Chapter 11 - the room beneath the hospital

Michael, Samuel, Owen, and one police officer entered the basement through the maintenance elevator.
The hospital above them remained bright and orderly.
Below, the walls were unfinished concrete.
Pipes crossed the ceiling. Old signs pointed toward storage rooms and decommissioned wards.
Owen led them to a steel door marked AUTHORIZED TRANSPORT ONLY.
The electronic lock had recently been replaced.
Michael used Lenora’s confiscated access card.
The door opened.
Cold air moved through the passage beyond it.
The old ambulance tunnel descended beneath the north parking lot. Dust covered most of the floor, but fresh tire marks crossed the center.
Samuel aimed a flashlight toward the walls.
“Someone has been using this.”
They reached a loading room with a second entrance opening toward the hillside.
A white medical van was parked inside.
The engine was warm.
The rear doors stood open.
Inside were child-sized restraints, medical monitoring equipment, forged transfer forms, and a folder labeled LILY HART.
Samuel lunged toward the van.
The officer held him back.
“Let us document it.”
Michael opened the folder without touching the loose pages.
The forms authorized Lily’s transfer to Rosebridge Recovery Center, a private Meridian facility located outside the state.
The same facility where Michael had been confined after the crash.
The guardian signature line carried Samuel’s forged name.
Michael felt sick.
“They were going to take her where they took me.”
Samuel read the admission reason.
Long-term cognitive and respiratory incapacity.
“She is neither.”
“They planned to make it appear that way.”
Owen examined the driver’s compartment.
“There’s a second phone.”
The officer photographed it before picking it up with a glove.
The screen displayed one unread message.
TARGET ENTERED HOSPITAL. WAIT FOR CONFIRMATION.
The sender was saved as E.C.
Samuel stared at the initials.
“Evelyn Cross.”
Michael shook his head.
“It could be someone using her identity.”
The phone rang.
Everyone froze.
The screen still showed E.C.
The officer activated the speaker.
No one spoke.
A woman’s breathing could be heard.
Then a distorted voice said, “The child is not safe upstairs.”
Michael stepped closer.
“Who is this?”
The call ended.
Samuel grabbed the phone.
“Evelyn?”
The screen went black.
Owen moved toward a control panel on the wall.
“This room has its own camera system.”
He turned on a monitor.
Four security feeds appeared.
One showed the tunnel.
One showed the loading entrance.
One showed the van.
The fourth showed Lily’s hospital room.
Michael’s blood ran cold.
Someone had installed a hidden camera inside the room where his daughter slept.
He called Dr. Patel immediately.
“Move Lily now. Use a room selected by security, not administration. Do not announce the location.”
The camera feed showed nurses entering Lily’s room.
Samuel looked at Michael.
“Whoever sent us here knew about the van.”
“They may have been trying to expose it.”
“Then why not go to the police?”
“Because Victor controls people far beyond this hospital.”
The officer looked toward the loading entrance.
“We need to clear this area.”
A sound came from inside the tunnel.
Metal scraping against concrete.
Owen raised his flashlight.
A figure stood near the far end.
“Police!” the officer called. “Do not move.”
The figure turned and ran.
Michael followed before anyone could stop him.
He reached the tunnel exit as the figure pushed through the outer door.
Lightning illuminated a woman in a red coat.
The same woman who had been sitting near the front of Samuel’s bus.
Michael caught the door before it closed.
The woman stood in the rain.
She looked at him over her shoulder.
For one second, Michael saw her face.
Older.
Thinner.
Marked by years he could not imagine.
But unmistakable.
May you like
“Evelyn,” he whispered.
The woman ran into the storm.
