Chapter 8 - The Name Beneath the Blood Test

The church basement contained a hidden medical room.
Dr. Reed had built it with help from former employees of the Continuity Project. A portable ultrasound machine stood beside locked cabinets. Files filled metal shelves.
Anna lay on an examination bed while Dr. Reed drew blood.
“I never went through fertility treatment,” Anna said.
“You may not remember it.”
“I would remember something like that.”
“Not if they sedated you.”
Anna thought of the nights when she woke in unfamiliar rooms.
The missing hours.
The blood on her clothes.
The soreness Aaron dismissed as stress.
She turned her face away.
Dr. Reed stopped.
“I can wait.”
“No. Keep going.”
After the blood draw, Lena performed a private ultrasound.
The baby’s heartbeat filled the basement.
Anna began to cry.
For the first time, she heard it without Sylvia standing behind her.
Strong.
Fast.
Alive.
Then the sound faltered.
Lena adjusted the sensor.
“What is it?”
“Movement.”
“Is something wrong?”
“No. The baby changed position.”
Dr. Reed studied the screen.
“Gestational age is approximately fourteen weeks.”
Anna sat up.
“That can’t be right.”
“Why?”
“I took the pregnancy test three weeks ago. Aaron said I was seven weeks.”
“Your measurements indicate you were already eleven weeks pregnant.”
Anna counted backward.
Eleven weeks placed conception during a period when Aaron had been overseas for a month.
She looked at Dr. Reed.
“That’s impossible.”
“No,” the doctor said. “It’s evidence.”
They sent the blood to an independent laboratory under false names.
While waiting, Camille showed Anna the recovered files.
The Continuity Project identified women through medical records, universities, charities and trauma-support organizations. Subjects with limited families were preferred.
Anna’s mother had initially worked for the program as a legal archivist. She believed she was documenting an ethical fertility study.
Then she found evidence of stolen children.
Rebecca copied files, contacted Dr. Reed and planned to expose everything.
Two days later, she died.
“What is the seventh cup?” Anna asked.
Camille looked at Dr. Reed.
The doctor unlocked a cabinet and removed a silver cup with a black stone in its base.
“The program used six chemical formulas,” she explained. “Each served a different purpose: sedation, hormonal suppression, memory disruption, pregnancy maintenance, termination and behavioral compliance.”
“And the seventh?”
“An antidote.”
Anna stared at the cup.
“Rebecca created it?”
“She helped steal it. Sylvia kept one dose because she feared Malcolm would eventually poison her.”
Anna touched the roll of film hidden in her clothing.
“I found this inside it.”
Dr. Reed held the film toward the light.
“These are microphotographs.”
They developed the film in a small darkroom.
The images showed laboratory notebooks, patient lists and payment records.
One photograph contained a map of the Vale estate.
Beneath the mansion was a level Anna had never seen.
A handwritten note identified it as Nursery C.
Another image showed a page labeled Active Maternal Lines.
Rebecca Vale’s name appeared beside Camille’s.
Anna’s appeared beneath both.
Her classification read:
Second-generation convergence subject.
Only living candidate compatible with J-Series restoration.
Anna felt sick.
“What is J-Series?”
Camille whispered, “Julian.”
The laboratory results arrived the following afternoon.
Dr. Reed read them twice before speaking.
“Aaron is not the biological father.”
Anna gripped the edge of the table.
“Then who is?”
“The sample contains a partial paternal match in the Continuity database.”
“To whom?”
Dr. Reed turned the screen.
The name displayed beside the genetic code was not Malcolm Kessler.
May you like
It was Julian Vale.
Status: Deceased.
