Chapter 15 - The Man Who Watched the Funeral

They did not open Daniel's letter until sunrise.

By then state police had surrounded the ruins.

Federal agents were on their way.

Emma trusted none of them.

She, Rachel, Evan, Jack, Marcus, and Detective Ortiz gathered inside an abandoned ranger station ten miles away.

Rain tapped against the roof.

Emma held the envelope.

Nine months earlier, she had buried Daniel Carter.

Now every truth surrounding his death had dissolved.

Rachel sat across from her.

"Daniel loved you."

Emma looked up.

"Did he love you?"

Rachel considered the question.

"Once."

"And later?"

"We became something else."

"What?"

"Partners."

Emma laughed bitterly.

"Apparently everyone was his partner except his wife."

Rachel accepted the anger.

"He was trying to keep you outside Black Pine."

"He married me because his father told him to find me."

"He married you because he fell in love with you."

"Both can be true."

Rachel nodded.

"Yes."

Emma opened the envelope.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

Emma,

If Helen reaches you before I do, she will tell you I caused whatever brought you to her.

In one sense, she will be telling the truth.

Emma stopped.

Evan leaned closer.

She continued.

I created the false financial records tied to the cabin because I needed Black Pine to believe you had discovered something valuable.

Emma looked up.

Jack understood first.

"He made you bait."

Her hand shook.

Daniel continued.

I thought they would watch you.

I thought they would question you.

I never believed they would recruit Evan.

The boy closed his eyes.

I was wrong.

Emma's anger erupted.

"He knew we were being watched."

Rachel whispered, "Yes."

Emma kept reading.

The cabin contains more than files.

Beneath the second chamber is the original Black Pine master archive.

Names.

Payments.

Government contacts.

Judges.

Doctors.

Police.

Adoptive families.

Every child.

Every placement.

Every death.

Marcus whispered, "Jesus."

Emma read faster.

I couldn't retrieve it because access requires two biometric profiles.

Subject 14.

And Subject 1.

Emma looked around.

"Who is Subject One?"

Rachel shook her head.

Jack did not know.

The letter continued.

Helen believes Subject 1 died in 1999.

He didn't.

Thomas hid him.

Emma's pulse increased.

Thomas again.

I found Subject 1 last year.

And that's when I learned the worst truth.

Emma paused.

Everyone waited.

The next line had been smeared by water.

Only part remained readable.

Subject 1 is not merely another child.

He is...

The rest was gone.

Emma cursed.

She turned the page.

A final paragraph remained.

If the cabin burns, the archive survives.

The entrance is not beneath the fireplace.

That room was meant to be found.

The real entrance is beneath the cliff.

Emma stared.

The crash site.

Jack understood.

"The cliff where your SUV went over."

Daniel had directed them back to where everything began.

Emma continued.

And Emma, if Evan was involved in your crash, do not blame him until you know who was speaking to him.

There are voices in Black Pine that can make old wounds sound like memories.

Evan wiped his eyes.

The last lines appeared below.

I will come back when I know you can survive knowing what I became.

If I do not return, assume I am either dead...

or no longer the man you married.

Emma stared at the signature.

Daniel.

No declaration of love.

No apology large enough.

Just warning.

Marcus stood.

"We go back to the cliff."

Rachel shook her head.

"Too obvious."

"Daniel said that's where the archive is."

"He also used Emma as bait."

Emma folded the letter.

"Which means he expected someone to follow."

Jack looked at her.

"You have a plan."

"Yes."

Six hours later they returned to Black Pine Pass.

The burned cabin still smoked above the valley.

The crash site had been taped off.

Emma stood near the broken guardrail.

Her body hurt.

Her ribs hurt.

Her ankle throbbed.

But she felt stronger than the woman who had gone over the cliff.

Jack pointed toward the rock wall thirty feet below.

"There."

A narrow opening was hidden behind vines.

They climbed down.

Inside was a steel door.

No handle.

Two biometric panels.

One lit green when Emma approached.

SUBJECT 14 ACCEPTED.

The second remained dark.

SUBJECT 1 REQUIRED.

Emma touched the door.

"Daniel knew we would get this far."

A voice came from behind them.

"He knew you'd get farther."

Everyone turned.

A man stood at the cave entrance.

Tall.

Gray hair.

Dark coat.

Around seventy.

Lydia gasped.

Emma had seen his face in family photographs.

