THE DOCTOR’S SECRET / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - The Man Waiting Outside

Six hours before Dr. Robert Wright entered the delivery room, Daniel Hale sat alone beneath the harsh lights of St. Matthew’s Hospital, staring at a vending machine without seeing it.

Rain struck the windows at the end of the corridor. Every few minutes, thunder rolled over the city, making the glass tremble.

Daniel had been sitting in the same chair since Joanna was taken through the double doors.

He had tried to follow her.

A nurse had stopped him.

“Only one support person,” she explained.

Joanna’s mother, Linda, was already inside.

Daniel had nodded as if he understood. Then he had returned to the waiting room, where every second felt longer than the one before it.

His phone vibrated.

A message from Linda appeared.

She’s doing well. The baby should arrive soon.

Daniel read it three times.

He wanted to feel nothing but happiness. He wanted to forget the envelope hidden inside his jacket and the argument that had nearly destroyed his relationship with Joanna two weeks earlier.

Instead, he reached into his pocket and touched the edge of the old photograph inside.

The picture showed him as a newborn wrapped in a faded yellow blanket. A woman’s hand rested beside his face, but the woman herself had been cut out of the photograph.

On the back, someone had written:

Baby N. W. Born October 18.

Daniel’s birthday was October 18.

But his name was not N. W.

At least, he had never believed it was.

His adoptive parents, Paul and Rebecca Hale, had never hidden the fact that he was adopted. They had told him when he was seven, explaining that another family had been unable to care for him and that they had loved him from the moment they saw him.

Daniel had never questioned them.

Paul and Rebecca were his parents in every way that mattered. They had attended every school event, stayed awake through every fever, helped him through college, and welcomed Joanna as if she had always belonged in the family.

But after Paul’s recent heart surgery, Daniel had helped organize boxes in his parents’ attic.

That was where he found the envelope.

Inside were the photograph, a hospital bracelet, and a receipt from a private agency that had never legally existed.

The bracelet read:

Baby Boy Wright.

Daniel confronted his parents that evening.

Rebecca began crying before he finished asking the question.

Paul admitted that their lawyer had arranged the adoption privately. They had been told Daniel’s biological mother had died during childbirth and that the father had signed away his rights.

“Did you see the documents?” Daniel asked.

Paul lowered his eyes.

“We trusted the attorney.”

“Did you ever meet my biological father?”

“No.”

“Did you verify that my mother died?”

Rebecca covered her mouth.

“No.”

Daniel left their house feeling as if the ground had vanished beneath him.

He did not blame them for loving him.

He blamed them for never asking enough questions.

When he told Joanna, she tried to understand. But Daniel became obsessed with the mystery. He missed appointments. He stayed awake searching old records. He spoke to retired nurses and former hospital employees.

Then, three nights before Joanna’s due date, he found the name St. Matthew’s Hospital printed on the back of the photograph.

The same hospital where Joanna planned to deliver their child.

Daniel heard footsteps and looked up.

A nurse approached him.

“Mr. Hale?”

He stood so quickly that the chair scraped the floor.

“Is Joanna okay?”

“She’s safe. Your son has been born.”

For one perfect second, the mystery disappeared.

Daniel smiled.

“My son?”

The nurse smiled back.

“Your son.”

Then her expression changed.

“There is something unusual happening in the delivery room.”

Daniel’s smile faded.

“What do you mean?”

“The attending doctor asked to see you immediately.”

Daniel grabbed his jacket.

“Which doctor?”

The nurse glanced at the tablet in her hands.

“Dr. Robert Wright.”

The name struck Daniel harder than thunder.

May you like

Wright.

The name printed on the bracelet hanging beneath his shirt.
