Chapter 5 - The Hearing Her Parents Thought They Had Already Won

Arthur arrived at family court smiling.

That bothered Clara more than anger would have.

Victoria entered beside him wearing cream and pearls as if the hearing were a charity luncheon.

Chloe followed in red sunglasses.

Naomi leaned toward Clara.

“They expected you to miss this.”

“I know.”

“You ready?”

“No.”

“Good. People who say yes usually misunderstand court.”

Matthew was staying with Naomi’s sister under a temporary safety plan documented with the court.

When the hearing began, Victoria’s attorney described Clara as emotionally unstable.

They mentioned the yacht club incident.

The cancelled food.

The profanity.

The sudden hotel stay.

The association with Daniel Mercer.

Then Arthur testified.

He performed concern beautifully.

“My daughter has always been intense,” he said.

Clara watched him.

“But recently her behavior has become erratic.”

Naomi wrote something on a yellow pad.

Arthur continued.

“She humiliated a child in public.”

Clara’s head turned sharply.

Naomi touched her wrist.

Not yet.

Arthur said, “She encouraged Matthew to eat food she had stolen from his aunt.”

Chloe lowered her eyes dramatically.

Naomi stood.

“Your Honor, may I clarify the meaning of stolen?”

The judge nodded.

Naomi approached Arthur.

“Who paid the yacht club bill that night?”

Arthur’s smile tightened.

“The family.”

“Which family member?”

“I don’t recall.”

Naomi held up a statement.

“Would this refresh your memory?”

Arthur read it.

“Clara’s card was attached to the account.”

“So Clara paid.”

“Technically.”

Naomi turned toward the judge.

“Technically is a useful word.”

Arthur’s attorney objected.

Sustained.

Naomi continued.

“Did Matthew receive a meal?”

Arthur hesitated.

“He was given food.”

“What food?”

“A roll.”

“Stale?”

“I wouldn’t know.”

“Did you remove his plate?”

“I corrected an entitlement issue.”

Clara felt heat rise through her chest.

Naomi remained calm.

“An entitlement issue involving a six-year-old?”

“He was being raised without discipline.”

“Did you say he was not worth an eighty-dollar plate?”

Arthur’s eyes shifted.

“No.”

Naomi nodded.

Then she played the recording.

Clara had forgotten that the yacht club dining room used security cameras with audio around private event tables.

Naomi had subpoenaed an emergency preservation copy at dawn.

Arthur’s voice filled the courtroom.

Your kid isn’t worth an eighty-dollar fucking plate.

Then Chloe:

Even my dog earned dinner.

The judge looked over her glasses.

Arthur’s face darkened.

Naomi did not smile.

“Nothing further.”

Victoria’s petition collapsed quickly.

The judge found no basis for emergency removal.

She also ordered that Victoria and Arthur not remove Matthew from school without Clara’s written authorization.

Outside the courtroom, Chloe hissed, “You made Dad look like a monster.”

Clara stopped walking.

“No. I brought a speaker.”

Chloe’s face twisted.

Victoria approached.

“You think this is funny?”

“No.”

“You are destroying this family.”

Clara looked at her mother.

“For years you used that sentence whenever someone refused to let Dad destroy them first.”

Victoria’s eyes flashed.

“You have no idea what your grandmother did.”

That stopped Clara.

“What did she do?”

Arthur appeared behind Victoria.

“Enough.”

Victoria immediately fell silent.

Clara saw it.

Her mother was afraid of him too.

Not enough to protect Clara.

But afraid.

Arthur looked at Clara.

“You won this morning. Congratulations.”

“I didn’t realize keeping my child was a competition.”

“You’ve always been dramatic.”

“And you’ve always stolen from people who trusted you.”

Arthur’s expression did not change.

But Chloe’s did.

Confusion.

Real confusion.

“What is she talking about?”

Arthur turned toward Chloe.

“Nothing.”

Clara stepped closer.

“Ask him about Vance Legacy Holdings.”

Chloe looked at Arthur.

His jaw tightened.

Clara continued.

“Ask him why your signature authorized a transfer last month.”

Chloe’s face drained.

“My signature?”

Arthur grabbed Clara’s arm.

Naomi immediately stepped between them.

“Take your hand off my client.”

Arthur released her.

Chloe whispered, “Dad?”

He ignored her.

Then Clara noticed a man standing near the courthouse entrance.

Gray coat.

Black gloves despite the mild weather.

He had been at the yacht club.

Clara remembered him now.

He had sat three tables away from Arthur.

Watching.

The man met Clara’s eyes.

May you like

Then slowly raised one finger to his lips.

And walked away.
