THE DAY CLAIRE WALKED AWAY / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - Tomorrow Was Never The End

The old house was silent when Claire arrived.

Every room felt different now.

Not because the house had changed.

Because she had.

For eighteen years, she had believed her childhood was built on ordinary family problems.

A controlling mother.

A distant father.

A brother who avoided conflict.

A sister who was afraid.

A business that had collapsed.

A father who had died.

Now every one of those memories had cracks running through it.

Linda was waiting in the study.

She looked exhausted.

No jewelry.

No makeup.

No carefully controlled expression.

Just a mother who seemed suddenly much older than she had the day before.

Claire closed the door.

"Tell me."

Linda nodded.

"Your father didn't die."

Claire's chest tightened.

"I know."

"No."

Linda looked directly at her.

"You don't."

She opened a drawer.

Inside was a small recorder.

Linda pressed play.

Robert's voice filled the room.

"Claire, if you are hearing this, then your mother finally told you enough to make you dangerous."

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

Robert continued.

"I need you to understand something."

A pause.

"Everything I did was to protect you."

Claire whispered.

"From what?"

The recording continued.

"The person who controls the trust doesn't control the money."

Claire frowned.

"Then what does it control?"

Robert's voice became quieter.

"It controls the evidence."

Claire looked at Linda.

"What evidence?"

Linda shook her head.

Robert continued.

"Evidence of who created the false identity."

Claire's heart raced.

"And evidence of who ordered the transfer."

The recording crackled.

Then Robert said the sentence that changed everything.

"The person responsible is someone you trust."

Claire stared at Linda.

"Who?"

The recording stopped.

Claire pressed the button.

Nothing.

"Where's the rest?"

Linda shook her head.

"I don't have it."

"Who does?"

"I don't know."

Claire's phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

She answered.

Nobody spoke.

Then a man's voice whispered:

"Don't trust your mother."

The call ended.

Claire looked at Linda.

Linda's phone rang at the same moment.

She answered.

Her face went white.

She slowly lowered the phone.

"What happened?"

Linda looked at Claire.

"Someone just sent me a photograph."

"What photograph?"

Linda handed her the phone.

Claire looked.

The photograph showed Robert.

Alive.

Older.

Standing beside Daniel Mercer.

But that wasn't what made Claire's blood turn cold.

Behind them stood another person.

A woman.

Claire zoomed in.

Her breath stopped.

The woman was wearing the same pearl necklace Linda had worn at Mother's Day dinner.

But Linda was standing in the photograph.

The date beneath it was from six years after Robert's supposed death.

Claire looked up.

"Mom..."

Linda began to cry.

"I can explain."

Claire stepped backward.

"Then explain why you're in a photograph with my father six years after his death."

Linda didn't answer.

The phone vibrated again.

A new message appeared.

Tomorrow, Claire.

Come alone.

Bring the trust.

And if you want to know who your father really was, ask Linda what happened on October 14, 2008.

Claire stared at the message.

Then she looked at her mother.

Linda's face had gone completely pale.

"Who sent that?"

Claire didn't answer.

Because she already knew.

Not who had sent it.

But what it meant.

The story she had spent eighteen years believing was ending.

And another story was about to begin.

A story involving a living father.

A hidden trust.

A stolen identity.

A mother who had lied for decades.

And a secret so dangerous that someone had spent six years making sure Claire never discovered it.

Claire closed her fingers around the trust documents.

Then she asked the one question nobody had been willing to answer.

"Mom, who was the woman standing beside Dad?"

Linda looked at her daughter.

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then her lips parted.

And the name she whispered was one Claire had never heard before.

Claire's phone suddenly rang again.

This time, the caller ID displayed a name.

Robert Barrett.

Claire stared at the screen.

Her father was calling.

May you like

And she had no idea whether answering would finally bring him home...

or reveal that everything she had learned so far had been another carefully constructed lie.
