Chapter 12 - The Gunshot in the Dark

Liam dropped to the floor.

Someone screamed.

A second gunshot struck the tunnel wall.

Emergency lights activated in dim red flashes.

Mercer lay near the elevator, clutching his shoulder.

Ethan had moved behind Sophia’s chair.

Nora Price stood near the electrical panel holding a pistol.

She was bleeding from the forehead.

“Let her go,” Nora said.

Ethan aimed at her.

“You should be dead.”

“You first.”

Sophia kicked backward, driving the chair into Ethan’s knees.

He stumbled.

Liam rushed toward her.

Mercer grabbed Liam’s ankle, but Vance and the officers entered through the opposite passage.

“Police. Drop the weapons.”

Nora lowered her gun.

Ethan fired toward the officers and ran through the red maintenance door.

Vance followed.

Liam reached Sophia.

She was conscious but weak.

“I’m here,” he said.

“I knew you’d understand.”

He untied her wrists.

“Can you stand?”

“I think so.”

Mercer attempted to crawl toward the elevator.

An officer handcuffed him.

Nora leaned against the wall.

“Ethan knows about Unit 21,” she said.

“How?”

“He heard Sophia tell James about the fallback location.”

Sophia shook her head.

“No. I lied to James.”

Liam looked at her.

“The ledger isn’t there?”

“Only another clue.”

Mercer laughed from the floor.

“You’re all chasing paper while Ethan is leaving the country.”

Vance returned alone.

“He escaped through the drainage passage. Teams are searching the perimeter.”

Sophia gripped Liam’s sleeve.

“He won’t leave.”

“Why?”

“Because he can’t.”

Her eyes moved toward Mercer.

“Tell them.”

Mercer remained silent.

Sophia forced herself to stand.

“Northstar’s accounts are protected by a biometric authorization system. James was one key. Mercer is another. Ethan is the third.”

Vance understood.

“With James dead, Ethan needs Mercer alive to move the money.”

“And he needs me,” Sophia said.

“Why you?”

“I changed the authorization sequence.”

Mercer stopped smiling.

Sophia looked at him.

“When I copied the master file, I added a fourth key.”

Liam stared at her.

“You can freeze Northstar.”

“I already did.”

Mercer struggled against the officer.

“You stupid woman. Do you understand whose money that is?”

“Yes.”

“Governments. Judges. Corporations. People who will tear your family apart.”

“That’s why I created the Mercy Ledger.”

Sophia’s knees weakened.

Liam caught her.

She looked toward Nora.

“Did you protect the others?”

“As many as I could.”

“Claire?”

“Safe for now.”

Sophia closed her eyes.

Her pulse was rapid.

Liam examined her pupils.

“What did Ethan give you?”

“I don’t know. Injections. Pills.”

“We need to get you upstairs.”

Vance ordered officers to secure Mercer and search for Ethan.

Nora was taken into protective custody.

As Liam guided Sophia toward the elevator, she whispered, “He’ll come back.”

“For the money?”

“For me.”

The elevator doors opened on the emergency floor.

Nurses rushed Sophia into a trauma room.

Liam began the examination.

Bruised ribs.

A dislocated finger.

A head injury.

Multiple injection marks.

Signs of prolonged restraint.

She remained conscious long enough to answer Vance’s questions.

Then her blood pressure fell suddenly.

The monitors sounded.

Liam ordered an emergency scan.

The results showed internal bleeding near her spleen.

She required surgery.

Before anesthesia, Sophia grabbed Liam’s hand.

“The document.”

“What document?”

“In my patient file.”

“Which file?”

“The one Ethan created.”

Her eyes struggled to remain open.

“Find the original marriage license.”

Then she lost consciousness.

Sophia survived surgery.

The next forty-eight hours passed in a blur.

Mercer remained hospitalized under guard.

Nora agreed to testify.

Dr. Vale began negotiating with prosecutors.

Police searched for Ethan across three states.

His face appeared on news broadcasts.

Airports and border crossings were alerted.

Yet there was no sign of him.

The forged patient file Sophia mentioned was found inside the hidden hospital floor.

It contained psychiatric reports, guardianship orders, and insurance records.

At the back was a certified copy of Sophia and Ethan’s marriage license.

Liam noticed an unusual seal.

The document had been filed in a county where neither Sophia nor Ethan had lived.

Rachel contacted the clerk’s office.

The license number belonged to a different couple.

Sophia and Ethan’s marriage certificate was fraudulent.

Liam reviewed the wedding documents.

The officiant had been hired by Ethan.

The legal filings had been handled by a Northstar attorney.

According to the state database, Sophia had never legally married Ethan.

“That should be good news,” Rachel said.

Liam looked at the certificate.

“Why would he fake the marriage?”

“To control her without creating a legal record?”

“No. Spouses receive financial and medical rights. A real marriage would have helped him.”

“Unless he was already married.”

They searched national records.

Ethan Cole did not appear in any active marriage database.

Then Claire found an archived court filing under another name.

Ethan James Ward.

The photograph was twelve years old, but the face was unmistakable.

Ethan had been married before.

His first wife’s name was Olivia Ward.

She had disappeared nine years earlier.

Her body had never been found.

The last person to see her alive was a young medical administrator.

Charles Mercer.