Jack whispered, "Thomas."

Thomas Carter.

Daniel's supposedly dead father.

Alive.

Evan stared at his grandfather.

Thomas raised both hands.

"I'm not armed."

Marcus aimed his weapon.

"You've been dead twelve years."

Thomas smiled faintly.

"So has Daniel."

Emma stepped forward.

"Are you Subject One?"

Thomas looked at the biometric panel.

"No."

"Then who is?"

Thomas's smile disappeared.

"The reason Helen rebuilt Black Pine."

"Who?"

"The first child she ever erased."

Emma waited.

Thomas looked toward the forest.

"We don't have much time."

"Answer me."

Thomas stared into Emma's eyes.

"Subject One is Daniel."

Nobody moved.

Emma felt the words enter the cave and change the temperature.

"My husband?"

Thomas nodded.

"Daniel Carter was never born Daniel Carter."

Evan whispered, "What?"

Thomas continued.

"The baby Lydia remembers died before she was old enough to know him."

Lydia stared at her father.

"What are you saying?"

"The boy we raised as Daniel was transferred to us from Black Pine."

Emma looked at the door.

Two biometric locks.

Subject Fourteen.

Subject One.

Her and Daniel.

Their entire marriage had been engineered decades before either of them understood it.

"No."

Thomas stepped closer.

"Helen didn't restart Black Pine because she wanted the records."

Emma's heart pounded.

"Then why?"

"Because the program was designed around two children."

"Daniel and me."

Thomas nodded.

"And when the two of you found each other as adults, people who had waited thirty years realized the final phase could begin."

Jack asked, "What final phase?"

Thomas looked terrified.

Before he could answer, a red light appeared on the biometric door.

A mechanical sound echoed from deep inside the mountain.

SUBJECT 1 RECOGNIZED.

Everyone froze.

Emma stared at the second scanner.

Nobody was touching it.

Yet it had turned green.

Marcus lifted his weapon.

"Someone's on the other side."

Locks began releasing one by one.

Clunk.

Clunk.

Clunk.

Emma stopped breathing.

Thomas backed away.

"That's impossible."

The steel door slowly opened.

Darkness waited beyond it.

Then footsteps.

Slow.

Familiar.

A man emerged from the tunnel.

Emma forgot how to breathe.

Nine months of grief collapsed into one second.

Daniel Carter stood before her.

Alive.

Older.

Thinner.

A scar ran across his jaw.

Evan whispered:

"Dad?"

Daniel looked first at his son.

Then at Rachel.

Then at Thomas.

Finally his eyes found Emma.

There was love in them.

But there was something else too.

Fear.

"Emma."

She could barely speak.

"You were alive."

Daniel took one step forward.

She stepped back.

He stopped.

"Don't."

Her voice shook.

"Don't come near me."

Daniel nodded.

"I understand."

"No, you don't."

"I know."

"You let me bury you."

"I know."

"You knew who I was before you met me."

"Yes."

"You knew Rachel was alive."

"Yes."

"You let Evan believe she was dead."

Daniel closed his eyes.

"Yes."

Emma's hand trembled with rage.

"And according to Helen, you caused the crash."

Daniel looked at her.

"I caused the circumstances that led to it."

Evan shouted, "That's the same thing!"

"No."

Daniel's voice sharpened.

"I never told anyone to hurt Emma."

Thomas suddenly looked toward the entrance.

"We need to move."

Daniel ignored him.

"Emma, the people who tried to kill you believe the archive behind me is the last copy."

"Is it?"

"No."

Everyone went still.

Marcus asked, "Where's the real archive?"

Daniel looked at him.

"Everywhere."

"What does that mean?"

"I released pieces months ago."

"To whom?"

"Journalists. Lawyers. Families."

Thomas's expression changed.

"You did what?"

Daniel looked at his father.

"I finished what you were too afraid to finish."

Thomas stepped toward him.

"You idiot."

Daniel's face hardened.

"No more hiding."

A distant engine echoed above the cliff.

Then another.

Marcus moved toward the cave mouth.

"Vehicles."

Daniel said, "How many?"

Jack looked outside.

"Too many."

Daniel turned toward Emma.

"Helen isn't coming."

Emma frowned.

"Then who is?"

Daniel hesitated.

For the first time since emerging from the tunnel, he looked frightened.

"The people Helen was protecting you from."

Thomas whispered, "Daniel."

Emma looked between them.

