Chapter 13 - The Hospital Beneath the Hospital

Whitmore Children’s Center looked bright, modern, and harmless.

Beneath it lay the remains of Gerald’s private clinic.

Original blueprints showed no lower level. Daniel’s notebook fragments showed otherwise. A hand-drawn map marked an elevator behind the old chapel wall.

Elena entered with Brooks, a tactical team, and Margaret.

Mia and Sloane remained at a secure federal facility.

“I should have demolished this place,” Margaret said.

“You built a hospital over it.”

“I thought good work could cover bad foundations.”

Elena glanced at her.

“It never does.”

The hidden elevator required a fingerprint.

Elena’s opened it.

Gerald had prepared for her.

Below, they found patient rooms preserved from the 1990s, storage cabinets filled with blood samples, and a computer archive containing medical files on hundreds of Whitmore employees and their children.

Gerald had collected leverage through health.

Pregnancies, addictions, genetic risks, psychiatric notes.

Evelyn and Natalie had been part of the system, though for different reasons. Evelyn sold information. Natalie secretly copied records to protect survivor families, then became trapped by her own crimes.

In the final room stood a crib.

Above it was a plaque engraved with Elena’s birth date.

Margaret covered her mouth.

On the wall, Gerald had placed photographs from every year of Elena’s life.

School plays.

Nursing graduation.

Her wedding to Daniel.

Mia’s birth.

“He watched us,” Elena whispered.

Brooks found a speaker.

Gerald’s voice emerged.

“I protected you.”

“You murdered people around me.”

“I removed threats.”

“You killed Daniel.”

“No.”

The answer came too quickly.

Elena moved closer to the speaker.

“Then who did?”

“Daniel chose sacrifice. Do not insult him by calling it murder.”

A screen turned on.

Daniel appeared in a recorded video, standing in the warehouse.

Gerald stood opposite him.

Daniel looked directly at the hidden camera.

“You cannot have Mia.”

Gerald replied, “She is my granddaughter.”

“She is my daughter.”

“You are temporary.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“So are you.”

The video jumped.

Vanessa entered. She argued with Gerald. The sound cut out. Then Evelyn appeared, followed by Natalie.

The final minutes were corrupted.

But the last clear frame showed Daniel alive after the support beam had supposedly fallen.

He was being carried from the warehouse by two men.

Elena gripped the table.

“Daniel survived.”

Gerald’s voice returned.

“For a time.”

“Where is he?”

“Finish the protocol and you will know.”

A compartment opened in the wall.

Inside lay Daniel’s notebook and a legal document.

The document required Elena to transfer guardianship authority over Mia to the Whitmore Family Office in exchange for access to sealed medical records concerning Daniel.

Brooks photographed it.

“It is extortion.”

Elena tore it in half.

The room alarms activated.

A countdown appeared on the screen.

Margaret struck the speaker with her cane.

“Gerald, stop hiding behind machines.”

His laugh sounded almost affectionate.

“You always did prefer drama.”

The exit elevator locked.

Water began rising through floor vents.

The old clinic had been built above a reservoir.

Brooks’s team forced open a maintenance passage while Elena grabbed Daniel’s notebook. Margaret slipped on the flooded floor. Elena pulled her up, refusing to leave her.

They escaped through a tunnel seconds before the lower level filled.

Outside, Elena opened the notebook.

Most pages concerned the guardian clause.

The last page was addressed to her.

Elena, I survived the collapse. Gerald’s people took me before the ambulance arrived. Natalie helped me escape once, but I went back because he had records that could destroy Mia’s future. If you are reading this, I may still be alive, or Gerald may want you to believe I am.

Do not trade Mia for me.

Beneath the message was a set of coordinates.

Brooks entered them into his phone.

May you like

They pointed to a cemetery.

Specifically, Daniel Callahan’s grave.
