Chapter 4 - The Price of a Second Chance

The following weeks transformed Vance Global.
The board recognized my controlling interest after independent experts confirmed the trust documents.
I became chairwoman of the company my mother had helped create.
My first action was to restore her name.
Vance Global became Hale-Vance Technologies.
My second action was to remove every executive involved in concealing the fraud.
Edmund cooperated fully with investigators. His confession reduced the charges he faced, but it did not erase his responsibility.
Helena refused to admit wrongdoing.
She claimed she had protected the company from an outsider and accused me of using Lily to steal Dominic’s inheritance.
Her argument collapsed under the weight of emails, recordings, forged documents, and financial records.
She was charged with fraud, obstruction, unlawful account access, and destruction of evidence.
Dominic resigned as chief executive officer.
The board did not force him.
He announced the decision publicly.
“My family’s name has benefited from a theft concealed for nearly three decades,” he said at the press conference. “I did not commit the original fraud, but I benefited from it. I also failed to protect my wife when she needed me most.”
He established a fund using his personal fortune to compensate former employees and investors affected by the company’s hidden transactions.
Then he disappeared from public events.
He did not send flowers.
He did not arrive at my apartment demanding forgiveness.
He asked Margaret to deliver a letter.
Claire,
I will not ask you to forget what happened.
I did not create the lies, but I made them possible by refusing to question what was convenient. I chose silence when our marriage required courage.
I want to know Lily, but I understand that being her father is not a right I can claim with one apology.
Tell me what I must do, and I will do it.
Dominic
I met him at a quiet café a week later.
He looked exhausted.
“The first thing you must do is take a paternity test,” I said.
He flinched.
“I know she is mine.”
“This is not for you. It is for the legal record and for Lily’s future.”
He agreed.
The result confirmed what we already knew.
Then I required supervised visits.
Dominic arrived early for every one.
At first, he seemed terrified of holding Lily. He supported her head so carefully that Naomi almost smiled.
When Lily cried, he did not hand her back immediately.
He walked around the room, speaking softly until she calmed.
Weeks became months.
He learned how to prepare her bottles, change her clothes, and recognize the difference between her tired cry and her hungry cry.
He attended parenting classes without telling the press.
He also began therapy.
One evening, after Lily fell asleep against his chest, he looked at me.
“I kept thinking that being successful meant never doubting myself,” he said. “Now I understand that certainty made me easy to control.”
I studied him carefully.
“You are becoming a good father.”
“Do you think I could ever become a good husband?”
“That is a different question.”
May you like
“I know.”
For once, he did not pressure me for an answer.
