THE DEED GRANDMA LEFT BEHIND / Chapter 6 / 15

Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT EVERYTHING BROKE

The confrontation began just after sunset.

Rebecca had barely entered the living room when Claire locked the front door.

Harold stood behind her.

Margaret remained near the kitchen.

Rebecca looked from one face to another.

“What are you doing?”

Claire placed the transfer papers on the table.

“You're going to sign.”

“No.”

“You don't understand the consequences.”

“Then explain them.”

Harold moved toward her.

“Rebecca, listen to your sister.”

“No.”

Claire's voice shook.

“If you don't sign, everyone loses everything.”

Rebecca stared at her.

“Who is everyone?”

Claire said nothing.

Harold reached for the papers.

Rebecca pulled them away.

That was when Harold snapped.

He grabbed the baseball bat.

Margaret screamed.

“Harold!”

Rebecca backed away.

“Put it down.”

“You never should have come back.”

Rebecca's eyes hardened.

“This is my house.”

Claire grabbed her arm.

Rebecca pulled free.

The bat struck the floor.

The next moments became chaos.

Rebecca fell beside the rug.

Claire forced the papers toward her.

Harold raised the bat.

Then the front door exploded open.

“DROP THE BAT!”

The rest happened exactly as Rebecca would later remember it.

Cole arrested Harold.

Ellison recognized Rebecca.

Claire panicked.

And the secret Grandma had hidden began moving toward the surface.

But there was one detail nobody noticed.

When Harold dropped the bat, a small metal key fell from his pocket.

Margaret saw it.

She quietly picked it up.

Later, while Rebecca was in the hospital, Margaret placed the key inside an envelope.

She addressed it to Rebecca.

But before she could deliver it, Claire found her.

“You can't give her that.”

Margaret stared at her daughter.

“She deserves the truth.”

Claire whispered.

“You don't know what the truth will do.”

Margaret shook her head.

“I know what the lies have already done.”

Claire reached for the envelope.

Margaret held it behind her.

For the first time in years, she refused to obey her daughter.

“You're not taking this.”

Claire stared at her.

May you like

Then she whispered.

“You'll regret that.”
