Chapter 15 - The Name Beneath the Name)

Nobody spoke for several seconds.
Marcus stared at Victoria.
"What did you say?"
She lowered the gun.
"Charles raised you. He loved you. He was your father in every way that mattered."
Marcus took a step backward.
"Who was my biological father?"
Victoria closed her eyes.
"Samuel Marrow."
Elena gasped.
Rebecca covered her mouth.
Marcus looked between them.
Samuel Marrow.
Elena's father.
For one horrifying instant, Marcus thought of the implication.
Victoria understood.
"No."
She spoke quickly.
"Not the same Samuel Marrow."
Marcus stared.
"What?"
Victoria looked exhausted.
"The name was used by two brothers."
Rebecca frowned.
"That's impossible. I knew Samuel."
"You knew Dr. Samuel Elias Marrow."
Victoria pointed toward the photograph.
"The man in Charles's picture was his younger brother, Stephen Marcus Marrow."
Marcus felt his stomach turn.
"Marcus."
Victoria nodded.
"Your middle name came from him."
Marcus sat slowly.
Everything suddenly had another meaning.
The protection trust.
Wren's payments.
Charles's obsession with keeping Marcus away from Aurelia.
Lily carrying traits from both parents connected to the research network.
Elena looked stunned.
"Why didn't Charles tell him?"
"Because Stephen disappeared after trying to expose Vale."
Rebecca whispered, "And everyone assumed Samuel had died."
Victoria nodded.
"Vale deliberately merged the brothers' records. It became almost impossible to know which Marrow was involved in which part of the project."
Marcus looked at his mother.
"Did you know who my biological father was when you married Charles?"
"No."
He stared.
Victoria's eyes filled with shame.
"I met Stephen during a separation from Charles."
"You had an affair."
"Yes."
"Then you went back to Charles."
"Yes."
"And he raised me anyway."
"He learned the truth when you were three."
Marcus looked down.
"He stayed."
Victoria nodded.
"He loved you."
For the first time in years, Marcus felt grief for his father without anger attached.
Charles had not only protected Aurelia's victims.
He had protected Marcus from the truth of his own birth.
Elena touched Marcus's shoulder.
Lily came beside him.
"Daddy?"
Marcus looked at her.
She climbed into his lap.
"You're still my daddy."
He closed his eyes and held her.
Sometimes children understood identity better than adults.
A father was not a blood test.
A mother was not a surname.
A family was not a research file.
It was the person who stayed.
Marcus looked at Elena.
She was still there.
Alive.
That was enough for this moment.
Senator Wren sat in the corner, shaken by the revelation that Thomas might still be alive.
Rebecca began copying every Aurelia file from the hidden servers.
Nathan contacted federal investigators through Claire's old network, bypassing local offices connected to Wren.
By evening, Daniel Frost had been arrested.
Adrian Cole was transferred into federal custody under guard.
The hidden medical level beneath Thorne Children's Medical Center was sealed.
Marcus publicly announced an independent investigation without revealing Lily or Elena's history.
Victoria surrendered herself.
Marcus did not stop her.
Before federal agents took her away, she stood beside Lily.
Victoria looked uncertain for perhaps the first time in her life.
"I'm sorry."
Lily held her stuffed rabbit.
"For throwing Bunny?"
Victoria almost smiled.
"For much more than that."
Lily considered.
"You have to say sorry to Mommy too."
Victoria looked at Elena.
The two women stared at one another.
Years of betrayal existed between them.
Victoria lowered her head.
"I'm sorry."
Elena did not forgive her.
Not yet.
But she said:
"Tell the truth."
Victoria nodded.
"I will."
Three days later, Marcus took Elena and Lily home.
Not to the Thorne estate.
He never wanted Lily sleeping there again.
They moved into the quiet lake house Marcus had bought after Elena's death but rarely visited.
For the first time in four years, Lily fell asleep between both parents.
Marcus stood in the doorway watching Elena pull the blanket around their daughter.
He had imagined this moment so many times that reality felt unreal.
When Elena joined him in the hallway, neither spoke.
Marcus finally touched the scar near her temple.
"Does it hurt?"
"Sometimes."
He nodded.
"So do I."
Elena's eyes filled.
"I don't expect us to return to what we were."
"We can't."
She looked down.
Marcus continued.
"But maybe we find out what we are now."
Elena looked at him.
Then nodded.
It was not a perfect ending.
It was better.
