged for Olivia to wait in a nearby room. Corporate security would remain outside until called. Marcus would assemble the independent directors by secure conference.

The mansion’s internal security cameras already recorded the library entrances, but Isabella asked the estate manager to confirm that the system was functioning.

She did not know whether Evelyn would pour the wine.

She knew only that Ethan and his mother behaved most honestly when they believed no consequence could reach them.

On Friday afternoon, Isabella dressed in burgundy satin.

It was not a color she usually wore.

Her father had once told her that courage did not need to be loud, but it should never make itself small.

She pinned her hair over one shoulder and placed his fountain pen beside the sealed Meridian folder.

Before entering the library, she paused near the portrait of Julian Vale hanging unnoticed in the western hall.

Ethan had once asked why she kept a painting of “an unknown professor” in the mansion.

She had not corrected him.

Now she touched the bottom edge of the frame.

“I think I waited long enough,” she whispered.

Then she entered the library and sat at the marble desk.

Ethan tossed the divorce papers in front of her.

Evelyn lifted the wine bottle.

The trap closed around the people who believed they had built it for her.