"Who?"

Daniel opened his mouth.

A gunshot cracked outside.

Jack dropped.

Emma screamed.

Blood spread across his shoulder.

Marcus dragged him inside.

More shots struck the rock.

Daniel grabbed Emma and pulled her behind the steel door.

She fought him.

"Let go!"

"Emma!"

"Who are they?"

Daniel stared at her.

"The original families."

"What does that mean?"

"The families whose children were taken."

Emma froze.

Daniel continued.

"Not all of them want justice."

Another bullet struck the steel.

"Some want their children back."

Emma looked at the files in her hand.

Her mother.

Her false family.

Jack.

Rachel.

Daniel.

Thirty-five years of stolen identities.

"What does that have to do with me?"

Daniel's face went pale.

"Because Helen lied about why you were taken."

Emma's heartbeat slowed.

"What?"

"Your mother didn't lose you because she tried to expose Black Pine."

Thomas shouted, "Daniel, don't."

Daniel ignored him.

"She gave you to them."

Emma stared.

"No."

"Helen volunteered you."

"No."

"At first."

Emma backed away.

"Stop."

"She believed her protocol needed a live subject."

"Stop."

"You were Subject Fourteen because you were supposed to complete the experiment."

Emma's eyes filled.

"What experiment?"

Daniel looked toward the opening door.

Footsteps were approaching from outside.

He lowered his voice.

"The one proving two children could be erased, separated, given entirely new lives..."

Emma already knew.

Her eyes moved toward him.

Daniel finished:

"...and still find each other."

Emma stared at her husband.

Subject One.

Subject Fourteen.

Their marriage.

Their lives.

Their children.

Their grief.

Maybe none of it had been coincidence.

A voice echoed from outside the cave.

"Elizabeth Vale!"

Emma turned.

A woman stood beyond the entrance surrounded by armed figures.

She appeared to be in her sixties.

She held an old photograph.

Emma as a child.

The woman shouted:

"My name is Rebecca Vale."

Emma's blood ran cold.

Vale.

The woman continued.

"And Helen Vale was never your mother."

Emma looked at Daniel.

Daniel's face confirmed he knew something.

"Who is she?"

He did not answer.

Rebecca raised the photograph.

"I am."

Emma could not move.

Behind Rebecca, another figure stepped from a black SUV.

Helen.

Alive.

She stood twenty feet from the woman claiming to be Emma's real mother.

The two women looked at each other with thirty-five years of hatred between them.

Then Helen looked at Emma.

Rebecca did the same.

Daniel whispered:

"This is what Black Pine was built to hide."

Emma turned toward him.

"What?"

Before he could answer, the steel door behind them opened farther.

A second tunnel became visible.

Inside were hundreds of shelves.

Thousands of files.

And directly in the center stood a glass case.

Inside it was a photograph dated 1990.

Three women held newborn infants.

Helen.

Rebecca.

And a third woman Emma did not recognize.

Beneath the photograph were three labels.

SUBJECT 0.

SUBJECT 1.

SUBJECT 14.

Emma stepped closer.

Her eyes fixed on the first label.

Subject 0.

A name appeared beneath it.

EVAN CARTER.

Emma stopped breathing.

Evan stared at the glass.

"That's impossible."

Daniel went completely pale.

Thomas whispered:

"They weren't supposed to find that file."

Outside, Helen shouted for Emma to run.

Rebecca shouted for her to stay.

Then Evan noticed something on the bottom of the photograph.

A date.

Seventeen years before he was born.

He looked at Emma.

Then at Daniel.

"Dad..."

Daniel said nothing.

Evan's voice cracked.

"Why is my name on a file from 1990?"

The lights inside the archive suddenly turned red.

A computerized voice filled the chamber.

"FINAL INTEGRATION SEQUENCE ACTIVATED."

Emma stared into the darkness beyond the shelves.

Somewhere deep inside the mountain, machinery began to awaken.

Daniel grabbed her hand.

This time she did not pull away.

Not because she trusted him.

Because everyone outside the cave had suddenly started running.

Emma looked at Daniel.

"What happens now?"

Daniel's eyes filled with a terror she had never seen before.

He whispered:

"Now we find out why Black Pine needed all three of us alive."

The steel door slammed shut.

And from somewhere behind them, in the darkness of the archive, a child's voice said:

May you like

"Subject Fourteen has returned."

CUT TO BLACK.
