Chapter 13 - Eight Seconds of Darkness

The backup generators activated after eight seconds.
To Emily, the darkness felt endless.
When the lights returned, Dr. Bennett was still performing chest compressions.
“Charge again.”
The defibrillator delivered another shock.
Sophie’s body lifted from the bed.
The monitor remained silent.
Daniel struck the glass with both hands.
“Do something!”
Security held him back.
Dr. Bennett administered another medication.
Emily pressed her forehead against Sophie’s hand.
“You promised we would see Saturn together.”
A single pulse appeared on the monitor.
Then another.
The rhythm returned.
Weak.
Irregular.
But present.
Emily began sobbing.
Dr. Bennett did not stop working.
“Prepare the cardiac support system.”
Sophie was transferred to intensive care and placed on mechanical support.
The treatment had triggered a severe inflammatory response, but the medical team managed to stabilize her.
Dr. Bennett met the family two hours later.
“She is alive,” he said. “The next twenty-four hours will determine whether the treatment damaged or repaired her heart.”
Emily remained beside Sophie.
Daniel sat outside the room with his head in his hands.
Brooke lowered herself into the chair beside him.
“You almost lost her.”
“I lost her for six years before I knew her name.”
“That was not your choice.”
“I stopped searching for Emily.”
“You believed she had left.”
“I chose to believe it because anger hurt less than grief.”
Brooke looked at her ring in his hand.
“We both built lives around stories Victoria gave us.”
Daniel opened his palm.
The ring seemed to belong to someone else.
“I did love you.”
“I know.”
“I never would have married you if I knew.”
“I know that too.”
Their marriage was over, but the affection between them did not disappear instantly.
Brooke leaned her head against the wall.
“What happens now?”
“I do not know.”
“That may be the first honest thing anyone in your family has said.”
Victoria approached in her wheelchair.
Daniel stood.
“Why did the power fail?”
“The hospital is investigating.”
Brooke looked at her.
“You think it was Eleanor.”
“I think someone wanted the treatment interrupted.”
Daniel’s phone rang.
Adrian again.
He answered immediately.
“Where are you?”
“Near the lake property.”
“Marcus is there?”
“He left twenty minutes ago.”
“Did he find the ledger?”
“No.”
“How do you know?”
“Because I have it.”
Daniel stood.
“You said Richard moved it.”
“He did. I found it years ago.”
“Then why send us toward the boathouse?”
“To see who followed.”
Daniel’s anger sharpened.
“You used us as bait.”
“I confirmed Eleanor still controls Marcus.”
“My daughter nearly died while you played games.”
“The blackout was not connected to me.”
“Can you prove that?”
“No.”
Daniel looked through the glass at Sophie.
“What is in the ledger?”
“Names, payments, births, deaths, and the identities of all six original children.”
“Bring it to the hospital.”
“I cannot.”
“Then I will come to you.”
“Not yet.”
“Stop controlling the truth.”
Adrian’s voice softened.
“You sound like our father.”
“I barely remember him.”
“I remember more than you think.”
Daniel froze.
“You met him?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Three days before he died.”
Richard’s recording had said he was searching for Alexander.
“He found you.”
“He found one of my identities.”
“Why didn’t you go with him?”
“Because the woman raising me said he was trying to kidnap me.”
Daniel closed his eyes.
The same pattern.
A child isolated by a lie.
A family destroyed by someone deciding which truth was safe.
Adrian continued.
“The ledger proves Eleanor authorized the removal of Alexander Whitmore from the hospital.”
“Why?”
“Because Alexander was dying.”
“That makes no sense.”
“The infant registered as Alexander had the heart mutation. Eleanor replaced him with another baby long enough to alter the records.”
Victoria gripped the arm of her wheelchair.
“Another baby?”
“Yes.”
Daniel looked at his mother.
“Who was the replacement?”
Adrian hesitated.
“You.”
Silence filled the corridor.
Daniel felt the floor disappear beneath him.
“What are you saying?”
“The baby Victoria took home as Daniel Whitmore was not the child she gave birth to.”
Victoria shook her head violently.
“No.”
“The ledger contains the exchange records.”
“No.”
“Your biological son survived under another identity. Daniel was one of the Saint Catherine infants.”
Daniel’s voice failed.
Brooke looked at him with horror.
“If Daniel was one of the six, then Richard may not be his biological father.”
Adrian answered.
“Correct.”
Daniel stared at Sophie’s room.
Everything they believed about her genetic line had just changed.
“Who is my biological father?” he asked.
May you like
Adrian’s reply came slowly.
“The ledger lists Arthur Vale.”
