Chapter 13 - The Grave Without a Body

The coordinates led to a family cemetery hidden above an old logging trail.

Even Pike did not know it existed.

Seven stone markers stood beneath the trees.

Six carried Cresswell names.

The seventh had no name.

Only a date.

March 18, 1958.

According to military records, Everett Hayes had been declared dead in 1953.

Nora brushed moss from the stone.

“Five years after he supposedly died overseas.”

Dale Mercer, who had joined them after Luke was placed under federal protection, studied the ground.

“This grave was opened recently.”

They found fresh soil behind the marker.

Federal agents secured the area and called a forensic team.

The grave contained no body.

Instead, they uncovered an Army footlocker.

Inside were deteriorating uniforms, photographs, maps and a reel-to-reel tape recorder sealed in waxed cloth.

One photograph showed a young Everett Hayes standing beside three men at the cabin.

One was Nora’s grandfather.

One was Jonathan Cresswell, Raymond Cresswell’s grandfather.

The third man was identified on the back as Colonel Samuel Vale.

The fourth man had no name.

Nora recognized him anyway.

He looked like Caleb.

Not exactly.

But enough to feel like a mirror across generations.

Evelyn examined the writing beneath the photograph.

“Taken in 1957.”

Pike opened another envelope.

Inside was a death certificate for Everett Hayes.

Cause of death: industrial accident.

Location: Cresswell Experimental Mine.

The certificate was unsigned.

Nora looked toward the empty grave.

“Someone planned to declare him dead a second time.”

The forensic technician connected the recovered tape to a portable reader.

Static filled the clearing.

Then a man’s voice emerged.

“My name is Everett Daniel Hayes. The date is March eighteenth, nineteen fifty-eight.”

Nora closed her eyes.

She was hearing her grandfather.

“If this recording is found, Jonathan Cresswell has failed to destroy the evidence. The mineral surveys were obtained through military theft. The land deeds were forged. Colonel Vale authorized the operation, but someone above him ordered the disappearances.”

The tape crackled.

“The names are recorded in my journal. The original documents will remain beneath the cabin until my son is old enough to understand.”

Nora opened her eyes.

Everett continued.

“I cannot return to Caleb. They have threatened the boy. I have agreed to vanish in exchange for his life.”

The recording distorted.

Then another voice appeared in the background.

A woman.

“Everett, we need to move.”

Everett spoke more quickly.

“If Caleb ever hears this, tell him I watched from a distance. Tell him I did not abandon him.”

The tape ended.

Nora wiped her eyes before anyone could comment.

Evelyn examined the other materials.

“The journal isn’t here.”

“Mason took it from the chest,” Nora said.

Pike looked toward the road.

A distant engine echoed through the trees.

The federal agent received a call.

His expression changed.

“What happened?” Nora asked.

“Sheriff Cresswell was arrested at his home twenty minutes ago.”

“That’s good.”

“He says Mason Reed has been working for someone else.”

“Who?”

“He won’t give a name.”

The agent looked at the empty grave.

“But he claims the person who ordered Caleb’s death is still alive.”
