Chapter 8 - The Woman Who Had Been Watching Elena Longer

The next morning Serena Brooks disappeared.

Her apartment was empty.

Her phone was abandoned inside a taxi near Penn Station.

Security footage showed her entering the station at 5:14 a.m.

No footage showed her leaving.

Arthur assumed Julian had hidden her.

Elena was not convinced.

Serena was arrogant.

Jealous.

Cruel.

But at the Bellamy, when Julian stopped her from removing the necklace, Serena had looked genuinely confused.

You said it was just jewelry.

Those words bothered Elena.

By noon, Margaret’s investigators uncovered Serena’s background.

Daughter of a physician.

Elite schools.

Marketing degree.

Joined Vance Industries six years earlier.

Rapid promotion.

Became Julian’s executive strategy director eighteen months ago.

Affair began approximately nine months later.

Nothing remarkable.

Until they reached Serena’s father.

Dr. Malcolm Brooks.

Former psychiatric consultant.

New Ashcroft Institute.

Elena stared at the screen.

“No.”

Arthur stood behind her.

Margaret continued.

“Brooks worked there for four years.”

“Did Serena know?”

“Unknown.”

“Is he alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Margaret hesitated.

“Marrow Center.”

The room seemed to shrink.

“Patient?” Elena asked.

“No.”

“Employee?”

“Medical director.”

Arthur reached for his coat.

This time Margaret did not stop him.

Marrow Center sat behind dense trees forty miles outside Baltimore.

The property looked more like a private boarding school than a hospital.

Brick buildings.

Tall fences.

Security cameras.

No sign identifying the facility from the road.

Arthur’s legal team requested entry.

Denied.

Margaret produced documentation related to suspected corporate fraud.

Still denied.

Then federal agents arrived.

William had made calls.

The gates opened.

Elena was told to remain in the sedan.

She refused.

Inside, Marrow was almost empty.

Too empty.

Bright corridors.

Locked rooms.

No visible patients.

Medical equipment recently removed.

Hard drives missing.

Paper records burned inside industrial disposal bins.

Someone had cleaned the facility in a hurry.

Dr. Malcolm Brooks was gone.

But in his office they found a photograph.

Serena at age twelve.

Standing beside Malcolm.

And beside them, Julian.

Age eighteen.

Elena’s mouth went dry.

“They knew each other.”

Arthur looked at the picture.

Julian had told Elena he first met Serena at Vance Industries.

Another lie.

A federal investigator opened Malcolm’s desk.

Inside was a file marked EV-31.

Elena’s initials.

Her age.

Thirty-one.

She opened it.

Photographs.

Medical notes.

Pregnancy milestones.

Travel.

Social schedules.

The last entry was dated the morning Maya was born.

SUBJECT DELIVERED FEMALE INFANT.

SUCCESSION PATH ACTIVE.

Elena stopped breathing.

Arthur took the file.

Another note.

MATERNAL TRANSFER RECOMMENDED WITHIN 72 HOURS.

CONTINGENCY IF RESISTANT: ACUTE INSTABILITY PROTOCOL.

Elena whispered, “They planned everything.”

A federal agent entered.

“We found a secure room downstairs.”

They followed him.

Basement level.

Biometric lock forced open.

Inside were shelves.

Hundreds of files.

Names.

Photographs.

Corporate families.

Politicians.

Judges.

Military officers.

Elena understood.

Vance was not the only family.

Marrow had spent decades positioning people around powerful bloodlines.

Husbands.

Assistants.

Advisers.

Therapists.

Drivers.

People close enough to influence decisions.

Arthur looked sick.

“How many?”

The agent answered.

“We don’t know.”

Elena found Julian’s file.

M-17.

Inside was a psychological profile.

Highly adaptive.

Strong mimicry.

Low emotional attachment.

Effective long-term placement.

Target assignment:

ELENA VANCE.

Then she found Serena’s.

S-22.

Secondary stabilizer.

Assignment:

JULIAN MERCER.

Elena frowned.

“What does secondary stabilizer mean?”

Arthur read over her shoulder.

Margaret answered.

“Someone assigned to manage the primary asset.”

Elena looked at Serena’s childhood photograph.

“Serena wasn’t Julian’s mistress by accident.”

“No.”

“She was assigned to him.”

“Possibly.”

Elena turned another page.

Then stopped.

A handwritten instruction appeared.

If M-17 develops independent attachment to target, deploy S-22.

Elena felt the room spin.

Independent attachment.

To target.

To Elena.

Julian may have been assigned to her.

But somewhere during eleven years of marriage, someone worried he had begun caring about her.

Serena had been sent to correct him.

Arthur read the next page.

His face hardened.

“Here.”

POST-BIRTH OBJECTIVE:

Obtain medical control.

Secure infant guardianship.

Remove E.V. from active succession.

Elena closed the file.

“What does remove mean?”

Nobody answered.

A sound came from the hallway.

Someone shouted.

Then gunfire.

Arthur pushed Elena behind a concrete wall.

Federal agents drew weapons.

Lights went out.

Emergency alarms began screaming.

Smoke poured through the corridor.

“They’re burning the building!” someone yelled.

Elena clutched Julian’s file against her chest.

Then she saw movement through the smoke.

A woman.

Dark green coat.

Barefoot.

Running toward them.

Serena.

Her face was bruised.

Blood ran from her forehead.

She saw Elena.

Collapsed against the wall.

“Elena.”

Arthur stepped forward.

“Where is Julian?”

Serena began crying.

Not dramatically.

Not like the smug woman on the lawn.

Like someone who had finally understood the size of the cage around her.

“He didn’t take me.”

Elena knelt.

“Who did?”

Serena grabbed Elena’s wrist.

“My father.”

“Where is he?”

Serena’s eyes filled with terror.

“He said Julian failed.”

“Failed what?”

May you like

Serena looked directly at her.

“To let them kill you.”
