THE DEAD WOMAN ON THE SCREEN / Chapter 3 / 10

Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN NAMED VANESSA GRAY

Detective Ortiz did not move.

Neither did Derek.

The underground archive seemed to shrink around them as the live video continued playing on his phone.

The chapel manager stared at his daughter on the screen.

Her name was Mia. She worked at a bookstore near the university and had been missing since early that morning.

“Let her go,” the manager said.

Derek ignored him.

He kept his eyes on Evelyn.

“The bracelet.”

“It belongs to my daughter.”

“It belongs to whoever possesses it.”

“That is how you see everything, isn’t it?”

Derek’s smile faded.

“Do not test me.”

Ortiz spoke calmly.

“If someone is holding Mia, you cannot guarantee her release.”

“I can end the video call, and the people with her will understand.”

“Your phone signal is being traced.”

“No, Detective. It isn’t.”

Ortiz glanced at the technician.

He gave a subtle shake of his head.

Derek had routed the connection through multiple encrypted relays.

Evelyn looked at the image of the frightened girl. Then she looked at Allison’s archive.

Her daughter had built this room to expose Derek, but Allison would never have accepted another innocent person being placed in danger.

Evelyn removed the bracelet from its evidence container.

The technician started to object.

Ortiz raised one hand, signaling him to wait.

Evelyn held the bracelet toward Derek.

“You release Mia first.”

“When I have the archive.”

“The room contains hundreds of files.”

“Then give me the master drive.”

Claire Rowan stepped forward.

“There is no master drive.”

Derek looked at her.

“I watched Allison carry it out of the lake house.”

“You watched her carry a decoy.”

Something flashed in his eyes.

Recognition.

Then anger.

Claire smiled without warmth.

“She knew you were watching.”

Derek raised the phone.

On the screen, the vehicle door beside Mia opened.

A person in dark clothing entered the edge of the frame.

The chapel manager gasped.

Evelyn held the bracelet higher.

“Stop.”

Derek waited.

Evelyn moved toward him.

Benjamin caught her arm.

“Do not.”

She looked at him.

“Mia is someone’s daughter.”

“So was Allison.”

The words struck both of them.

Benjamin released her immediately.

Evelyn continued forward and placed the bracelet into Derek’s hand.

The instant his skin touched it, the green light turned blue.

A voice came from the archive speakers.

“Secondary authentication confirmed.”

Derek stared at the bracelet.

Allison’s voice continued.

“Hello, Derek.”

The blue door closed behind him.

Locks engaged along the frame.

Derek spun around.

Ortiz took his phone while an officer restrained his arms.

The live video remained connected.

The vehicle door beside Mia opened wider.

Vanessa climbed inside.

Everyone in the archive stared at the screen.

Vanessa looked directly into the camera.

“It’s over,” she said. “The police found us.”

Mia was not restrained.

She moved behind Vanessa and climbed out of the vehicle.

Police lights flashed through the windows.

Ortiz looked at the chapel manager.

“Your daughter is safe.”

The man covered his face with both hands.

Derek struggled against the officer.

“You set me up.”

Ortiz held up his phone.

“You provided evidence of coercion, conspiracy and unlawful restraint. No one forced you to do that.”

“That woman planned it.”

He pointed at Claire.

Claire shook her head.

“Allison planned it.”

The blue light in the bracelet began blinking.

A section of the archive wall opened, revealing a screen.

Allison appeared again.

This time, she was seated in the blue room.

Her hair was tied back. There were shadows beneath her eyes, but her voice was steady.

“If you are seeing this, Derek has touched the bracelet voluntarily. That means he believed it could give him access to the archive.”

Derek stared at the screen.

Allison continued.

“The bracelet does not open the archive. It records biometric data and nearby audio. It was active at the lake house on October seventeenth.”

A new audio file began playing.

Derek’s voice filled the room.

“You said the brakes would fail before the ridge.”

Then Vanessa’s voice answered.

“They will. But you need to get her into the car.”

The recording paused.

Evelyn closed her eyes.

The next voice belonged to Allison.

“You both seem very certain.”

There was a crash of movement, followed by Derek shouting.

The audio ended.

The date appeared on the screen.

October seventeenth.

Three weeks before the reported crash.

Ortiz faced Derek.

“You planned to kill her earlier.”

Derek said nothing.

The officer placed him in handcuffs.

Allison’s recorded image looked toward the camera as though she could see Evelyn standing there.

“Vanessa was present that night, but Vanessa Gray does not exist.”

A photograph appeared beside Allison.

It showed Vanessa with darker hair, wearing a hospital uniform. Beneath it was a different name.

NATALIE VOSS.

Claire removed a folder from the shelf.

“Natalie Voss worked as a private caregiver for Rachel Sloane, the woman whose body was identified as Allison.”

Evelyn felt sick.

“What happened to Rachel?”

Claire’s expression softened.

“She was terminally ill. She entered a private care program funded by one of Derek’s shell companies. After she died naturally, her body disappeared before it could be transferred to her family.”

Derek looked toward the floor.

The recording continued.

“Natalie used Rachel’s identity to create a false death for me. Derek believed I would be inside the car, but I discovered the plan. I changed the passenger and escaped before the vehicle left the lake house.”

Evelyn could barely follow.

“Changed the passenger?”

Claire explained quietly.

“The car was transported remotely from private property. No living person was inside it.”

The body had been placed in the vehicle after Rachel’s death.

Derek’s plan had required the crash to destroy evidence and make the death appear accidental.

Allison had turned his plan against him.

“She knew she would be declared dead,” Benjamin said.

Claire nodded.

“It gave her time to trace the money.”

Evelyn looked at Vanessa on the phone screen.

Police officers were leading her away from the vehicle.

Vanessa stopped before entering a patrol car.

She turned toward the camera.

“Tell Evelyn I didn’t betray Allison.”

Derek laughed.

“You expect us to believe that?”

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“I wasn’t speaking to you.”

The live connection ended.

A second later, the black phone in Evelyn’s hand rang.

She answered.

Vanessa spoke in a hurried whisper.

“Derek believes I helped him replace Allison’s body. He is wrong. Allison asked me to do it.”

“Why?”

“Because she needed someone Derek trusted.”

Evelyn looked at the screen showing Vanessa being placed in the patrol car.

“Where is my daughter?”

“I don’t know. But I know where she was going.”

“Tell me.”

“You need to find the music box before Benjamin does.”

The call ended.

Evelyn slowly turned toward Benjamin.

He was no longer in the archive.
