THE DAY LILY FOUND HER VOICE / Chapter 14 / 15

Chapter 14 - THE BATHROOM DOOR

They returned to Vale House before dawn.

Claire required hospital treatment but refused to leave without Lily. Grant brought her to the mansion under police protection.

Lily stood at the top of the stairs when Claire entered.

For several seconds, neither moved.

Then Lily ran.

Claire dropped to her knees and opened her arms.

The child collided with her so hard they nearly fell.

“Mom.”

Claire held her, crying.

“My baby.”

Renata watched from the drawing-room doorway.

Her face revealed grief, jealousy, relief, and shame in equal measure.

Claire looked up.

The two women stared at each other across the hall.

“You came back,” Renata said.

“I never wanted to leave.”

“You left me with your lies.”

“I left you a letter.”

“You left me a child who hated me.”

“Lily did not hate you until you gave her reasons.”

Renata recoiled.

Lily held Claire more tightly.

Grant stepped between them.

“This conversation waits.”

“No,” Renata said. “It has waited for seven years.”

Claire rose slowly.

“You were supposed to protect her.”

“I tried.”

“You forced her into medical testing.”

“I was dying.”

“You frightened her into silence.”

Renata’s face hardened.

“She stopped speaking before I entered this family.”

Claire looked at Lily.

“No. She spoke after the accident.”

Grant nodded.

“For three weeks.”

Claire turned back to Renata.

“What did Lily say to you the first time you met?”

Renata did not answer.

“What did she call you?”

Renata whispered, “The woman from the boat.”

Grant stared.

“You met Lily before Claire died.”

Renata shook her head.

“She saw me at the clinic.”

“Lily said boat.”

“She was confused.”

Claire moved toward her.

“You were on the yacht.”

“No.”

“You came into my cabin.”

“No.”

“You demanded the trust transfer.”

“That was Sophia.”

“You were wearing Sophia’s coat.”

Renata’s breath shortened.

“I don’t remember.”

Claire’s anger faltered.

“What do you mean?”

Renata touched her temple.

“There are missing hours from that week. Helena adjusted my treatment. She said the medication might cause sleepwalking.”

Daniel, standing nearby, looked stricken.

“The same thing happened to me.”

Sophia had drugged both of them.

Used their bodies.

Manipulated their memories.

Placed them at crime scenes.

The woman on Claire’s recorder may have been Renata, Sophia, or a recording designed to implicate either one.

Detective Voss received a call.

Eva had been found walking along a rural road ten miles from the facility. She was unharmed but refused to speak to police.

She had asked for Emma.

Before Emma could leave, Lily pulled her toward the stairs.

The child was agitated, repeatedly pointing upward.

“What is it?” Emma asked.

Lily tapped her neck.

Then pointed toward her bathroom.

They entered together.

Warm light reflected from the marble surfaces. The room looked peaceful, almost ordinary.

Lily opened the cabinet beneath the sink and removed Claire’s recorder.

It had been placed there in the manipulated footage.

Emma pressed play.

A new file had appeared.

Claire’s voice spoke.

“Lily, when I come home, do not trust me until I tell you what you hid inside the blue bird.”

Emma looked at the wooden toy.

Lily held it tightly.

Claire was downstairs.

The recording suggested even her identity required verification.

Emma carried the bird to the vanity and examined it.

A seam ran beneath one painted wing.

She opened it.

Inside was a tiny memory card.

Before she could insert it into her phone, the bathroom door closed.

Renata stood beside it.

She held a heated styling tool.

Lily immediately retreated.

Emma saw the terror in her face.

Renata noticed the memory card.

“What is that?”

“Step away from the door.”

“I need to see it.”

“You need to leave.”

“Emma, Sophia has spent years planting evidence. That card may explain everything.”

“Then Grant and the police will examine it.”

Renata moved closer.

Lily hid behind Emma.

Renata’s frustration rose.

“Stop acting as though I am going to attack her.”

“She believes you will.”

“Because Claire taught her to fear me.”

“Put down the styling tool.”

Renata looked at her own hand, as though she had forgotten she was holding it.

“I came to fix Lily’s hair before the press arrived.”

“At five in the morning?”

“The reporters are already outside.”

Lily whimpered.

Renata reached toward her.

The child recoiled and struck the perfume tray.

A crystal bottle shattered.

Renata grabbed Lily’s wrist.

“Stop behaving like an animal.”

Emma shoved Renata’s arm away.

“Let go of her!”

Renata stumbled against the vanity.

Her expression transformed.

“She attacked me!”

Emma pulled Lily behind her.

The styling tool struck the floor.

“Stay away from her!”

Renata pointed at Emma furiously.

“She attacked me! Call security!”

Heavy footsteps came from the corridor.

Grant entered.

He saw Lily trembling.

“What happened here?”

Lily’s lips moved.

For the first time in two years, she spoke clearly enough that every syllable carried across the room.

“Renata hurt me.”

Renata’s face emptied.

Emma raised her phone.

She had begun recording when Renata entered.

The playback filled the bathroom.

Grant will believe me, Renata’s recorded voice said, and once Lily is gone, the inheritance becomes—

Renata lunged toward the phone.

Grant caught her wrist.

“Becomes what?”

Renata struggled.

“That recording is incomplete.”

“Then complete it.”

“I said once Lily is gone to the hospital, the inheritance becomes vulnerable. I was warning Emma.”

Emma replayed the earlier seconds.

The audio supported neither version completely.

A voice called from the corridor.

Eleanor appeared holding a sealed envelope marked with the symbol from beneath Lily’s bed.

Claire followed her.

When Lily saw them together, she screamed.

Not a word.

A full, terrified scream.

She pointed at Eleanor’s envelope.

Claire’s face changed.

“Where did you get that?”

“It was delivered to my room,” Eleanor said.

“By whom?”

“The courier used Emma’s name.”

Emma shook her head.

“I sent nothing.”

Grant took the envelope.

Inside was a legal document transferring temporary guardianship of Lily, Emma, and Eva to the Vale Medical Trust.

All three signatures at the bottom were already completed.

Grant Vale.

Daniel Vale.

Claire Vale.

The fourth signature belonged to a witness.

Renata Cross.

Renata stared at it.

“That isn’t my name.”

Claire whispered, “It was.”

The bathroom mirror cracked down the center.

Behind the glass, a hidden screen activated.

Sophia appeared live.

May you like

She sat beside Eva in an unknown room.

“Now that Lily has found her voice,” Sophia said, “perhaps she can tell you which mother tried to kill her.”