It was honest.
Downstairs, Rebecca and Nathan continued reviewing the recovered Aurelia files.
Shortly after midnight, Nathan called Marcus.
"You should come down."
Marcus entered the study.
Rebecca stood beside the computer.
Her face was pale.
"What's wrong?"
"We finished decoding the final section of Charles's ledger."
Marcus sat.
"More names?"
Rebecca shook her head.
"Locations."
A map appeared.
Chicago.
Wisconsin.
New York.
Virginia.
Colorado.
California.
London.
Zurich.
Dozens of markers.
Marcus stared.
"Aurelia facilities?"
"Maybe."
Nathan zoomed out.
There were seventy-three locations.
Marcus felt exhausted just looking at them.
Then Rebecca clicked the final file.
A list of subjects appeared.
SUBJECT 01.
SUBJECT 02.
SUBJECT 03.
Names were redacted.
The list continued.
Marcus found Elena.
SUBJECT 07.
Status updated.
SURVIVED.
Then Subject 08.
Not Lily.
A man.
Name hidden.
Subject 09.
Subject 10.
More names.
Some marked deceased.
Some missing.
Some active.
At the very bottom was a separate classification.
GENERATION TWO.
Marcus found Lily's file.
LILY THORNE.
OBSERVATION DISCONTINUED.
His chest loosened slightly.
Then Rebecca scrolled.
Another entry appeared beneath Lily.
A boy.
AGE: 6.
Status:
ACTIVE.
Marcus frowned.
"Who's that?"
Rebecca opened the file.
Access denied.
Nathan tried the pendant.
The broken crystal unlocked it.
A photograph appeared.
Marcus stopped breathing.
The boy had dark hair.
Green eyes.
He looked almost exactly like Lily.
Same age.
Same expression.
Elena entered the room behind Marcus.
She saw the screen.
A sound escaped her throat.
"No."
Marcus turned.
"What?"
Elena stepped backward.
Her face had become completely white.
"Elena."
She shook her head.
"That isn't possible."
Marcus stood.
"Who is he?"
Elena stared at the photograph.
Tears filled her eyes.
"When I was taken after the crash..."
She struggled to breathe.
"They kept me sedated for weeks."
Marcus felt cold.
Elena covered her mouth.
"They told me I lost the baby."
Marcus stared.
"What baby?"
Silence.
Elena looked at him.
"I was pregnant when they took me."
Marcus could not speak.
Rebecca slowly scrolled beneath the photograph.
The boy's subject number appeared.
GENERATION TWO
SUBJECT 14
MALE
DATE OF BIRTH: MAY 17, 2022
PARENTAGE CONFIRMED
MOTHER: ELENA THORNE
FATHER: MARCUS THORNE
Marcus gripped the desk.
Lily had a brother.
A son Marcus never knew existed.
Six years old.
Alive.
Somewhere.
Nathan whispered, "There's a location reference."
Marcus turned.
"Where?"
Nathan clicked.
The coordinates loaded.
Not Chicago.
Not Wisconsin.
Europe.
A small village outside Geneva, Switzerland.
Then the screen flickered.
The location disappeared.
A new message replaced it.
HELLO, MARCUS.
Marcus froze.
Another sentence appeared.
IF YOU FOUND SUBJECT 14, THEN VICTORIA FAILED TO DESTROY THE LAST ARCHIVE.
Elena grabbed Marcus's arm.
A third line appeared.
YOU HAVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR THE WRONG MARROW.
Marcus stared at the screen.
Then a live video opened.
The six-year-old boy from the photograph sat alone at a wooden table.
Behind him stood a man whose face remained outside the camera frame.
The boy looked frightened.
He held something in his hand.
A crystal pendant.
But unlike Lily's pendant, its vertical line was not broken.
The unknown man placed one hand on the boy's shoulder.
The boy looked directly into the camera.
Then he spoke.
"Dad?"
Marcus stopped breathing.
Elena began crying.
The camera slowly pulled backward.
For one second, the man behind the boy stepped into view.
Rebecca screamed.
Nathan stood so quickly his chair overturned.
Marcus stared at the screen.
Because the man standing behind his son was someone whose funeral Marcus had attended twelve years earlier.
Charles Thorne.
His father.
Alive.
Charles looked directly into the camera.
Then said:
"Marcus, whatever Victoria told you about Aurelia..."
He paused.
May you like
"...she still doesn't know who started it."
The screen went black.
