THE DEED IN THE CREAM ENVELOPE / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12 - THE SAFE BENEATH DOCK D

The water near the old marina was cold and dark.

State divers arrived after sunrise. Owen used Robert’s hand-drawn maps to identify where Dock D had once stood.

Margaret watched from the shore while Daniel paced beside her.

“You should go home,” he said.

“This is my home.”

“You’ve been awake all night.”

“So have you.”

“I’m younger.”

“Not young enough to use that argument.”

Despite everything, Daniel smiled faintly.

The first diver surfaced after twenty minutes with nothing.

The second found a collapsed support post.

The third located a steel cable buried beneath silt.

The cable led to a waterproof safe secured between two concrete blocks.

It required four people to lift it onto the rescue platform.

The safe was transported to Lakehaven’s garage, where investigators photographed every surface before opening it.

Inside were sealed folders, property maps, a portable drive, and an original deed dated sixty-three years earlier.

Nora read the first page.

“This deed transfers Lakehaven to the Hale family trust.”

Margaret frowned.

“The house has always been held by the trust.”

“Not according to this language.”

Nora turned to the final page.

The trust named three beneficiaries.

Robert Hale.

Margaret Hale.

And the Lakehaven Preservation Foundation.

Daniel looked at her.

“I’ve never heard of that foundation.”

Neither had Margaret.

Nora continued reading.

“If Robert and Margaret died or transferred the property under coercion, Lakehaven would pass permanently to the foundation.”

“What foundation?” Owen asked.

Nora searched the state registry.

The organization existed.

Its current director was listed as Elias Ward.

Margaret knew the name.

Elias had been Robert’s private accountant before retiring unexpectedly fifteen years earlier.

“He disappeared,” she said.

Daniel looked at her.

“What do you mean?”

“He closed his office and moved without telling anyone. Robert said he had gone overseas.”

Nora checked the registry address.

“The foundation’s office is located in a town two hours north.”

An investigator opened the first folder.

It contained environmental reports from the flooded quarry.

The documents revealed that Northstar had stored industrial chemical containers beneath the ridge decades earlier, before environmental restrictions became strict.

Many containers were never removed.

If exposed, the contamination could affect the entire lake and several surrounding towns.

Daniel understood immediately.

“Northstar didn’t want to develop Lakehaven.”

“They wanted to control the evidence,” Nora said.

Owen looked toward the southern woods.

“Robert found the tunnel.”

“And threatened to expose them,” Margaret added.

The portable drive contained photographs, financial transfers, and recorded conversations involving Northstar executives.

One image showed Celeste and Adrian supervising the movement of containers through the quarry entrance.

Another showed a police vehicle near the tunnel.

The officer standing beside it was the same older man who had visited Lakehaven after the recent break-in.

Daniel pointed at the screen.

“He warned us not to trust Adrian.”

“Maybe he was warning us because he knew how dangerous Adrian was,” Margaret said.

“Or because he wanted us to avoid involving a lawyer who could expose him,” Nora replied.

The investigator sealed the evidence.

“With these files, we can reopen Robert Hale’s death investigation.”

Margaret held Robert’s ring.

For the first time in fourteen years, she felt that the truth might be within reach.

Then Nora opened the final folder.

It contained recent bank statements.

Not fourteen-year-old records.

Recent ones.

Monthly payments had been sent from the Lakehaven Preservation Foundation to an account belonging to Vanessa Crowe.

The transfers began two years earlier.

One month before Vanessa met Daniel.

The most recent payment had been sent the morning of the wedding.

Daniel stared at the total.

Vanessa had received more than $600,000.

“She was paid to meet me,” he said.

Margaret looked at the foundation director’s name.

Elias Ward.

Robert’s former accountant had funded Vanessa’s relationship with Daniel while apparently protecting the trust from Northstar.

Nothing made sense.

A phone inside the safe began to ring.

Everyone stepped back.

The device was old but fully charged.

Nora put it on speaker.

A man’s voice answered.

“Margaret?”

She recognized him.

“Elias?”

“You opened the safe.”

“Where are you?”

“That no longer matters.”

“You paid Vanessa.”

“I paid her to get close to Northstar.”

Daniel moved toward the phone.

“She was working for you?”

“At first.”

“What does that mean?”

“It means Vanessa found something more valuable than the assignment.”

Margaret gripped the edge of the table.

“What did she take from beneath the statue?”

Elias was silent.

Then he said, “The document that proves Robert did not die in the lake.”

The call ended.
