Chapter 13 - Arthur returns)

Arthur Blackwood called Vanessa at 11:42 that night.
She answered on speaker with federal agents recording.
“Dad?”
Silence.
Then:
“Vanessa.”
She began crying.
“You’re alive.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I don’t have time.”
Claire leaned toward the phone.
“They took Emily.”
Arthur became silent.
Then cursed.
Claire said, “You knew where she was.”
“Yes.”
“You kept my daughter from me for eight years.”
“I kept her alive.”
“Where is she?”
“I don’t know.”
Claire slammed her fist against the table.
“Everybody keeps saying that.”
Arthur continued.
“Listen carefully. Preston is not the architect.”
“Then who is?”
“Your husband discovered a second Continuity network.”
Claire froze.
“Second?”
“My father built the first system. I helped dismantle it.”
Margaret’s words returned.
Arthur helped build the system.
Arthur continued.
“But someone rebuilt it without us.”
“Who?”
“I believed it was Preston.”
“And now?”
“Preston is too stupid.”
Vanessa almost laughed despite everything.
Arthur continued.
“The necklace was part of an authentication protocol.”
Claire stared.
“What?”
“Each original Continuity trustee received a distinctive asset. Jewelry, artwork, watches. The assets contained micro-engraved identifiers.”
Thomas Reed examined the recovered necklace photographs.
Arthur said, “Margaret’s necklace authenticated Trust 17.”
“So Preston stole it to open something?”
“Yes.”
“What?”
“The primary trust.”
Vanessa whispered, “How much?”
Arthur paused.
“Not money.”
Claire felt dread.
“What does the trust control?”
“Blackwood Capital voting authority.”
Vanessa sat down.
Arthur continued.
“And six associated foundations, three private banks, two media companies, and assets valued above eleven billion dollars.”
Claire stared at the phone.
“And Emily owns it?”
“Potentially.”
“Why?”
“Because of what Daniel did the night she was born.”
Claire’s voice sharpened.
“Explain.”
“I can’t over the phone.”
“Then come here.”
“I’m trying.”
“Where are you?”
Arthur remained silent.
Then a noise sounded through the call.
A door.
Arthur breathed sharply.
“Someone found me.”
Vanessa stood.
“Dad?”
“Listen.”
Footsteps.
Arthur spoke faster.
“Daniel changed Emily’s identity designation.”
“To what?”
“He registered her as a Blackwood continuity heir.”
Claire almost dropped the phone.
“That makes no sense.”
“It was the only way to prevent Margaret from transferring her. The system protected designated heirs more aggressively than ordinary assets.”
“You’re saying Daniel made my daughter legally part of your family to save her?”
“Yes.”
“And now she controls your fortune?”
“If the designation matured.”
“When?”
Arthur’s voice changed.
“On her eighth birthday.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Six days ago.
That explained the timing.
The wedding.
The necklace.
Preston’s panic.
Someone had been waiting for Emily to turn eight.
Arthur whispered, “They don’t need Emily dead.”
Claire looked at Hayes.
“What do they need?”
“Her signature.”
“She’s eight.”
“The trust accepts biometric authorization.”
Claire felt sick.
Arthur continued.
“They need her alive.”
“That should make me feel better?”
“No.”
Another noise.
Closer.
Arthur whispered:
“Claire, Daniel trusted one person more than me.”
“Who?”
“If you find him, find the scar on his left hand.”
“Name.”
Arthur breathed heavily.
Then said:
“Thomas Reed.”
Claire slowly looked across the room.
Thomas Reed stood beside the computer.
The security manager from the wedding.
The man who preserved the footage.
The man who had helped them at Briarwood.
The man who had known about the ivory box.
Thomas looked at Claire.
Their eyes met.
On his left hand was a thin white scar.
Arthur screamed through the phone.
A gunshot followed.
The call disconnected.
Every agent in the room turned toward Thomas.
He raised his hands.
May you like
And said quietly:
“I was wondering when Arthur would finally tell you.”
