Chapter 11 - The Person With the Master Key

The hospital entered full lockdown.

Every employee badge was suspended.

Security checkpoints were established at stairwells, elevators, and service entrances.

More than two thousand people remained inside the medical complex.

Mother Gray could have been a surgeon, a nurse, an administrator, a patient, or a visitor.

She could also have already escaped.

Elise Monroe provided one clue.

Mother Gray carried a master key created before the hospital converted to electronic access.

The key opened doors in the old building, including rooms omitted from current maps.

Rachel remembered the brass key marked 214.

“If that key was hidden inside Ruth’s recipe box, how did Victor use it to enter the room?”

Ward explained that the key they recovered might have been one of several copies.

Or the engraved key had another purpose.

Forensic technicians examined it again and discovered microscopic residue inside the grooves.

Not metal dust.

Bone powder.

Dr. Cole frowned when Ward told him.

“A key carved against bone?”

“Possibly used inside a bone mechanism.”

“That sounds theatrical.”

“So does maintaining a hidden blood archive beneath a hospital.”

Rachel remembered Daniel saying that records were more powerful than bodies.

Perhaps a body had been turned into a record.

A set of remains holding information no computer contained.

She returned mentally to the farmhouse and the dried well.

Too shallow. The rain will find him.

Daniel’s words might not have referred to Victor Hale.

They might have referred to another buried person.

Agents began searching the abandoned farmhouse near Blackwater Road.

The painted red bird was still visible on the mailbox.

Inside, they found evidence that someone had recently cleaned the floors with industrial chemicals.

The dried well had been covered with concrete.

Ground-penetrating radar detected a hollow space beneath it.

Before agents could break through, shots were fired from the tree line.

One agent was wounded.

The shooter escaped, leaving behind a rifle, a gray rose, and a hospital parking receipt from that morning.

Back at St. Matthew’s, Rachel’s security detail received orders to move her to a federal safe site.

She refused.

“Someone wants me transported.”

Ward agreed.

“We’re changing the route and using multiple vehicles.”

“That still puts me exactly where they want me. Outside the hospital.”

“We cannot protect you in a building with hidden passages.”

“This building also contains the records.”

Dr. Cole supported Ward’s decision.

“You need medical monitoring.”

“Then come with me.”

His expression changed.

Rachel realized she had spoken too quickly.

Too personally.

But she did not take it back.

Dr. Cole looked toward the hallway.

“I may be one of the children from Room 214. Leaving could make both of us easier targets.”

Ward considered the danger.

He finally ordered a protected transfer to a federal medical facility.

Rachel, Dr. Cole, and Ruth would leave separately.

Decoy ambulances would depart from three entrances.

Before Rachel was moved, Maya entered to change the bandage on her nose.

She worked quietly.

Rachel watched her hands.

“You’ve been kind to me,” Rachel said.

Maya smiled.

“You needed someone to be.”

“Did you work here when Elise Monroe disappeared?”

“For two years.”

“Did you know her?”

“Not well.”

Maya removed the old bandage.

A small key slipped from her sleeve and fell onto the bed.

It was dark with age.

Longer than the key marked 214.

Rachel stared at it.

Maya did not move.

Outside, two guards spoke near the doorway.

Rachel kept her voice low.

“What does that open?”

Maya’s eyes filled with tears.

“I hoped you wouldn’t see it.”

“Are you Mother Gray?”

“No.”

“Then who are you?”

Maya reached beneath her scrub collar and pulled out a chain.

A hospital infant bracelet hung from it.

The faded name read ADRIAN GRAY.

“This belonged to Dr. Cole,” she whispered.

Rachel’s pulse jumped.

“How did you get that?”

“My mother was one of the nurses in the photograph.”

“Which one?”

“The one whose face was scratched out.”

Rachel looked toward the door.

“Tell the marshals.”

“I can’t. One of them works for Gray.”

“Ward or Ortiz?”

Maya’s fear deepened.

“I don’t know.”

The overhead lights went out.

May you like

Backup lights failed to activate.

A hand reached through the darkness and covered Rachel’s mouth.
